After Pai we went to Mae Hong Son which is a town not far from the Burmese (Myanmar) border. It was quite an adventure getting there, and not because you had to pass through several Thai army checkpoints on the way. The adventure was the transport itself, an ancient rickety bus. We thought that there were two types of bus going from Pai to Mai Hong Son, the normal daily bus and a more expensive mini van. We had planned to use the mini bus, which although more expensive would be quicker, more comfortable and could be booked in advance. Alas, we were told fairly brusquely at the bus station that there was only one bus and that it could not be booked. We could get no other information as to cost etc so we just ... read more

After our 5th week in Thailand, we left Pai to get away from the black hole of hippy enlightenment and headed out on the famous MaeHongSong loop. We found a simple little guesthouse on the little lake in the center of town. I immediately got off on the wrong note with the lady running the place when I asked if there was a discount if we were to stay for 3 nights. "Cheap for you!" she said with a frown. This is an interesting point about Thailand and SE Asia. Julija has had success with this approach more than a few times, saving us significant dough, however, sometimes, as in this case, the owner can be very offended at your haggling. MaeHongSon is a quaint little town with not much going on besides a few little ... read more

From Chiang Mai we took a mini van over the mountains (gorgeous scenery) to- what we had been led to believe was- a small village called Pai. In actual fact (and much to my disappointment) Pai turned out to be quite a large and modern town that more resembled a tourist resort (i.e VERY gentrified) and was decidedly un-Thai. The huge plus side was that we booked into these amazing little bamboo huts accross a river and a little bit outside of town. We had to cross, literally, the most rickety bridge ever made to get there and back and the huts had a lovely view of the mountains on one side and a rice paddy on another. It was really nice to wake up and feel like we were in the middle of nowhere, yet ... read more

Kate On the long and winding road..... to Mae Sariang The road out of Chiang Mai twists and turns up and down the mountains on the way out to Mae Hong Son, a town in the very north of Thailand near the Burmese border. The road was narrow and on either side the hedges were full of yellow sunflowers. We were on our way around the Mae Hong Son Loop, a road through the mountains of North Thailand that loops to Mae Hong Son and the back to Chiang Mai. We visited Pai, a hippy town on the loop last year from Chiang Mai. We loved the place and the scenery was beautiful so we wanted to explore more of the area. It's an 8 hour bus journey from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son, and ... read more

Saturday 13th October - Today finished sorting out the piles of stuff I am leaving for Gee, Jon or Beer to give out to the little ones while I am away. Then I had a bit of time on our newly installed internet before it was shower and Bupha, Plob, Pear and friend picked me up at 4.15 and drove me to yes, that place again - Udon Thani. Met Bupha's friend who had booked a bus ticket to Chiang Mai for me and then we had dinner at one of the many roadside cafes along the lake. Then it was off to the bus station for me and drive back to Thung Fon for the others. Had to wait for the bus about hour and a half. Boarded a very luxurious bus - seats had ... read more

After this we went into the very small village and teh guide showed us where they make whiskey from rice.
