Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Well after taking a tour of Manila yesterday I must admit for someone who usually is a hermit all of this travel is starting to wear me down so after buy some cheap dvd's yesterday I decided to spend today sitting in my hotel room ordering room service, sitting on my netbook, and watching dvd's. Manila is an amazing city where you can go from advanced and new buildings to poverty the likes I have never seen in one city block. It has been incredibly hot and I haven't taken many pictures as I feel almost rude taking pictures of poverty. [View Full Entry]

.Manila, Philippines Thursday April 16th, 2009 Last port before Hong Kong and disembarking Lovely beautiful sunny day, all day but H O T We started off by getting our meeting plans crossed, I got off the boat at 7:30 as soon as the ship was cleared, but the plan was to meet at St-Agustin church at 8:30. Finally around 8, waiting in the sun with the dancers and the drummers there to welcome us, everybody got together, 12 of us, which is too many, we started walking very fast to the east end of the walled Old city called Intramuros. We left Beijing mid-morning Sunday for our overnight train to Guangzhou (AKA Canton and pronounced “gwong JOE”) in southern China. We could have flown for about two hours to make the connection for our next flight, but then we’d fly over about half of China north to south. We opted instead for a sleeper train where we could at least look out the window as the countryside and the people flashed by. The scenery was very urban for what seemed like an eternity leaving Beijing. But the then it is a city of 17 Million people and about 17,000 square kilometers [View Full Entry]

Just a quick note before we get down to business - we've noticed this website has been pretty temperamental of late, so if it doesn't let you look at our blogs the first time you click the link, wait a few hours, or until the next day, and it should work again. Apologies for this, if you missed our last monster blog, you can still find it by searching our blog history. It is a rather long one so, combined with this entry, you make have to take a whole day off work to read them both. But, why not? [View Full Entry]

Our cruise across the Indian Ocean up to Bali was great. The seas were as flat as a floor—according to Captain Dag. It seems that we always enjoy good weather in this ocean, so we always look forward to our time cruising on this vast expanse of water. We arrived off of Bali at dawn and watched a beautiful sunrise. The clouds in this part of the world look different to me. Veteran sailors describe these white fluffy things as sky blooms and they look especially flowery when edged with the morning pinks and oranges. Bali is one of the 13,000+ [View Full Entry]

The Philippines, from the tiny part we saw, a great place with the friendliest and most polite people we have met. People address you as "sir", "mam" and everybody greets you from the security guy on the door to the cleaner. It's actually quite unusual at first but then you just get used to it and in turn always have a smile and a greeting ready too. As I was told by my make-up guy( for the wedding), the Filipino people are very resilient; they've had so many knocks and hard times but they will always smile and keep going. "Heh [View Full Entry]

A co-worker forwarded an email talking about a floating library called MV Doulos. I then read about it, found it interesting, and decided that I wanted to check it out. I was able to make one friend who i knew loves books, tag along. The ship was at a pier in Manila. We live at the Metropolitan area and the part where the ship is docked was unfamiliar to us. We found our way with the help of several security guards whom we asked for directions. By the port area's main gate, we were greeted by two jogging men who offered [View Full Entry]

I screamed with pain as the healer swung his double-edged, razor-sharp sword full force into my belly. It was agonizing but somehow felt more like being hit by a metal rod than a sword. "Stop, stop," I cried, "I don't want any more!" But I had begun now, and other people held me back. I received two more blows to the stomach and three on my leg, all equally excruciating and producing cries at a similar volume. Afterwards I looked at the areas of flesh he had struck and sure enough there were three long thin red marks where the blade [View Full Entry]

Once back we had a wicked day doing a lot of what Manila has to offer: Intermuros and coconut palace. In Manila airport at the mo and they over booked the flight, so we've been delayed 6 hours. The Philippines was wicked and we hope to visit again sometime soon. Rob, Marg, Angus and Francie have open invitations to visit anytime. Bring on Thailand! [View Full Entry]
