Kieron writes… Gemtle start to the trek. 10am taxi to trail head at Naya Pul, then 4 hours’ gentle undulations to Tikhedunga (which sounds like a Brazilian defensive midfielder circa 1986). Initial observations about trekking in the Himalaya: 1. My 5 day route is for whooses, I’m already wishing I had time for more 2. I’m glad I have my Indiana Jones hat, John McEnroe sweat band and snowboarding croakie (strap to keep one’s glasses from sliding down the schnauzer), but I look like a prat wearing all 3 3. The thin air aint a problem, but the sun burns pretty hot up here Met a Chelski fan descending from a “proper” 11 day Annapurna Base Camp trek. Given my Manyoo shirted attire and location 0.5 days from civilization, he correctly guessed I had footie results ... read more

Hallo Ihr Lieben!!! ... read more

This blog by Lucas and Jacqui: Before we get into the details of what was easily the best experience of our world tour so far, we want to do a quick guide to trekking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. It was exactly what we were looking for in other people's blogs on this site when planning our trip, but could not quite find. A little insight can make the trip that much easier (and it is very easy to begin with) and more enjoyable, and we hope it inspires all readers to get here as soon as possible. We'll start with our top tips and suggestions, and then you can scroll down if you want to see our trekking 'stats' in terms of route, time, villages, mountains, elevation, etc. Top tip #1: Go now! They are ... read more

This blog by Lucas: Trek summary: Day 1: 9 hour bus ride from KATHMANDU to BHULEBHULE via Mugling, Dumre, Besisahar Day2: 6hrs 10 min BHULEBHULE to JAGAT via Taranche, Ngadi, Usta, Lamtaka, Bahandanda, Ghermu, Sitaldada Day 3: 5hrs 25 min JAGAT to BAGARCHAP via Chamje, Tal, Dharapani, Thonje Day 4: 3hrs 25min BAGARCHAP to CHAME via Danaqu, Temang, Thanchok After our organizational marathon in Kathmandu we were eager to get on the trail. We boarded a local bus with excitment and anticipation for our trekking adventure, sharing the next 9 hours from Kathmandu to BhuleBhule with goats, schoolchildren, farmers, our guide Thakur and porter Rajkumar (Raj), and other fellow trekkers in fake North Face gear. Our bus driver was capable, if not a bit maniacal, as he careemed out of the hills of the lush Kathmandu ... read more

25/4/07 A nice 6am wakeup call to start the day off then a 6hr van ride to our starting point of Phedi. The drive was through a lot of rice paddy fields, past rivers, and numerous small towns. Was good to get out of the city and into fresh air. Plenty of burned out crashes along the way though so was nice and reassuring about the road safety in this country. Reached Phedi by 2.30pm just as it began pouring with rain. A short afternoon of hiking was before us up through small villages fill of beautiful people carrying out various daily jobs of collecting firewood and so on. Our poor porters powered on up ahead each carrying 2-3 bags. First stop was Dhampus (1600m) in a small but nice tea lodge. The next day most ... read more

I had quite a bit of trouble deciding what the title of this udpate should be as my time in Nepal has varied greatly. After a month in the country I am not really sure what my opinion of it is, or where it ranks in the growing list of places I've been to. I have started to realize though just how many factors may influence your experience in a country: where you are coming from, how much money you have, how long you have been away for, and all the little individual experiences that you have whilst there. For those that have been waiting for a blog update here it is. It's a long one and if you are like me and prefer to just look at the pictures, well I've taken some time ... read more

Trekking. It's the ultimate in guiltfree chocolate indulgences. You can justify scoffing loads of chocolate by reasoning that it is infact "energy" and when faced with a steep mountain ascent (all that lies between you and a hot shower) - you need all the help you can get. Help sometimes takes the form of small wrapped parcels of chocolate and peanut joy which can be guiltlessly devoured (safe with the knowledge that the calories will be worked off sometime during the next several hours of your uphill slog!). Our score: 15 mini snickers bars, and 3 full size ones - not too bad for 10 days trekking and for three people! We've just returned from the Jomsom/Muktinath trek which forms the second half of the famous 3 week Annapurna Circuit, but can be done as a ... read more

The Apple Pie Circuit Chris and I got back yesterday from a 15 day trek around the Annapurna range of mountains - its thought to be one of the worlds classic treks and I can certainly see why! I've included quite a few photos here, and I took tonnes more - unfortunately (but understandably) this site forces me to reduce the size of the shots so they aren't as good quality as the 'real' pics. Anyway, my pictures don't do the place justice - no-ones could - the views and people and the trekking is absolutely breathtaking - I'd strongly recommend this trip to anyone - particularly as they are building a road up both sides of the valley, so probably best to do the trek soon... Anyway, I'll not go into everyday of the ... read more
