I was born June 24, 1947, St. Jean Baptiste Day, in Marssum, Friesland, the Netherlands. I moved to America in 1952 because my parents went to Cleveland, Ohio, and it was tough to get a job at age five. My CV was not as long then as it is now. I am currently in Seoul, Korea, but I work in Guelph, Ontario. Since my name is so common in the Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa and Norway, I (unofficially) added the "van Guelph" to make it clear that I am from the city of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. I discovered this site when looking up what is said about the Boryeon Mud Festival experience. I just did a bit of editing on the Wikipedia site. The Mud Festival is fun, sure, but Boryeon also has other attractions, particularly the Silla ear Songjeong Buddhist Temple site, which I found meditative. It was on the FREE bus tour for visitors, Korean and non-Korean alike. (Our guide did not speak any English.) So I would like to blog further adventures, ... why not!

Drawing Inspired by Art at Seoul Museum of Art During my first visit to the Seoul Museum of Art I was so inspired by the drawings I saw that I decided to buy some drawing pencils and I made this little sketch. My mom (in Dutch "Mam") used to take me to the Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, when I was a boy. But I have not drawn anything since I was about sixteen. Now in my dottering (spelling?) old age I have suddenly rediscovered the desire to draw and perhaps paint again. The art work here in Korea really is quite good and in Cheonan I visited a major gallery. There is a great deal of experimental art coming out of the People's Republic of China and some of it is very provocative and ... read more

Museums Aplenty in Seoul My visits to the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMa, line 1 or 2 to City Hall subway station, exits 1, 11, 12) have been more interesting than I thought they would be. First I stumbled on it after visiting the Deoksugung Palace grounds and seeing the changing of the guard. You may find something great, or you may not like it too much, but it is only 700 Won (70 cents) so it is worth a try if you are in the vicinity of Deoksugung Palace and City Hall. Chun's Paintings For example, they had an excellent display of work by a woman artist named Kyung-Jay Chun (Chun Kyung-Jay). Why is she not better known? Why is there no book of her work in English (as far as I can tell)? She ... read more

A travel book I read on the plane told about a Canadian soldier who had experienced Korea during the Korean War as nothing but lots of mud. What he did not have in mind, of course, is the Boryeong Mud Festival. The Boryeong Mud Festival has become justly famous for its somewhat wilder side, especially with the American GI's there on the last weekend. This year there is also an all night RAVE. There are lots of good pictures on the web of Americans looking silly, but they mostly seem to be having lots of fun haming it up for the Korea photographers. They are great pictures. But I feel that the pictures which are shown on the web are somewhat unrepresentative. For example, there are a lot of Koreans doing the mud thing during the ... read more
