Hello, I am a but slow at getting going with these things, I apologize! You know, me and technology, we are not exactly friends! So how is life in Ilsan, South Korea, you might ask? Well, it is interesting to say the least! And different of course. Here are a few adventures or misadventures shall I say? Everything looked the same when I first got here, neon, neon and more neon, oh and people and cars everywhere! So my first morning in town, I decide it would be a good idea to walk to work. Not that smart! I end up lost, of course, and I had to call Taryn (the other foreign teacher at my school) for help. Luckily she met up with me but we were both late. It's always nice to make a ... read more

I'm starting to think Korean now. No, not the language. With everything I do, I am starting to imagine what it will be like in Korea, how I would perform the same acts, what it will look like and feel like. While making dinner just last night, I wondered "will there be StoveTop Stuffing in Korea? Probably not. What will I cook as a side dish instead? Will it be vegetables, some sort of cabbage similar to kimchi?" Then lying in my bed at night I wondered "My room will be smaller. Probably my bed smaller and maybe my comforter won't be quite as comfortable. I won't be on the second floor of a house in a neighborhood I grew up in, but probably on the 8th floor of an apartment building in a country ... read more

Hello, hello, Well, here's the promised blog detailing my current living situation. It took me a while to get settled in and force myself to sit down and start writing it. But here I am! Let's start at the beginning. So, I flew into Incheon international airport on September 17th in the evening, after a very long and sleepless flight. After collecting my luggage, I headed toward the exit doors and tried to find someone holding a sign with my name on it. I was really looking forward to that but no luck! So there I was, standing in the airport arrival area, without my recruiter or my boss' phone number because I didn't think to write that stuff down! Smart move. So I walked in circles for a while and started looking for internet while ... read more

Chusok is the name for Korea's version of Thanksgiving Holidays. This year we apparently lucked out as to what days the holiday fell on because we only had to work the Monday of the week!!! The Tuesday was National Foundation Day (October 3rd) - separate from Chusok, but nonetheless it was still a day off! Chusok day is actually the 6th, but the 5th and 7th are also holidays. The idea is to allow people enough time off work so that they can go back to their hometowns and spend time with family and also visit the grave sites of ancestors. As a result, most large cities become deserted and highways are rammed with carloads of families traveling to their hometown. During the Monday of this week all the kindergarten children came to school dressed ... read more

The next part of our exciting married life has started - in Korea , and with several BIG changes: 1. We’ve got LOTS of friends (well, compared to Mongolia anyway) 2. We’ve become media superstars 3. We are, at last, WARM! Leaving Mongolia was relatively easy. The final few weeks in UB were spent battling bureaucracy and standing in the frozen streets for hours on end to get an exit visa for Mongolia and a work visa for Korea . Consequently, we never did make it to the Ice Festival at Lake Khuvsgul . Mongolia saw us off in style though…It was minus 43 degrees on the day we left. Despite the cold, we still managed to thaw some tears at the airport with Muugii, our friend who had practically been living in our lounge room ... read more
