not really been doing anything as exciting as the trek since we've been back in the real world but we rented a motorcycle and jetted around chiang mai on that feeling very pleased with ourselves! we could have stayed there for a long time, just doing nothing very much,,it was so relaxed after bangkok and china...our week consisted of big late breakfasts, temples and markets, late night chats with Mr. T and his crew in the Bob Marley shop, thai massages, big cocktails and lots of curry...we also managed to find a in use monastry which was completely deserted sitting on the top of a big hill that we happened to drive past looking for something else..i only managed to see because of a massive golden budda head sitting over the trees... the main event was ... read more

For those unawares, the title of today's entry is a quote from the movie, Dumb and Dumber, and while it is a good description of the characters in the film, it's a spectacularly apt label for myself and my cohort on this particular day. The previous evening I agreed to head to a nearby temple built on a mountain via a moped my roommate had rented. After visitng the wat we proceeded to go to the top of the mountain for the view, after enjoying the scene we were planning on heading home, but my cohort decided to turn onto a nearby dirt road to go a couple of miles to a nearby Hmong village. So, we bounced along the road (road being a generous description), up and down hills, and to my considerable suprise actually ... read more

24th March Wolfgang extreme decided he liked us so much he was going to come to Laos for some tubing action. I think we sold it really well so today we got him a visa sorted and booked him on the same speedboat as us. The rest of the day was spent in convalescence... ... read more

I arrived by overnight train to Chiang Mai in the morning. Chiang Mai is in Northwest Thailand, and the former capitol of some empire or another, and as such, is famous for numerous wats and a unique culture. After wandering around for a bit looking for a room, I met a German guy and ended up splitting a room with him while in Chiang Mai, he was a character to say the least and led to some interesting adventures. So, I spent my first day wandering the city, going to museums and wats. At one of the wats, as I ended up chatting with a monk for about 15 minutes, which was quite interesting. At a different wat another monk struck up a conversation with me and found out I was from Chicago (I always say ... read more

Written March 21, 2006 8:20pm in Chiang Mai After a few days of the heat, bustle and pollution that is Bangkok in March we were eager to escape to the north for a visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city and effectively the capital of the northern provinces. Our train ride, a jerky 14 hours of fitful sleep, left us in the Chiang Mai train station at about 10am. After gathering our thoughts and calling ahead to a well regarded guest house to secure a room we were courted by several cab drivers for sight seeing or passage into the city. We were wooed by Mr. Toy, a sweet gentleman whom we highly regarded for his ability to sustain negotiations with Amy (who again got her price). Mr. Toy drives a songthaew, a common mode ... read more

Written March 21, 2006, 10:07 pm We were picked up early on the morning Friday for our hill trek by a pick-up truck. We settled in to the bed of the truck and were soon joined by Lukas and Valeska, a pair of German students also joining the trek. Our final trekker, Amnon, an Israeli on sabbatical from his life in the software industry, made our group of five significantly smaller than the “6 to 12 people” we were told to expect and we were very happy about that. This was our first interaction with others and we seemed to luck out on the people based on our initial discussions. Thankfully before departing Chiang Mai we hopped into the back of a songthaew, a covered pick-up bed lined with benches. It is important to note that ... read more

20th March We awake on the sleeper in Chang Mai looking out the window of the train and notice that the scenery is very different. There are a lot of hills and wooden huts, this is a welcome brake from the bustling metropolis of Bangkok. We were picked up by our trekking guide Joshua and shipped over to out guesthouse in the back of an open pick up truck, stopping for coffee and some of the tastiest bananas we have ever eaten. The bananas are so good here! We decide to have a go at washing our own clothes in the sink in our bathroom. Disgusted when the water turns brown instantly. Not good! We go out for dinner and a bit of a recon at a small bar down the road. Pete is in heaven ... read more

Hi everyone! I had some downtime today and decided to start documenting some things from this trip, so I hope it works! Today is Sunday and I left for Bangkok on Monday - this week has been great. I had an initial scare at the airport, when the United computer wouldn't issue me a ticket because "length of stay not permitted" (visa is 30 days and my r/t is for 42 days - of course, i'm not going to be here for 30 consecutive days but the nosy computer doesn't know that). The ticketing agent gave me a little runaround, but then issued the ticket and telling me that if I was sent back at the border then she would be personally fined. I told her I'd do my best :) Anyway, I stayed in Bangkok ... read more

So Chiang Mai was quite a chillin' spot. Nothing too special... well, there were a LOT of wats, and a cool moat around the old part of town, and a really neat night market. We had fun... finally found some people to hang out with who were actually around our age... it was greaaat. Rachel and Melissa were from B.C., and Erin was from Calgary.. same same people from the boat. RAD. So after day one, we met up with Melissa and Rachel, and went on a fruitless quest to find a guitar. Ended up in the "day market", which was not half as cool as any of the other crazy markets we'd been to. Very smelly. Tried that dried sesame fish snack, though! Sare's foot was quite a drag... literally... so we went back to ... read more
