Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

After our noon flight from Puerto Princesa to Cebu city, we headed to the north of Cebu island by bus, a three hour trip that brought us to the little port of Hagnaya where the ferry to Bantayan Island leaves. A lunch consisting of barbequed chicken and San Miguel gave us the energy needed for the one and a half hour boat trip to Santa Fe on Bantanyan Island. Immediately after arrival brochures off all kinds were stuffed in our faces, displaying accomodation ranging from 4 star resorts for unaffordable prices to beach bungalows that were more in line with our [View Full Entry]

11:00PM 09/18/2008 Leaving the Office I left the office on the night of Sep19 and hailed a cab going home. Fortunately, i got an MGE taxi and while the driver was driving me home, he asked if I was in a hurry. I told him "a bit", and mentioned that I have a flight at 4am going to Cebu with my girlfriend. He asked me if I want to be picked up, I said "Yes", please pick us up between 1:00 and 1:30am. I stepped in our condo and saw that my girlfriend was still sleeping. She was a bit frustrated [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't written in a while; it's been hectic! After the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute, we spent a few more days in Davao. We went to the beach, and were able to visit with an environmental NGO, Interface Development Interventions Inc. (IDIS), and Bantay Bata 163. The environmental NGO is mainly concerned with the spraying of pesticides on the local fruits and produce, and the side affects it has on the people. Big companies, such as Dole and Del Monte, have been spraying there since the 70s and it wasn't until 2000 that NGOs were informing the locals about [View Full Entry]

As hoped in our last blog we've just arrived at the internet cafe directly from the beach. Unfortunately Hannes experienced some problems with his snorkelling mask but we both felt better after a few shakes (coconut, banana/rhum and mango). Not a bad day on the whole. The ferry trip from Manila to Cebu was comfortable but not that exciting. We did, however, finally hear some of the infamous karaoke. The Filipinos were actually quite good at it which in Sweden wouldn't be fair to the audience since they wouldn't have anything to laugh at. In the Philippines the karaoke singer is [View Full Entry]

Ok… so, where to start…it’s HOT!!! And when I say hot I mean stinky, sweaty, have to wear way too much sunscreen, can’t walk five feet to the ocean without sweating HOT!!! But with that said did I mention we literally only have to walk 5 feet from our room to the ocean so in reality things are fantastic. We arrived in the Philippines a week ago and after two nights in Cebu City (just enough time to adjust to the time change and get our bearings) we headed north to a small island called Bantayan. The bus ride to the [View Full Entry]

Our first taste of the Philippines (from Manila) left us in great spirits and eager to discover more of this amazing country, so off we went on our way and starting with for a short stop over in Cebu city. Our stop only gave us just a small taste of the city. During the day we visited the Carbon Market which is a huge, mainly fresh produce market i.e. quite nice to see but nothing of interest to buy. Walked through the city to the famous Cross of Magellan which is one of the city's top attractions but is literally a [View Full Entry]

Off to the Beach Asia » Philippines » Cebu » Bantayan » Sta Fe
I'm just relaxing at Bantayan at the moment. It's low season so there was pretty much just me on the beach for a quite a long time. Unfortunately, the sand wasn't as nice as the picture--it never is. Lots of shell bits. I saw a baby jellyfish. I think it's the first time I've ever seen a jelly fish. It was so small--pretty dark coloured though. I've never seen a jellyfish but I assumed that that is what is was...hm...Anyways, it was all on its own near the shore. Perhaps it was dead. I have no idea. I thought about touching [View Full Entry]

Two Weeks in the Philippines: Part III: Bantayan and Cebu City We arrived in Cebu City around 5 p.m., much later that planned, and had to decide whether to stay in the city for the night or try and take a private car up to Bantayan. I knew we wouldn't make it for the last ferry, so either way we would be spending the night someplace other than where we planned. Charito called up one of her friends who lives in Cebu and she said she has a friend who drives to Bantayan all the time, so we called him up [View Full Entry]
