On my way from New Zealand to England I got the chance to have a five day sojourn in the conveniantly eqidistant Malaysia. Originally I had to contemplate myself sitting in a beach restaurant holding a pina colada or a mojito, the waves nearby gently lapping on the shore, the sun setting on the distant horizon and the opposite chair of my romantic table for two... EMPTY! Thank god my girlfriend Maria Chiara spared me that fate and decided to throw any concerns of expense or jetlag out the window, and she joined me! The is both of our first trips to Malaysia and it took in two islands on the west coast: Penang and Langkawi. They both lived up to their sterling reputations: Penang for being an ex-colonial melting pot of culture and Langkawi for ... read more

For my Grade 5 Excusion week we went to Palau Besar in Malaysia. Palau Besar is an Island of Mersing, Johor and is a tropical paradise with tree-covered mountains and white sand beaches. On the way there, we went on the PIE highway to the Tuas second link bridge, the longest bridge in Southeast Asia. After we went through the check point (which had a wave hanger design), we went on the second link Tollway that connected with the North-South Fwy in Johor Bahru, the capital of Johor. We took that for awhile and then switched to the 3 to Mersing, the 3 went through fields of palm oil trees stretching toward the horizon. (The trees produce palm oil used to make plastic but in order to do that you have to release lots of Carbon Dioxide which ... read more

After a very pleasant 2 and a half weeks back in Australia visiting family and friends I caught a flight yet again to Malaysia. I arrived early in the morning, caught the bus into KL and then made my way to Bukit Bintang and found some accommodation. I had a quick shower and then caught a taxi to the Chinese visa centre to apply for a tourist visa. After a bit of confusion I eventually lodged my application and was told to return the following morning for an interview. The next morning I arrived early and after a 1 minute, 2 question interview I was told to come back a few days later to pick up my passport hopefullly with a 90 day visa in it. Seeing it was still early in the morning I decided ... read more

March 10 – 15 / 2012 It was a very long travel day getting from Koh Phangan in Thailand to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. We decided that in order for you guys to really understand a typical travel day for Goats On The Road, we should make a video. Check it out HERE! We spent 4 days shopping, eating and walking around markets in one of our favourite cities, Kuala Lumpur. We love coming back here and always have a great time. We took the monorail from downtown area to the bus station, then a bus to the airport. We flew out of Kuala Lumpur on a typical (and maddening) Air Asia flight that departed at 5:30am. Since we needed to be at the airport 3 hours before the flight, we just decided to sleep in ... read more

Welcome to Asia! Where the people are friendly and the beers are cheap(er). We started in Singapore, the state of many rules. A night in the cells for spitting on the street seemed to me to be a little extreme, but then I was warned. We spent our time here in what was an awesome hostel, apparently in asia things are done for you. For example the free breakfast toast was toasted by the receptionist, the pool table in the bar paid for and racked by the bar maid, the hawker stalls get a water out of the fridge for you, the list goes on! We also splashed some cash in an outdoor 50m pool, one whole singapore dollar. Singapore as a whole is pretty clean, and the centre in particular is ridiculous. Think upside-down sydney ... read more

Hiya everyone!! We have spent the last 5 nights in Kuala Lumpur and we have had a really good time it is a really cool city really reminds us of London. On our first night we stayed in Times Square which has the most amazing shopping centre it is huge and has a roller coaster. This area is the richer area and we only stayed here because everywhere else was booked up as the grand prix was on. The hostel we stayed in was really nice and all of the staff were helpful and gave us loads of advice. On our second day we bought tickets to go up the KL telecommunication tower it is one of the tallest ones in the world and the view was amazing we also moved hostel to one called Back ... read more

Today we didn’t really get up to a lot. We went on foot all day to just have a look around our immediate area. We went and had breakfast at Starbucks – coffee, danishes, and muffins. Good fill to start the day. We walked a few blocks. One thing we have noticed is that although most of the drains here are open, it is nowhere near as stinky as some areas we have been in Asia. After walking around the block we came across Central Market shipping mall. We had a look around and it had the usual department store, food court, many brand name stores, (although not high end) as well as market type stalls. Was good for a look around but nearly all malls are similar in any case to look around. We went ... read more

Today was a rather massive day...We woke up slightly later than we would have liked this morning and didn’t get on the road till 9am by the time we had breakfast and got the kiddies organised to leave for our drive to Mt Kinabalu. The drive to Mt Kinabalu took about 2 hrs, but somewhere along the way we took a wrong road so it maybe could have taken slightly less time. The drive was nothing like we expected. I expected it to be fairly flat with Mt Kinabalu just sticking up. It wasn’t this way at all. It is very mountainous the whole way. Not easy driving at all. Once at Mt Kinabalu National Park we decided to do the walk up to view the mountain and the waterfall. By the time we got up ... read more

Today started with Danika being up before everyone (not actually sure of the time as we woke up to find her sitting out on the balcony reading) as we had booked Dani and Zav in to be “Ranger for the day” at the Rasa Ria Resort where they have an Orang Utan rehabilitation centre. Before heading off to the Rasa we headed to the Gaya Street markets that are held every Sunday in KK. We got there by 8 and it was hot, noisy and bustling with people. There was a lot of the same same throughout the market but they were still worth a look around. There was lots of souvenirs, jewellery, cheap and crappy toys, clothing, handbags, live fish, puppies, kittens, guinea pigs, mice, turtles, and even toad wallets there was local coffee beans ... read more
