Power cut. Lost most of last blog except for photos. Loas was great but in retrospect, we would not reccomend taking such a young child there as the hospitals are not good and you need to go to Thailand for attention. We travelled to Nong Kiowx which is north by bus 3 hours and then a boat for an hour. The village can only be reached by boat. It was a good experience for Jetson as he had much fun playing in the dirt with the local kids and sharing his 2 trucks. The village is very small with only one foot road that the people live either side of. We decided to take the bus back after 3 days and spent a few more days in Luang Prabang before flying to Chiang Mai. A great ... read more

After an overnight train ride we arrived in Chiang Mai feeling tired and dusty. Thankfully our room had a hot shower and was just up the road from a cheap Khao Soi place (a delicious Northern Speciality - a kind of curried rice noodle soup). We spent the day checking out the rather bohemian walled city which almost has as many temples as Bangkok! In the late afternoon we chartered a car up to Wat Doi Sutep - a stunning gld temple which overlooks the city of Chiang Mai - fantastic views!!! in the evening we visited the famous Night Market - lord knows why it's famous, there's little decent food and is very touristy (though I am sure great for some cheap tshirts or souvenirs). Our 2nd day in Chiang Mai was spent relaxing and ... read more

The travelling fools are at it again! We’re loving it so much here in Chiang Mai that we’ve decided to stay another four days, but with it being so hot (33-34deg) we determined that for at least the last couple of days we should find a place with a swimming pool. Off we went to check out a place in the old town, The Tamarind, that is well reviewed. The Old Town is full of traditional Thai architecture but has a higher concentration of ‘types’ than where we are. Barb’s not keen, and truth be told, neither am I. We walked past the Tamarind and it looked a little seedy from the outside but peering in it looked a bit more promising so as it was steaming hot, well it was midday, we went to have ... read more

Hello again all Just want to start this blog with a quick message of congratulations to two of our bestest friends in the world, Lucy and Mark Wilkinson, who had their first child on Saturday morning. Yound Joseph "Little Wilko" Wilkinson was a healthy 7 lb 14oz and we are so very happy for the three of them. We've just worked out we have been gone for over 7 weeks ..... cant believe its been so long already. Some things seem like a long time, for example it seems ages since we had to make our own bed or either of us said "oh no, it's monday morning". On the other hand it seems like yesterday that we were at Heathrow saying our goodbyes. We walked around a Thai supermarket yesterday and its normal things like ... read more

Hey you guys, Got back from Trekking in the Jungle yesterday, it was absolutely awesome. We booked it through our hostel and set off on the morning of 17th February and stayed the night in the Jungle on 17th and 18th, before coming back to the hostel at 5pm on the 19th. There were 10 of us on the trek, aswell as our guide and another guy that helped navigate us. Our group was a mixed bunch of various nationalities: Me, Will and Jonny (England), Matt and Sheridan (Australia), Astrid and Evelyn (Holland), Alexandra (Germany), Jonathan and Sandra (Sweden). We were all between the ages of 20-25 so we had a lot in common, everyone was really interested about how life was like in each of our countries. Our guide was called "Dang" and he comes ... read more

From Phitsanulok we went on a day trip to Sukothai. Last night we had dinner at the markets with Leoni from the NEtherlands. The wontons were awesome. Corb said that the spicy squid salad was very spicy but kel accidentally ate a brutally fiery chilli and couldn't taste anything for a while - oops! :( At Sukothai we enjoyed our wander through the ancient city. The temples were particularly impressive and on a rather grand scale. The place was huge - we were there for several hours and only saw the central area!! The giant buddhas amongst the trees and lotus ponds were very beautiful. However the real experience lay in the truck ride back to the bus station. 28 people in the back of the truck with no respect for any road rules whatsoever makes ... read more

We were up bright and early this morning ready to set off trekking. We left our main rucksacks in the hotel and boarded a converted pick-up truck. When I say converted i mean they have fashioned a metal roof over the back part and put two bench seats in it. With 12 of us sqashed in we though we were just being taken to a bigger bus, no, not to be, the full three hour journey was made in this little tin heap. We stopped at the police station and they checked everyone who was going, just to make sure we all return alive i guess. The journey was broken by a trip to the market to get the food we need for the next three days. Some of the hills we went up were so ... read more

At times I have been feeling my age, as the following may prove. Our stay at the sanctuary was very nice indeed, the house we were staying in was, if you all can picture it, like the decking at Underhill with an ‘L’ shaped pitched roof structure placed along the outer straight edges, leaving a smaller quadrant of decking exposed in the centre. It felt very open and airy if a little challenging when we had the heavy wind and rain. We coped. For the first few days there seemed to be a small clique there who had colonised the place, this may have been down to the fact that the owner had been away for four weeks. As her arrival back became more imminent the vibe around the place changed markedly (for the better). Where ... read more

Hello and welcome to my third blog of my trip, and possibly the most exciting one so far. This is because we have just embarked on a three day expedition across the jungles of Northern Thailand, about 40miles south of Burma. Here we have experienced so many different things and met so many amazing people! In our group there were 10people: us 3, an australian couple, 2 dutch girls, a german girl and a swedish couple (Sandra, the swedish girl was gorgeous!). We were all of a similar age of 21-25 and all very easy to talk to. Everyone seemed very interesting in everyone elses backgrounds and cultures- even the traditional fish and chips! The first day was the "dullest" of the three. After a hearty breakfast, we were were taxied up to the north of ... read more

Thai Funeral 3 day party We have been privileged to witness, unexpectedly, the way Thai people say goodbye to their loved ones. 3 days ago, we were on a stroll through the neighborhood when suddenly there appeared to be a great celebration beginning around us. There were 3 bearers of large, flowery banner-type things, which looked something like a Vegas headdress only were carried on long poles by hand. They were covered in photos, flowers, candles and decorations I can’t describe. There were people playing flutes and pipes, people with tom-tom type drums, cymbals, singing, dancing and just plain jumping up and down. This procession danced their way down the road and into a wat (temple) . Upon asking around, we were told that this was the 1st day of traditional 3 day funeral pageantry, wherein ... read more
