It's been more than 6 months since I've written my last blog and I want to apologize for being so terrible in keeping everyone up-to-date. Although I have been keeping notes and personal journals in order to write complete entries in the future I decided to write one at the moment as well. As most people may already know, my schooling experience at Yonsei University, South Korea has ended. It was a great experience and like most great experiences, are not realized to be great until they are already passed. It isn't necessarily the education which made this experience so special, but the people and the feeling of growth through times both good and bad. I guess travel really does educate a person, and although a year may not feel to be so long, a lot ... read more

Well, it's been a while! I have so much to write; so let's dig in. First, I just want to let you all know how much I miss you! I have been having the experience of a life time here in Seoul. I wish I could stay forever! Thank you to all those who made it happen. Down to business. I have made so many new and cool friends here! Last weekend a group of us went out to Hongdae. Right off the campus of Hongik University, Hongdae is a hub for young people out on the town in Seoul. Full of the most GORGEOUS men known to man, I found that it was the perfect place for me. After getting all dolled up and fancy, we all decided on a traditional Korean dinner. BBQ. YUM! ... read more

Heeellllllloooooo, World! Yesterday was an AWESOME day! I went into the studio for a few hours to get acquainted with my surroundings, and it was a blastie-blast! I met everyone, and it was so nice to feel welcomed. After that, I walked around the city some more. Believe it or not, Seoul is about the size of New York and feels just as big! I decided against tackling the subway system at night and instead favored some food here. I had a dish made up of what I hope was beef and rice with some sauce and spices on it. Let me just be real here; I have no clue what it was called and I just pointed to the picture that looked the safest. It tasted good though. When I got back, I was greeted ... read more

Two of my friends recently moved to Korea from Germany and Australia, which meant it was the perfect time to play tourist. I had taught in Korea for the past 9 months, had visited Korea frequently growing up, yet I had not visited most of the popular tourist sites during all that available time. Gyeongbokgung (Gyeongbok Palace) is often listed as the #1 place to visit in Seoul if you have little time to spare. We decided to check for ourselves. I met up with my recently acquainted friend, Ozy Brett, at Subway Line 3, Gyeongbokgung, Exit #5. Actually, that's a lie. I got off on the wrong subway exit and had to taxi my way over to the correct area. Taxi-speak: Ahnnyeong ha sae yo. Hello. Gyeongbokgung ooh roh daeryuh ju sae yo. -> Please ... read more

Well kids, it was another eventful day here; left to my own devices again today, I wandered...and got lost. I mean, REALLY REALLY lost. Dunkin' Donuts, you let me down! Walking though turned out to be the best thing for me. I met some really cool people. First, I woke up, took a shower, and sat around for about an hour before deciding to go and get some grub. So I packed up my things, and off I went in search of a filling, yet safe looking meal. Cut to me, walking an hour and a half later, dripping in sweat, up a hill in a heavily wooded area with lots of roses completely lost. So naturally, I sat down and tried to decipher on my handy dandy tourist map (all in Korean by the way)where ... read more

WHEW! Man oh man...I hiked about a million miles today! Seoul is pretty intense. I can't read anything, speak to anyone and I have no clue where I'm going, but it was nice just to wander. I have found that my navigational skills are best put to use when I have a huge Dunkin' Donuts as a starting point. I know if I can see that three stories of goodness and fried dough, I know I'm home. (Much like in the states...hmmm definitely something to think about.) I also tried some of the local food here, and I am happy to report that I am in fact, NOT shitting my pants right now. Kudos to me, and my hearty colon. I had a total of one compliment on my hair today and a lot of open-mouthed ... read more

These are photos from the all-day Lantern Festival that took up blocks in an already busy area of Seoul. There were crowds of people from various countries and the second I saw the diversity, I was in love. There's nothing that makes me happier than being surrounded by cultural hodgepodge. Beautiful women dressed in traditional clothes urged us to experience a 1-hr temple stay (my friend and I refused because we had both done more authentic temple-stays and wanted to see what else was going on). Lanterns decorated the Jogyesa Temple and the streets. As daylight faded, the lanterns glowed, illuminating all corners of the streets. Though we missed it, I recommend seeing the floating lanterns they place in Cheong Geh Cheon River. One of my fellow Incheon teachers posted photos of the floating lanterns and ... read more

Sunday was the epically awesome Korean Lunar New Year, also known as Seollal (설날). As such, I was lucky enough to get a three-day-weekend in honor of the festivities. I would have forgotten about the holiday, except for the cheerful children half-filing, half-prancing out of my classroom calling back to me "Happy New Year, Katie Teacher" (or Olleh KT teacher... or KTX teacher...) Also, my branch manager was nice enough to a) let us cut out of work 1.5 hours early and b) gave us Pantene Pro-V gift sets in honor of the biggest holiday in Korea. Naturally, my Korean coworkers got some chamchi (tuna - 참치) instead. Which brings me to a slightly random point. Chuseok, Korean "Thanksgiving," and Seollal have a really funny commonality. For Chuseok, it is completely normal for Koreans to give ... read more

Happy New Year everyone!! We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season and welcomed the new year in style! A quick word about our Christmas in Korea. There's really not much to say-without our family and friends from home, it just wasn't the same - we even had taekwondo class on Christmas Eve, as if it were just any other day! We had a potluck dinner with all the other foreigners in Yangsan on Christmas Day, then Mike and I spent the weekend in Busan, enjoying the sunshine on the beach (we actually walked along the beach in just t-shirts it was so warm!) and exploring some new (to-us) areas of Busan. We walked down to a new beach, Seongjoeng Beach, along the way picking up some pretty seashells and being partly intrigued, partly ... read more

Ahoy there, reader. Yesterday, my first day, was awesome. I asked one of the persons at the front desk how I could get to the closest subway station. It wasnt very hard. The maps of this area make things look a lot farther than they really are. Or maybe it's the layout of things here that make them seem closer and the map is actually accurate. Who knows. But anyhow, it was still really early so I took a stroll around the area to look around and explore the hotel and surrounding area. I got to Chungmuro station and looked around there. This girl who works with the subway helped me get my ticket and told me what I needed to do to get to Gangnam station. And off I went. Navigating through the station was ... read more
