Hello again everyone Quick update on my Sri Lankan adventures. Sri Lanka is proving to be quite a photogenic place and I don’t want to flood folks with too many pictures on one post. So far my initial plans of heading up North and then skirting the East Coast are being followed and Sri Lanka is surpassing all my (already high) expectations. It’s a great country this, and the people are by far the highlight. There are two aspects of Sri Lankans behavior that have struck me most. Firstly, they are very polite, something that is quite English and not very Asian (in my limited experience). Secondly, and this may be down the fact I can actually understand them, they seem to have a great sense of humor. They banter and joke with each other a ... read more

Saavuttiin Trincoon lopulta joskus 7.30. Lisäksi toi on ihan peruskusetus. No mentiin siihen halvan kaverin kyytiin, joka alkoi tietty vänkäämään perillä tuplahintaa.

Perjantaina aamupäivällä lähdettiin Little Indiaan, jossa syötiin tietysti roti prateja curry-kastikkeella. Aasi... read more

Pollonoruwa After our great excursion to Sigiria and two nights at the middle-of-knowhere grasslands guesthouse, our driver outlined the last two days of our trip. First, we would be travelling to Pollonoruwa, an ancient capital city about 50km from our hotel. We would see the ruins and stuppas built hundreds of years ago before heading across the country (150km) to Anuradhapura, another ancient capital city, to check into our next hotel. After saying goodbye to our hosts in the savanna and our car bouncing along the dirt track back to the highway, we were on our way. Its a relatively new, smooth stretch of highway after that, with picturesque straightaways crowned by large trees along the way. The driver knows some back routes to Pollonnaruwa. At one point we're on a rough, one-lane dirt track moving ... read more

This beautiful island was formerly called Ceylon--the land of tea and cinnamon. Due to its shape and location, it has been referred to as "The Teardrop of India.” Many writers have sung the praises of this speck of land in the Indian Ocean. Anton Chekhov said of Ceylon, "It was paradise on earth-- an exotic fairytale setting.” Based on reports of his torrid love affair while visiting Ceylon, perhaps Chekhov meant erotic fairytale setting. But since the 1970s, Sri Lanka has been plagued with a civil war between the separatist Tamil Tigers and the Singhalese. We have been here on three previous visits only to see a country under siege where barbed wire, machine guns and sand bagged buildings were the most notable features of a war torn country. Fortunately the conflict finally ended two years ... read more

Finally we were off to do the part of the trip I had been eagerly looking forward to - visiting my cousins ... well sort of. Sri Lanka consists of two people groups, the majority being the singhalese, and the minority being tamils. Tamils are squashed up in the north and east of Sri Lanka, and thus so far, the majority of our interactions had been with singhalese. Being of tamil descent, I was looking forward to getting into Tamil territory so I could try out my very rusty Tamil language skills. Unfortunately Sri Lanka is just recovering from a 30 year civil war, during which large parts of the infrastructure of the Tamil parts had been completely descimated. The area we were heading to, Trincomalee, had been partly damaged and so the drive there was ... read more

who would win?? . . . this is one of THE top questions kids always asked in zoos. and when you try to explain to them that the two would never meet - their faces pout. and they just restate the question. or start arguing among and amuck. of course, I prefer this question over inquiries about parsel tongue or what would happen if pokemon met a grizzly bear. na, ja. but folks, here in the Eastern Province in Sri Lanka, I can say: the lion wins. ...as the singala lions have finally (we hope) outbeat the tamil tigers. and peace has been here for 1 year...but after 30x365 days of bloodshed...will the government finally do what it takes to give tamils what they need? and want? ...it's with a wee but o'irony that during this ... read more

The road to the north is really bad and buses are crazy weaving through traffic in these narrow roads, we saw an accident, looks like the car in the embankment tried to swerve from an oncoming bus but went too far, we came to a town called Vavuniya it looks very busy, this is now Tamil country, for those not in the know the Tiger rebels were defeated and peace was attained in this area only since last year. We got to the last checkpoint at Omanthi but there was a checkpoint that the Sri Lankan army was manning, they asked for passports, most of the soldiers here look like boy soldiers, they are so young looking, anyway one officer came back to tell us I needed a certificate or permission from my own embassy in ... read more
