(Gem Writes) It has been just under two weeks since we added our last entry. We have had some real adventures in that time, i just cannot believe how the time is flying! We spent a couple of days in Bangkok exploring. We met up with Sarah and Jon, a couple that we had met in Australia and had stayed in touch with. It was great to see them again and catch up with each others travel adventures. We spent a whole day at the Grand Palace and Wat Po, which is home of the largest reclining Buddha in Thailand. They are both very impressive, the Grand Palace is quite vast and took us a few hours to explore. It was hard going in the heat! It is amazing to see, just so colourful and different ... read more

Hello Hello!! So please let me tell you all how to go to a movie here in thailand or maybe it's just chiang mai i really don't know. Step one: Decide whether you want the normal tickets or emperor's seats or honeymoon seats. Step two: Go to the counter and pay, we choose just the normal seats cuz they were the cheapest! Step three: Pick where in the theatre you want to sit, yes that's right you have to pick your seats before you pay for them, so we were quite confused and just picked some seats in the middle i think it was E 9 and 10 haha, and you pick them off her computer screen. Step four: go to get popcorn and a drink if you want, and we did cuz we eat everything ... read more

Sooo much has gone on since the last entry! From the beautiful beaches of Rai Lei we took a boat over to another island on the west coast, Koh Phi Phi. Seems like the west side is a lot more scenic than the east. Koh Phi Phi got hit pretty hard by the tsunami and its not hard noticing both the damage to the building and trees... The island was obviously filled with many tourists as well as hard working locals. We were told that many people were killed on the island, but by the friendly nature of these people, we would never have known. We spent 3 nights on the island and throughout this time, we were able to once again relax much like the rest of our trip. Our first full day kevin decided ... read more

Hello Everyone Sorry it’s been quite a long time since our last entry but our hotel in Chaing Mai doesn’t have internet. Anyway since you last heard from us we caught the 13 hour night train out of Bangkok (thank god) up to Chaing Mai. The train journey was pretty good the food was nice and the beds were comfortable. At least Claire’s was I was on the top bunk which was small and cramped and rocked around all night, but I don’t need as much sleep as her so it was fine. Train journey was quite fun we met a Californian guy called Gabe, who was a laugh and just sat around talking into the night. I don’t think our fellow passengers were impressed as most of them went to bed at about 9. It ... read more

Greetings from Chiang Mai!! What a lovely place this is and such a contrast to Bangkok even though it's the second city in Thailand. We are staying in Winner's Inn which is pretty central but not ideal for backpacker budget. However it was part of our TAT package deal to Laos and so we are milking it! It is a palace compared to what we are used to-the first hot shower we've had since we got here and an actual shower as opposed to a combined toilet/hose system most places have going on!The first night we were here we were brought to a traditional thai restaurant as part of our package. It was a really lovely experience. We were greeted at the entrance by six young thai girls in traditional costume who performed a welcome dance ... read more

Helllo!!! Okay so i'm not sure where i left off, i think it was just that we had checked into our new place in chiang mai. Well we stayed there for 2 nights and then on the 2nd day we decided to go on a long neck tribe tour, which also took us to the butterfly and orchid farm, as well as some really cool caves and the long ear or big ear tribe. I'm just at a mall in chiang mai right now, it's pretty huge and by huge i mean like GINORMOUS! Seriously people this place is huge it's called the airport plaza or something, we are going to go see a movie later on at 4pm, i think Dick and Jane, it's kinda funny i think they are a little behind canada as ... read more

There’s little I can write about this ancient city because I simply don’t know much. I was eating dinner with my Swedish friend Emma at the Laughing Leprechaun, an Irish Restaurant in Chiang Mai and with the menu, the Thai waitress brought us a local magazine. I was immediately drawn to the picture on the front cover of the magazine that held an article about Wieng Kum Kam, the ancient city that has only recently been unearthed 5 km south of Chiang Mai. The low light prevented me from reading the full article but the pictures all seemed to be from one individual excavation sight. I hadn’t planned what to do the following day so we decided to take the mopeds we had rented the previous day and head south to find these ruins and see ... read more

Hello! So yesturday we had to waste a lot of time because we had to check out of our guest house at noon, and our train to Chiang Mai didn't leave till 9pm so... we walked the street of Khao San once again, and we decided to get an oil massage for half an hour it was pretty cheap like $5 canadian. It was so nice! We were quite confused as to how much clothes we had to take off so it was very funny and we could'nt stop laughing because the little thai ladies were telling us to take off more and more each time they checked to see if we were done changing haha!! So then we wandered off the main road to a side street and found a vendor selling the same shorts ... read more

After 12 long hours on a train w arrived in Chaing Mai. After lugging our backpacks round loads of dingy hostyels we have found another lovely one. This even has air con, TV and hot showers for just three pounds each a night... we love it and have booked 3 nights We are off on tour to highest peak in Thailand tomorrow and then to waterfalls and to meet a hilltribe. There are loads of tours like that here ... cant wait. and this one involves no proper walking. we can even bring flip flops hehe We went on a nice trip down river on last day in Bangkok. Saw lots of very poor houses on stilts... and a dead dog! But moving on... it's realy amazing to see. Peole selling things sail from house to ... read more
