Saturday 29, February, 2020 cont'd At 7.00 pm we went down to get some dinner. Pat ordered grilled chicken and I ordered chicken fried rice. As usual here it all took a little while. Pat's was a little spicy but ok. The hotel has a Chinese connection and last night in the restaurant of about 15 people, we were the only non-Chinese. Most of them seem to be into scuba diving. Back to the room for 8.30 pm and lights out 10.00 pm. Sunday 1 March, 2020. Another good nights sleep, woke at 6.30 am, stirred at 7.00 am. Down to breakfast at 8.00 am. Sliced fruits, omelette, bacon, sausages, French toast, toast, fruit juice, tea and coffee. You order breakfast from a menu. The waiter is a softly spoken young man, who gets most things ... read more

After a couple of days of lounging about the beaches and trying to spend as much time as possible twelve meters under the water surface, I decided it was time to continue my exploring. After the morning's diving, I set off back to Trincomalee, the nearby city that I had passed through on my way to Uppuveli. After a few minutes of sweltering on the hot and dusty main road, I was able to flag down a local bus heading south and I squeezed on amongst the brightly-saried women for the fifteen minute ride into town. Being in the north-east, Trincomalee has a different vibe to the other parts of Sri Lanka I had so far visited. Street signs are written in both Tamil and Sinhalese and there is far more Hindu culture evident in the ... read more

My plan had been to travel from Kandy to Jaffna but I was so tired after Sigiriya that I couldn’t face the eight-hour bus ride and so instead I settled for the comparatively easy five-hour ride to Trincomalee in the east for a spot of beach chilling and diving. Jaffna sounds very interesting so I hope to head there next. The bus ride was easy enough, leaving the chaotic Kandy bus station at 7am (luckily my tuk driver drove me through the station asking every bus where it was going and dropped me a foot from the one that I needed). I was joined by a middle-aged man who was on his usual morning commute to his job in Dambulla. He was very chatty and gave me lots of tips for Kandy, should I ever decide ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south-east from Jaffna to Tricomalee. We woke early at 5:30am, organised our packs and headed down to JetWing Jaffna’s amazing breakfast area. I had cornflakes, toast, jam, an egg hopper (thin crispy rice flour and coconut crepe cooked in a mini-wok, with an egg in the centre), wild orange juice, guava juice and tea. It was another fantastic breakfast, and I wished we could eat like this every morning. We checked out of JetWing Jaffna, jumped into our minibus and drove a short distance to Jaffna’s bus station, where we clambered into a very packed public bus and sped off towards Trincomalee. As we drove through Jaffna’s streets, I was unsettled by the war-torn houses that still bore the marks of ammunition. The further we travelled from Jaffna’s suburbs, the ... read more

Dutch Bay Trincomalee Dutch Bay beach is in town so we are not expecting much, but were thrilled when we saw a beautiful, clean, calm, aqua blue bay with golden silky sand, and when you are up to your chest in the water you can still see the shells on the bottom. It’s divine to swim in. We stay in this new large beach front room on 3rd floor with deck, but no chairs, weird, so we ask and they deliver chairs. We swim, eat and drink cold beer sitting on the deck taking in the view, and watching the dark clouds come in followed by the thunder and lightning in the distance. Very few tourists around and its high season here. We walk the small town waving to all the kids that find us amusing, ... read more

I have been in Sri lanka for a month now and am officially a resident here! I got my visa extended on Friday. We are starting to act a bit more like residents as well. I won't get in a tuk tuk (three wheeled taxi) now without considerable bargaining. Its quite funny how stressed we get about an extra 50 rupees which is actually only 25p. One day we got to play how many people can you fit in a tuk tuk and the answer is 6 (they're only made to take 3) so that was a bit of a squish! This weekend we headed up to Trincomalee which is in the north east of Sri Lanka. We hired a mini bus to take us. Google maps estimated it would take 4 hours to travel 268 ... read more

We arrived at Nilaveli Beach Resort after a long and bumpy drive from the ancient capital city of Anuradhapura. The resort is situated on the Indian Ocean with white sand beaches and crystal clear water. It over looked Pigeon Island, a small nature reserve. We took a boat to Pigeon Island for a couple hours of snorkeling. On the east side of the island is a bay filled with many different kinds of colourful tropical fish...no nemos (clown fish) but angel fish the size of your hand, eels and striped and spotted fish of every colour. On the west side of the island are coral reefs. It was like swimming in an aquarium and the water was even warm enough for me!! After returning back to the main land, we spent a couple of hours lounging ... read more

Phuket, Thailand is also a developing area working hard to attract tourists. Our bus drive for an hour takes us the length of Phuket Island, across a new bridge replacing a very ornate one, and on to a rustic pier to board a narrow, simplistic covered wooden motorized craft with movable benches. Our goal is to visit the monoliths just off shore, rising from the ocean in Phang Nga Bay, similar to the ones we saw in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. These limestone mini islands have an additional attraction of grottos dug out by the ocean that you can go into or pass through. Many kayakers ride aboard larger vessels out to these grottos and then paddle themselves through. We also see James Bond Island, so named because scenes from Man with the Golden Gun were ... read more

Geo: 8.56915, 81.2329I arrive in Trincomalee via Sigiriya which is the Sri Lanka equivalent to Ayers Rock in Australia, although after some disappointment I can't climb to the top of it, I didn't realise it was so expensive to get in (3700 Rs, around 18 GBP) and I didn't have enough cash on me. Their card machine is broken, there are no banks and they won't take travelers cheques so guess it wasn't meant to be, at least I suppose I can see it, I just can't climb to the top of it so instead I go into the museum and read the history of Sigiriya after taking some photos.I meet Wright from Taiwan on the bus and we end up exploring Sigiriya and the museum together before heading onto Trincomalee and the bus gets us ... read more

by Jan Picture a nice, very quiet beach. Nobody bothering you, selling you useless and overpriced souvenirs and clothes. Add friendly locals, a great crowd of chilled out backpackers and amazing food! This, in a nutshell, is Uppuveli, a place where we spent a week, even if our intention was to stay only a few nights. When leaving Polonnaruwa we weren't even sure where we were going. When looking for a tuk-tuk we decided that we want to go to the train station and head to the east coast of Sri Lanka. West and South coast are the two main tourist attractions, while East is slowly recovering from the civil war which ended a few years ago. The area around Uppuveli was part of the fighting between the national army and the Tamil Tigers, so just ... read more
