Tuesday afternoon Pema, Shanti, Anjali & I visited the department store/supermarket for a spot of retail therapy. It also doubled as a bit of an educational excursion as I explained to the girls the functions of microwave ovens, hosty toasty machines & conventional ovens. The big news though is one of the young children Suraj, was hit by a Tempo (a 3 wheeled taxi, more commonly known as a Tuk Tuk), whilst crossing the road coming home from school today. He was attended at the scene by a passing doctor, who put him on the back of a motorcycle & took him to the nearest hospital. They x-rayed him, found a fractured chin & cheek & transferred him to the National Dental Hospital across the road from Mukti. The doctor assessed him late Tuesday night & ... read more

well well well... we went to the bungy jump and we lived to tell the tale - it is the second highest jump in the WORLD!!!! so jason went off head first dive style with straps only on his feet (still dont know how ppl can do that?!) and then rachel - who hates roller coasters mind you, nevermind heights did the swing - which falls for longer, has a harness around your chest and legs, and lets you go feet first.... it took her about a half an hour (not really, but maybe...) to jump, but everyone was impressed i guess bc usually when ppl wait that long and get themselves all worked up they dont go - BUT i freaking did it so there!!!! i had the option to jump again head first style ... read more

soooo... it has been quite awhile and we apoligize for that - our days were both very long for the past 2 weeks - jason got moved to a different school bc his other school was having exams and then a week of holiday so instead of getting home at 2pm he wouldnt get home until after 4pm. we also took 14 hours of Nepali lessons over the last two weeks - it was a lot of fun, the teacher was great, we joked around with him all the time - it has also been helpful as you could imagine, people seem to appreciate that we are trying to learn and use their language... so the weekend after we went to Chitwan National Park we stayed in the Kathmandu valley to do some temple sight seeing. ... read more

Tuesday passed by with a couple hours at Cyber, then we had some visitors sent to Mukti from the US Embassy, which is located just around the corner. There was an older man, originally from Hawaii, who is now travelling around Asia & who reminded me of Father Christmas. He entertained the kids with a bit of dance & song with his harmonica & we chatted briefly about his love of children & how he would like to open his own orphanage one day. Our other guest was a Swiss lady who had just adopted a Nepali baby. I am not sure how this trio came to be, or why they were visiting us, but they arrived & departed together after something to eat & a bit of a chat. The new washing machine that Isabelle ... read more

Got a bus to our rendevous point to meet our instructor and boat. Wasn't too impressed when we saw the boat, it was patched up with 20 odd patches all with old flaking glue over it. they attepted to blow up the boat and it deflated imediately. So we called for the backup, which was even older but didn't deflate as quickely, which was a good sign. We brought the pump with us so we could pump it up every hour and off we went. Rafting for a day in Nepal was awesome, the river was high because of the monsoon rain so the current was much harder and difficult, but with the combination of two English fellos, three Chinese, three Koreans and our Nepalese instructor we powered through and came out alive and well. No ... read more

Darjeeling was nice but rainy and the supposedly amazing views Mount Everest and some other incredibly large mountain were covered by clouds. Anyway we watched our first Hindi Film called 'Corprate', got the jist of it but it was in hindi. Next stop Nepal!!! Arrived at the border hoping to change money, there were three banks but no one accepted dollars, sterling or even my Sterling and US dollar travellors cheques for some reason, they said come back tommorrow, what difference does that make I said, they gave me the same answer. Well the bus ride was 1000 rupees each and we only had 265 rupees and it was about to leave in 15 minutes. With a bit of hard negotiation work and a lot of running around I managed to pay one tour opporater with ... read more

hi everyone!!! this one is going to be short - but just wanted to say hello! we went to Patan Durbar Square and Kathmandu Durbar Square which means Palace Square. We basically saw a lot of temples and the old and new royal palaces. we even got to see the living Goddess Kimara, which we can explain about in more detail later. This weekend we might fly to Pokhara (but its a little expensive) or go to the Last Resort to bungie jump at the 2nd highest bungie jump in the world (Rachel is very hesitant about this, but Jason wants to go...) anyways, all is well!! Rachel got a Sari made for her and Jason got a suit tailored, it is fun! okay love and miss everyone very much!!! miss you too jenna baby!!! love ... read more

Tuesday was fairly uneventful, except I was so determined to get out for a while that I walked to Cyber in the pouring rain, failing to notice the power was out, so I had wasted my time! We did have some visitors in the afternoon & the children put on a display of traditional Nepali dancing to entertain them. Pranod is a Nepali Anthropologist who speaks English & fluent French as he lived in Paris for many years. Alexandra works for an Italian adoption agency & has been sent to Kathmandu to open a new office. She will be here for quite some time, visiting orphanages & making contacts to facilitate speedy adoptions of Nepali children by Italian parents. She also speaks a multitude of languages including Italian, English, Chinese, Russian & I think some French ... read more

Ok, where was I.... Yes Mam and Dad I'm in Nepal, but leaving on Wednesday to g to the border with Tibet. Have had some fun filled days, now have company. Woo Hoo!! Last time I spoke was on Friday... Did I mention that I went to the football sadium and got involved in a protest with regards to the Zidane episode and his punishment. The locals got me to sign a big mural that they are planng to send to the FIFA? On the way home from this watched an arrest, not really what for, but it is amazing how many police it takes in Nepal to put one person into a van. there were about 15 of them, mostly lounging around, watching and gobbing!!! So yeserday during the day I did lots of visitin ... read more

We are in Katmandu, our first vacation spot on our trip. It is 180 degrees different then Tibet. Not only the scenery that changed from our decent from the dry mountains of the Tibetan platue to the green, river filled hills for Katmandu valley. If China was a very regulated place then immediately after crossing the boarder you feel the chaos of the Far East. The smells of insent (KTORET) and curry. The language is suddenly familiar (English). Even the driving is done on the other side of the road so not to confuse this place with china. We also have for the first time in over a month a shower in the room at a real hotel (with a lobby and everything) and all we could do is sing the Holy-Holiday song :) In the ... read more
