CHIANG MAI Chiang Mai is the second largest town in Thailand, but has a completely different feel than Bangkok. The climate seems to be much more temperate due to its northern location. You can actually wear jeans and not sweat your *#$%^ off. The town has a slower pace then the bustling capitol and makes a distinct effort to cater to the western crowd. You can see why the place is filled with Expats. Trek After one day of exploring the city I was off on a 3 day 2 night trek. Around 10 am myself and the crew of 6 other trekkers piled into a Songathew (think pickup truck with two benches and a metal cover), and drove north for a few hours. I was fortunate to be matched with a great group of people: ... read more

Husk ... read more

Well seen as you all seem to think using kelly's blog was just me being a lazy arse (which i guess is kinda true!!) im back to my own unique site. So i guess i better give you all a quick update. First stop was Hong Kong, amazing city with amazng sky-line views - unfortunatlety we didnt get to see any of them because of the continuous dense fog!! Still had an amazing time though, did th sight seeing bit and went and saw a giant buddha, learnt to haggle at the markets (despite getting a bit confused with the currency and arguing over 20p for a good 10mins) and ofcourse visited a few bars - saw a ccrazy local band, top music. From Hong Kong we flew to Bangkok - but only for a couple ... read more

We were in Chiang Mai for 5 days in total and did loads. Went to see a monkey show, felt sad though because the monkeys aren't kept in very nice conditions. Went to see a snake show, it was really good, they showed how they catch snakes and extract venom. Then we wnt on ATVs which are Quad Bikes, we went on a three hour ride up through the jungle and to a mountain summit, it was really good would recommend! Then we went to the night market it is massive sells loads of fake stuff, you could buy a fake anything! along with loys of scarves shoes and jewllery. Next day we started a three day trek through the jungle with 4 others, mark and maria, chris and dave, it started with an elephant ride, ... read more

Hamrende soede, smilende undervisere - piger saa ... read more

Part 9 January 27 Chiang Mai So much for school time, let alone sitting by the pool time. Between cooking school (7 tasty, full meal size dishes prepared and eaten (with cleanup done by the countless Thai helpers zipping about) in this slick operation with about 20 side by side burners and cooking areas for each person to be their own Food Channel star) or mountain biking (4000+ vertical feet from the summit of Doi Sutep on dirt trails remarkably like Vermont, with washed out tire tracks filled with leaves and pine needle sections to soften the shock) from 9-4, followed by the hour massage ($4), then dinner followed by our nightly rotee (a crepe like dessert with banana, egg, and chocolate cooked in a ton of butter), before you know it is time for bedtime ... read more

Part 8 January 21 Chiang Mai It always seems to take a couple days to adjust to a new country and begin to appreciate what it has to offer rather than what it lacks from where you just had been. The transition from India to anywhere is bound to be hard, as nowhere is likely to be as sensory laden as India. So Thailand seems almost too comfortable--clean, modern, catering to tourists. After a couple days though, we are beginning to lose our guilt about how easy it is and learning to enjoy the more relaxing lifestyle of Thai travel. This should have been harder, as our last days in India had their share of challenges. Our flight from Ahmedabad to Mumbai, meant to ease our transit, turned out less ideal when the flight was delayed ... read more

Elephants, Rafts, Canadians and Pig's Testicles. All of the above have one thing in common.... our hill trek in Northern Thailand. Our trek promised to be non-touristy and in the main held out well. It was actually more of a trek than we had imagined (Lara was thinking of a gentle stroll in the hills which of course would be flat - which part of hill and trek does she not understand - the girls supposed to be quite bright!!), but instead we were pouring with sweat within minutes, wading through rivers and climbing up near mountains (Lara's words). At first we started quite gently, lunch in a local village and getting to know our fellow treckers - 3 crazy canadian lads and a guy from NZ. The Karen tribe that we visited live in lowland ... read more

We are currently staying at the Top North Guest House in Chiang Mai. Our current room just $16 a day (David, Matt & Jedd would probably say that's expensive for here). But we got the worst room in the hotel. We had a look at other rooms which are much nicer (& the same price), but the hotel is now full & we can't change. It's full of mosquitoes, the tap & plug in the bathroom are broken, the shower is cold (although that's not uncommon - I don't enjoy washing my hair in water that takes my breath away) and there is a pipe on the third floor that drips & pours to the ground outside our room, keeping us awake all night! Last night we slept with ear plugs! Apart from that we are ... read more

I am writing this from the top bunk of a 2nd class cabin of a train on it's way to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. I should probably be asleep like the Korean Christian Missionaries in the bunks around me, but I slept until noon today, so I am just not tired. My Tylenol PM are in my luggage beneath the bottom bunk, and I'm afraid if I try to get them I will wake Jin-Hu and that would mean the risk of an attempt to convert, which is a risk I am not willing to take right now. It's funny how things happen when least expected. When I got back from Peru and went to work for MetiLinx, I really thought my dream of leaving everything behind and traveling for a extended period of time ... read more
