Thorough trek preparations....... After debating whether we could carry our own bags full of clothes, sleeping bags, loo rolls and "mountain man bars" (possibly the most dense substance known to man)", we decided it would be best to get a porter for the trek. After all it is putting something back into the local economy, which is our justification. We signed up with Swissa (who organised our rafting) and they arranged us to meet our porter the night before we left to check he was ok. We were expecting a wirey old Nepali man with a hunch back from carrying bags for a living. However, we were surprised when a young lad in designer sunglasses and fancy dyed hair turned up. His name was Madhav and over the next 18 days he would become "Madhav the ... read more

Namaste. I am having to pedal to keep this computer working so please bear with me. I got back from trekking last saturday and had an absolutely amazing time. It is such a great way to experience the scenery and culture of this country and a proper little adventure. The trail is old mountain trade routes only accessible by two or four legs and it takes you from sub tropical all the way through to alpine climates. I went independantly, carrying my equipment and took a total of 17 days to complete the annapurna circuit and the annapurna sanctuary treks. Along the way i met some interesting characters including an everest summiter, some maoists, a 90 year old buddhist hermit/lama who had lived in a cave for 35 years with his wife and a rather interesting ... read more

We could try and explain how awesome the Annapurna ciruit was, how many cool (and some strange) people we met along the way and how we can't wait to come back in the future. However, we reckon the best way to explain how we spent the past 21days is just to let you see the photos.... And give you a few stats: we walked from 900m up to 5450m- Thorong La, (with a 1000m climb and 1600m descent all in one hardcore day) back down to 1100m then back up to 4100m - Annapurna Base Camp. We've yet to count up how far we actually walked or our total meters climbed (this is reserved for a day when there is litterally nothing to do, read chat about - so it might be a while coming!) but ... read more

My love affair with Nepal started in 1999 when two of my friends from the U.S. and I headed off for a 3 week trek from the suburbs of Kathmandu, via the Holy Lakes of Gosainkund to the Langtang and back to Kathmandu. The next time I visited was 2002 when I dragged my friend John to trek for 2.5 weeks from Jiri to Tengboche. We liked this area so much we returned two years later for 7 weeks and trekked once again from Jiri and also went up Mera Peak and then via Lukla to Gokyo and Kala Patar and back out to Lukla to fly back to Kathmandu. Oct/Nov 2006 I'd planned to go to India but at the last minute got a cheap flight from Delhi to Kathmandu, emailed my good friend and ... read more

Well we finally made it to Kathmandu after two days in transit!!! What a relief after the hussle of India we relished in the relaxed environment for a couple of days before meeting up with our trekking guide. this was only to find out that due to his new born baby at home he wasn't going to be able to come with us to Annapurna, but had arranged another, more experienced guide (read old and boring!) and apparently "well educated" whioch he insited on us remind us along with the other guides which put a few noses out of joint which we heard first hand one morning when we over heard a screaming match at one of the places we stayed at anywho it took 7 hours on a bus to get to Pokhara apparently the ... read more

Around Annapurna Trek We began this 14-day trek in Pokhara, a small town residing Lake Fewa. After spending several days resting and enjoying the amazing chicken liver at Lima's (she really managed to target the Israeli taste) and hiring a nice porter-guide, we took the early morning bus to Besisahar, the starting point. It took us 6 days to reach Manang at 3500m, long days of 4 to 8 hours walks. The trail starts at a relatively low altitude so the first days were quite easy, but as we approached Manang things became more difficult and views became more Alpine-like. Rivers roared below when we crossed the shaky suspension bridges and white peaks popped out everywhere. We enjoyed a clear and sunny weather most of the days. The guest houses along the way were good and ... read more

We arrived in Kathmandu after a short flight from Delhi. The differences were immediately apparent. The bars and people were relaxed and the atmosphere was totally different to India. We spent time arranging our trek and got ready to leave on the bus to Pokhara, a town on the edge of the Annapurna range. Our trek lasted five days in total and we felt safe in the hands of our trusty guide and porter. Our guide, Ram, had 21 years of experience in the Himalayas, including assisting Edmund Hillary on an Everest expedition! The porter was only 19 and was from the Gurkha region of Nepal. Judging by his strength he really could have been a Gurkha soldier; he carried all our equipment in one enormous backpack up huge mountains leaving us, breathless, behind him. The ... read more

Macchapuchre base camp to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) After a good nights sleep we set off for ABC. It only took about 1 1/2hrs so we were there for about 10am. We had great views of the Annapurna mountain range and also Macchapuchre. It did not last too long though as the clouds followed us up the valley and it was really misty by 10:45. We spent the rest of the day in the tea house, just eating, drinking tea and coffee and playing cards. It felt like a real anti-climax being up there for so long and we were really restless - just wanting to start on the way down! Dinner was Pizza and chips (carbo loading for the descent!). We took loads of photos that we will probably not recognise when we get back. ... read more

Paul set the alarm for 5:45 to see the sunrise, but it was too cloudy so tried to go back to sleep - unfortunately Beckie awoke as bright as a button and they had a complete roll reversal!. Finally up about 6:30 to get ready for the day ahead. It was a 4 Hour trek this morning with no tea houses to stop at on the way. We are slowly contouring round to the main valley so alot of the terrain has been down, which is easy on the legs, but hard on the knees. The weather was good again, but it seemed to cloud over early in the afternoon - but so far it has remained dry. Managed to get most of our washing done and rested up as before we start gaining altitude. Paul ... read more

Today finally heralded the start of our trekking proper - well after a 2hr drive to Birethanti!. It was good to get going with the walking after just doing tourist things for the last couple of weeks. The weather was dry and fairly warm, which was a welcome change from Kathmandu as the rain brings the leeches out - with the aussies tales of Kangaroo leeches and Drop Bears it was all we needed! Had our first interaction with the Maoists when we had to pay a "tourist toll" to use the park (politics in action!!). Beckie did not believe they were Maoists and the trek leader is a bit of a clown so she asked to see their guns - and nearly fell over when he lifted his shirt and showed her a pistol.
