In seeing a friend's blog on her trip abroad, I too decided that I will blog about my trip to Korea. And so here I am to tell you(who am I kidding, "you" is really "me." But please, just humor me and dont tell me that I'm writing to no one.) I arrived last night at Incheon International Airport. I felt the humidity as soon as I stepped off the plane--not that it was a bad thing, it was just noticeable. The flight was nice. Plane was different from the ones I'm used to. Actually, I suppose most--if not all-- of it was different than I'm used to. I couldn't help but be reminded of the movie Wall-E, though, as I sat on the plane. **SPOILER ALERT(not that I'm really divulging anything about the plot)** Do ... read more

So today we were determined to see a Palace. We tried to go last weekend but they were all closed we were told. We went today. It was bitter cold and windy which made it worse. The only saving point to keep us all from freezing to death was that the sun was out and shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Gyeongbokgung is the oldest palace of the Joseon Dynasty(1392-1910). It was built in 1395 as the main palace. It is the most comprehensive and grandest of the five palaces of this period. In 1592 it was reduced to ashes from a Japanese Invasion. For the next 273 years, the grounds were left untouched and kings stayed in other palaces. It wasn't until 1867 that its restoration took place. In 1911, the land ... read more

My first stop in Korea was Changdeok Palace, which is a palace set within a large park in Jongno-gu, Seoul. It is one of the "Five Grand Palaces" built by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty and because of its location east of Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeokgung is also referred to as the East Palace. The literal meaning of Changdeokgung is "Palace of Prospering Virtue". Changdeokgung was the favored palace of many kings of the Joseon Dynasty and retained many Korean elements dating from the Three Kingdoms of Korea period that were not incorporated in the more formalistic Gyeongbokgung. One such element is the fact that the buildings of Changdeokgung blend with the topography of the site instead of imposing upon nature Changdeokgung was continuously expanded during the reign of King Taejong and King Sejong the Great, ... read more

It seems like fall has already come and gone. The weather is starting to get colder and Starbucks now has Christmas decorations and drinks. The holidays make me homesick. This will be my second Christmas away from home, only this year Sharon will be here. I’m so excited for her to come and visit. And I’m excited for the New Year and to head back home! Last week Kalpesh and his’ friends were in Korea. That was nice. It got me out to see more attractions around Seoul. The highlight was going to Namsangol Hanok Village and finding out that the Kimchi Festival was going on. I never realized there were so many different kinds of kimchi. There was even a blueberry kimchi! I would have tried it but the fact that samples were in a ... read more

Seoul is the 11th largest city in the world. Beaten in the states by NYC and LA. 12 million people. Yesterday I took a self-guided walking tour (they have them in my guidebook) and saw a fraction of the central part. As much ground as I covered, it's amazing how little I actually saw, but what I did see was very cool. Bosin-gak, a pavilion with a bell forged in 1468. This street was subtitled "Piano Key Boardwalk". Bet you can't guess why. As to the other "why", I don't know. Cheonggye stream - a canal built through the downtown area. The equivalent of $313 million, to "restore" the urban core and make it prettier. I say it worked, but part of me can... read more

This summer, we took my family of 11 to Nami Island with the Hannam Village Church. The guys went to the Paint ball range and the girls and Laban went to Nami Island. Although we experienced torrential rain, we had a wonderful time. We travelled by bus from Seoul and caught a ferry to Nami Island. The girls had a blast on the ferry. Cheyanne and Cherish wanted to ride the ferry all day long, but I had to tell them, this is just the beginning of our fun. ... read more

Museums Aplenty in Seoul My visits to the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMa, line 1 or 2 to City Hall subway station, exits 1, 11, 12) have been more interesting than I thought they would be. First I stumbled on it after visiting the Deoksugung Palace grounds and seeing the changing of the guard. You may find something great, or you may not like it too much, but it is only 700 Won (70 cents) so it is worth a try if you are in the vicinity of Deoksugung Palace and City Hall. Chun's Paintings For example, they had an excellent display of work by a woman artist named Kyung-Jay Chun (Chun Kyung-Jay). Why is she not better known? Why is there no book of her work in English (as far as I can tell)? She ... read more

ANYOHASEYO! Hola, Korean style. Our stay in Seoul was filled with heat, protests, nightlife, culture, and--of course--food. Let's begin. When we got into Korea, the first thing we noticed was how green and lush it was. Pretty dang tropical actually (which came with its fair share of hideous, ginormous bugs). But it was nice and clean, which was a nice change from our smoggy Shanghai lodgings. Our airport bus had a Korean game show playing--just a taste of the fobby, ridonkulous things we were to expect for the rest of the trip. We stayed at the New Kukje Hotel in Seoul, right down the street from City Hall. It wasn't the Janky McJankersonville that I expected, since the hotel actually had windows (the New Western had rooms that didn't). Since we got there early, the ... read more

You can't visit Seoul without trotting off to Insadong to experience a teahouse. Met up with El and Candace, my companions at the War Museum and we hunted through Insadong's back alleys until we found Yetchatjip, the old tea house. This place has the atmosphere of a slightly organised junk shop, with stuff everywhere, little tables to sit at or in our case a little private area with cushions on the floor for us to sit on. There are even a host of small birds flying around freely. Luckily they didn't come into our area as I'd be a little worried about extra bits in the tea. We tried Jujube (heavy, date flavour); Double Heaven (also a bit heavy) and Chrysanthemum (so light it almost didn't exist) so in the end the tea didn't rock, but ... read more
