A tough trek for 5 hours up a steep mountain. Great exercise though as you'll see from the sweat on the 2 of us! The beer at the top was one of the nicest I've ever had. Great views from the top, good pics at sunset and sunrise. No electricity up there in the village, bamboo huts were an experience too, 11 of us slept in the same room on the floor! Easier treks are available but it is well worth doing the harder ones! Also as part of the trip we visited an orchid farm, did an elephant trek, white water rafting and bamboo submarine.... read more

It's my last day in Thailand! I'm sorry that I did not post during the week. I did not have internet access and I was working on finishing all of my work for the semester. Empty Space was beautiful! It was outside of Chiangmai and we slept in traditional Thai houses. I was so busy that I did not have time to take pictures. Hopefully I can grab some from a classmate. Last night I came back to Chiangmai so I could finish some last minute things before I am off to Japan for Winter Break. I need to send my packages and buy a winter jacket and probably another pair of warmer shoes because Japan and India are going to be cold. Yay Winter! Boo Spending Money! I need to stay healthy because during the ... read more

Sawadee ka everyone, It is Thursday afternoon here in Thailand which means its a week since we arrived and definitely time to write my firstblog entry so that you can all keep up yo date with our adventure. As we lay here on the White sands of Koh Samet it is it is remarkable and exciting to consider how much life can change in the space of just 7 days. In some ways I cannot believe that a week has passed already but in others I feel that what we have already experienced spans accross a far greater space of time. The way that we have fallen into this just goes to show how quickly you can acclimatise from one way of life to one quite literally a world away. For those of you who I ... read more

Today was again a bit of a lazy day, starting with breakfast in bed - thanks to the hotel porter. I wasn't feeling too well and so our activities were somewhat limited. We decided to visit the famous temple on the hill 'Doi Suthep' but after a short taxi ride there were still 306 steps to climb! This temple has a really interesting story behind it - the king attached a relic of the temple to an elephants back and declared that wherever the elephant ended up the new temple would be built. The elephant climbed to the top of the mountain and ended its days under the jack fruit tree. This is where the temple now stands. Back in Chiang Mai we prepared for our departure - I treated ... read more

After a slightly better nights sleep, but still not 'comfortable', we awoke to omelette and toast being prepared around the camp fire for breakfast before packing up for our journey down the river. The raft had already been built but after a quick tester Sunshine decided we needed a modification so he and his helper strapped on an extra bamboo pole to our raft. Similar to punting we had to use thin bamboo poles to steer the raft with Sunshine at the front and David and Louis at the back. The journey took in a few rapids which required good navigation and strong punting skills. We all had a go and it's definitely harder than it looks! The scenery was like something out of the jungle book with the greenery scaling hundreds of feet above us, ... read more

Last night our memory foam mattress back home was sorely missed! The wooden hut we stayed in was not comfy, but to be honest I didn't expect it to be and we were so tired after the walk - anything goes! An 8am breakfast was followed by a 3.5 hour trek to a larger village for our second night. After lunch we headed off to the elephant camp - and put our riding/cling on skills to the test. The elephants looked very well kept and treated us kindly - a little bumpy when riding around their neck! We were informed they were solely used for tourism and they had stopped been used for logging. Lots of giggles were had when the male elephant got his willy out (ladies - it ... read more

Chiang Mai

We took the 12 hour sweaty overnight bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai – not good. Arrived there 6am and couldn’t check in till 2pm – nightmare! We went for a little walk around to find somewhere to get brekkie then found a lovely park to read our books then eventually 2pm came to check in. About bloody time too! lol Chiang Mai is a lovely little place – well the old part anyway – with a crumbling walled fortress around it. So pretty! We had a little cat nap then rented bikes to do some sightseeing – push bikes not motorbikes this time. We went to see two temples then decided we hated using push bikes and after an hour and a half we left them back – too much effort! Lol Next day we ... read more

Were back from our three day treck :) it was amazing!! Before I start though, I forgot to mention that on that day we got mopeds and rode up the mountain, we stopped off at a really nice waterfall and while we were there we noticed a little shop with bowls of insects on the table top. So decided it would be a good idea to try some!.. BLURGH! I tried one that looked like a thin widgety grupb which I thought looked quite cripsy and nice but when I bit into it the taste was revolting and it was all liquidy inside and I was nearly sick! Sean had a mini grasshopper which didnt seem so bad because he said it just tasted dry and dusty and our friend JOsh tried a HUGE cockroach but ... read more

After moving hotels the previous night we filled up on our complementary 'American' breakfast and joined the rest of our group to head out on our hill trek tribe. Our group consisted of David & Louis from Warrington, Gareon (sorry if the spelling is wrong) or 'Gary' from Germany, us and our tour guide 'Sunshine'. On the way out of Chiang Mai we stopped at tiger kingdom to play with the tigers. We braved going in with the biggest and the smallest ones! Back on the road to the local market to stock up - bananas, mangosteen and some chicken bum and pork nibbles (yup chicken bum!). The 'test walk' to the waterfall was pretty tough, I spent a lot of time on my bottom and two of the group ... read more
