Dear. Mr. Lee I truly want to express my appriciation about what you've done as the Mayor of Seoul and CEO of Hyundae Construction. When you were a Mayor, you adopted an evvironmental policy. You revived the Cheong-gye stream. And you also earned a lot of money by pragmatic policies, when you were a CEO. Korean citizens voted for you without hesitation because of your practical pledges. One of them is the FTA with US. The FTA ratification is necessary to tighten an alliance with US as well as boom the Korean economy. Importing US beef is not, however, right in twofold. US beef could cause mad cow disease which poses a health threat to consumers. Our government did not secure the enough BSE vaccine and gave up our quarantine sovereignty. Once the citizens who have ... read more

Hey All! This will be a short blog, I really don't have too much to report. I have been really sick with a lovely combination of flu and chest cold. The flu kept me from work twice last week, and the chest cold loves to keep me up at night coughing. I was told the Yellow Dust (that comes in the wind from China) was to be ending shortly. Apparently, this person was mistaken, and it is just beginning. It will last about two months, and there are days when looking at the mountains it appears as if they are shrouded in a yellowish blanket. Unfortunately, the effects of the Yellow Dust are not just the inability to breathe, but it also can carry bacteria and disease. Fabulous. On that note, Daniel and I have decided ... read more

Saturday, without distinction of age or sex, there are lots of people who well-dress up as if they have already finished being ready for climbing and people's passion appears among them in front of subway line number 4 Surisan station. In early morning, the sky was so cloudy as if the shower is about to be poured, however, the sunshine which could barely see before, suddenly popped energetically out of clouds just like a Greek's brave man who takes a step forward Sparta. Everywhere, the flowers such as a violet azalea and a perfectly yellow forsythia burst into blossom and are in all glory, include azalea and forsythia, a tons of cherry blossoms flow in the wind which is kind of breeze. The mountain, mother of trees, flowers, and rocks, embrace people peacefully and lead them ... read more

Last Sunday Daniel and I took a train to the Changdeokgung Palace (about 100 mins.) which was the home of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty. It was built in 1405 and was destroyed by the Japanese during the Imjin Invasion (1592-1598). Unlike the neighboring palace of Gyeongbokgung which was constructed on flat land and had a perfectly North and South axis layout, the Changdeokgung was built in the mountainside and thus the design considered the geographical landscape and looked more natural. The Palace does not allow people to wander the grounds anymore, for they found that the traffic was destroying the grounds. Therefore, you have to take one of the scheduled tours, and they occur less frequently for English-speaking tourists, just three times a day. A few interesting things we learned; -There are large pots ... read more

Suri mountain has been loved by An-yang citizen for its genial environment. Even if last Wednesday was cloudy, it was the best day for mountain climbing since it was not too hot and moreover it was national holiday for election. While I was waiting for 9 bus for An-yang, I saw many mountain climbers who were just from voting. They seemed very excited like children who go on a picnic. Since the weatherman said that it would be rainy, I took an umbrella. By the time I got to An-yang, the sky became covered with clouds and soon started raining. My starting point was backyard of a university library, but as I climbed the mountain, my university melted into the distance and finally it looked like a spot on my eyes. The scenary of university ... read more

As I write this blog, Dan is sleeping next to me, which means that he is (yay!) home from being away for two weeks. While I hate that he was gone for so long, I’m proud of myself for my attitude about the whole situation. I’d like to think I’m not one of those women who falls apart when their husband can’t be home with them every night. And given my unique circumstances being that I am so far from home, I am really happy that these two weeks seemed to fly by, and since I kept myself busy with working and hanging out with new friends, it really wasn’t so bad. Friday Dan and I went to Uijungbu (WEE-jong-boo) with Dyer (one of the guys in his unit) and his Korean girlfriend. She owns a ... read more

I am not quite local, not quite stranger. I am either a local stranger or a strange local After completing our first year of living in Korea, we've gone through the culture shock and emerged stiff kneed, well soaked, bad-breathed, Hangul- (Korean writing) reading, and with some well worn shoes. We no longer feel compelled to eat Korean food when we go out, we now cook Doenjanjiggae at home for supper and treat ourselves at the closest Indian restaurant. Along the way I made a (far from exhaustive) list of things that seemed unusual at the time. Looking back on it now it seems pretty normal, so I guess that means a whole new culture shock experience when we get home. Anyway, as way to wrap up our first year, here is my list of interesting ... read more
