Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

It's 8:20am here. Mom and I just finished having breakfast...Dad left for Cebu this morning. He has his 50th High School reunion this week. So far jet lag hasn't been too bad. I think leaving at 1am helped since we were able to sleep at a normal time. So to back track...we landed in Manila at about 12:30pm Manila time. Going through immigration wasn't bad but it took about 30 minutes - the lines weren't that long either. We all were getting a bit flustered but I am sure it's just because we were ready just to be there and out [View Full Entry]

Good Morning! O well for you it's actually Good Afternoon! It's about 5:45am Monday here - so 3:45pm Sunday for you. I slept in Moms room last night and we both kept waking up all night. I guess we haven't evaded jet lag. :) So yesterday after we went to Church we went to go see Lolo. His ashes are actually just behind the church. It's a beautiful memorial for him. There is this veranda type thing that has several peoples ashes almost entombed there - I don't know if that makes sense. It's hard to explain. He was actually buried [View Full Entry]

02.01.09 - The journey from L.A. was a bit of a nightmare as we arrived at Singapore at 1.30 in the morning and then had to kill around 11 hours until our flight to Manila. Fortunately the airport is amazing so we were actually awake for most of this time, exploring its many lounges, ponds and shops. Manila. Good God Manila. I really can't think of much positive to say. We got a taxi from the airport. Arrival at hostel of choice - three children were knocking on the window for more money before we even got out of the door. [View Full Entry]

Day 73 - December 22, 2008 Traffic in Manila HE SAID: (GIM'S PERSPECTIVE) Judy, Momoy and Trushi are our tour guides for today. Judy took us to Bonifacio High Street, a new mall in Taguig. They showed us around Quiapo, the stalls under the Quiapo bridge, the Quiapo church, Chinatown (“Ongpin”), the electronics area (“Raon”) and the narrow, dirty, and crowded streets of Manila. Traffic jams are part everyday life in Manila. We got a Chinese ham, flipflops, and chestnuts. Because of the economy, Christmas is disappointingly lackluster this year, so we went to [View Full Entry]

Oh what a night!!!
The last couple of weeks have been very chilled out, but NEVER boring. Week nights are filled with playing Tongits with family and on the weekends I have been lucky enough to watch some amazing bands; my cousin AJ's band 'Tabass' included. Last week Saturday my cousin LJ, who recently turned 18, had hosted a joint celebration with a friend at a place called AL's bar in BF. There were 6 bands, most of them friends or friends of friends who were willing to come along and play just for the fun of it. The bands were all brilliant, especially since [View Full Entry]

I read about the transport getting from and to the airport and had prepared for the worst, but actually it wasn't too bad. As long as you take a taxi that is. We decided to go for the cheap way; a taxi taking us from the airport to the nearest LTR station, which would take us near our hotel, and if needed, another one to take us there in case we couldn't find it or it was too far too walk. Oh my god, entering the LTR station, the line to buy a ticket was so tremendously long, it would've taken [View Full Entry]

Dear all, Its been a while since I last wrote but I am now back in the real world! We spent a month on Gili Trawangan near Lombok and really enjoyed our time there. The diving was amazing and we made lots of new friends. We stayed in a lovely room and both felt quite sad to leave. Being on a paradise island was not without its own frustrations including lack of abilty to communicate with the rest of the world, frequent power cuts and lack of any medical facilities. I had a bad stomach bug and had to tell the [View Full Entry]

Sat 11/29 So let's cut out my amazing introduction and skip right to the part where I'm at LAX airport and China Airlines tells me that they have no ticket for me . That was fun. But after assuaging (begging) some key personnel I am whisked off to the airport office where I contacted STA Travel to reissue my ticket. I can already see not having a cell phone was a good idea at the time. 19 hours, 4 meals, and 1 layover in Taipei, Taiwan later, I arrive at my first destination: Manila, Philippines. I am to meet Tara's aunt [View Full Entry]

Good day all, Welcome to Republika ng Pilipinas (Republic of Philippines)!!! I spent a total of 12 days in this beautiful country. The Philippines consist of more than 7.000 islands with a total population of about 90 million, excluding the ca. 1,5 million Filipinos working overseas. The currency is the Philippine Piso (PHP). US$ 1 = PHP 49 and € 1 = 62 PHP during my stay in the country. The president here is a woman, called Gloria Arroyo, who is in power since 2001. Philippines once had the second largest economy in Asia after Japan, but since dictator Ferdinand Marcos [View Full Entry]
