Monday 4th April 2016 When the taxi driver arrived at 4:30am it was still dark and we were both very tired. After a 20 minute drive though we arrived at the airport and were on the flight by 6am and had landed in Kota Kinabalu for just after 7:30am. We now had to wait until 11am for our next flight which would take us to Manila. We used the time chatting and trying to plan for the Philippines but this didn’t go very well. The flight was 2 hours long and was smooth all the way until we came in to land. The plane was hitting some pretty bad turbulence and this is quite worrying when landing in Manila because the airport is weirdly in the centre of the city, so as you descend you feel ... read more

We began our trip to the Philippines in Penang airport where I spent our ringgit on a massage! This was like no other chair massage I'd had before! The intensity of it lifted me right up off the chair! We arrived in Singapore and I have to say it is the best airport in the world, I'll even forgive them their expensive beer. There's a pretty garden, gaming area, a swimming pool and a cinema all free to use. There are also power sockets everywhere to charge up your gadgets for onward flights and computer desks to use (also free). It is also super clean, so clean you could eat your dinner off the floor lol! We arrived in Manila in the evening and caught our transfer to our nearby hotel. Just from how the airport ... read more

It’s warm, 35 degrees. Our car picks us up from the airport and we head into the manic manila traffic. Asia hits our senses; roads gridlocked with jeepneys, tricycles, motor bikes, taxi, buses, the noise of incessant horns tooting, with a lack of rain; the pungent smell from the stagnant drains mingled with smoke in the air. Ahh Asia, we love it! As we head into the business district, cars, mainly SUVs, join the fun. Every rentable vehicle has its own name, jeepneys, tricycles and even taxis, like Maurice, Batman, Sweetheart or Bigma. We are staying in the red light district for foreigners, its cheap, I assure you that’s the only reason! There are a few bars full of old European men and, in the streets, Filipino women. Once again Carl gets regularly offered Viagra, and ... read more

Men on stilts, beautiful girls playing xylophones, dancers and costumed natives greeted us as we arrived in Manila this morning. It was a beautiful sight and made for good entertainment early in the day. Our first stop was the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial where 17,000 Americans are buried. It is was a solemn sight and the location is beautiful. A couple of hours navigating traffic, apparently snarled due to an accident, we finally arrived at La Loma, a marketplace renowned for its suckling pigs. We didn’t sample any… On to a Chinese cemetery where we found 2 story mausoleums, some with running water and air conditioning as the families tend to spend time there in reverence to their ancestors. We were told the Chinese are wealthy in the Philippines and their burial grounds show it. Lunch ... read more

Black bag anyone? Got some hours of sleep before I did one last check for passport and tickets before it was time to jump on the skybus. It’s something special about being in a sleeping big city with just a few people out. You have time to reflect to the people running past you and have a wonder where they’re going and who they are. To look up at the massive buildings and feel so small but still so safe there, I’m a small town girl but I will miss the capturing powerful feeling of a big city. I found the bus stop, couldn’t be much harder to travel The Philippines than to find the right bus stop, I would say that mission 1 is completed. Time for check in, looking down at my small black ... read more

At least once in every person's life, they have an experience that changes them. Forever, and hopefully for the better. An event, or an experience... a person, or a place... a lesson, or a thought. For each person, that life-changing experience is unique to them and cannot be duplicated or repeated. I believe I have had several of these experiences, some immediately making my life better while others I struggled to find the light side of the situation. The births of my niece and nephew are two that particularly stand out in my mind as some of the most positive things in my life. Spending a semester overseas and leaving home for the first time was a big turning point for me... and I believe the beginning of my constant urge to explore the next city ... read more

To begin with my adventure to Manila, I have to backtrack a little bit to Hong Kong. The day I was scheduled to leave Hong Kong, I had to leave my hostel by 6am to get to the airport. No big deal, the bus that I took from the airport to get to my hostel started running that early, all I had to do was go back to that stop and take the same bus! Or so I thought. What I failed to realize was that there was a huge marathon in Hong Kong. Right in the area my hostel was. Road blocks were up every where. I found the bus stop... only to realize my bus wouldn't be running in that area that day. Crap. Problem #1. OK, turn around and walk half a mile ... read more
