1. My friends and I made an arrangement to meet up in Kota Kinabalu before flying to Tawau (southernmost of Sabah). 2. It was close to mid-night when we arrived at Tawau Airport. We knew it would take another 2hrs of driving from airport to Semporna and we knew the risk of travelling at night especially in this area. Despite all the hesitation, we brave our self to hop on a minibus with local driver which I myself pretty comfortable that he would make our road trip a comfortable and safe ;) 3. Upon reaching Semporna, we quickly checked in at a small lodge located approx 20mins from Jetty. 4. The next day, our driver picked us at noon as our boat trip to Mabul would depart at 2pm. 5. The trip by boat took more ... read more

I had a great opportunity to meet an indigenous tribe in Malaysia while volunteering and here are the most interesting facts about them: People of the Batek Tribe of Malaysia are literally people of the jungle. Unfortunately, they were forced by the Malay government to leave the rainforest in 60‘. They used to live there in traditional shelters called “hayak“. Although they were forced to leave the rainforest and move to the edge of the national park, Taman Negara, they still retained their beautiful natural culture. They are small, shy, smiling people and they have their own unwritten language. What they enjoy the most is running through the rainforest, or at least around their village barefoot in the rain. There is no better way how to earn their respect than when you play soccer in a ... read more

De ... read more

Thirty percent of Sarawak's population belong to various indigenous groups known collectively as 'Orang Asli' (meaning 'Upriver People'). Customs, traditions, spiritual beliefs, language and way of life vary from one group to the next, though there are common threads that connect some (or all) of them to each other in different ways. The people who have traditionally lived a nomadic existence in the vicinity of what is now Gunung Mulu National Park identify themselves as the Penan. Interestingly, while the Penan have words for every kind of animal or plant that occurs within the rainforest, they have no specific word for the forest itself: they refer to it simply as 'Tongtana', which roughly translates as 'the world in which we live'. This makes sense given that traditionally the Penan spent their entire lives here, finding everything ... read more

With just ten days left in our month-long Malaysian holiday – and having fully immersed ourselves in the country's cultural offerings during the first three weeks – Linda and I decided it was time to heed the call of the wild and discover some of the country's natural assets. And when it comes to natural attractions in this part of the world, nothing we'd read about came close to matching the aura and mystique of Gunung Mulu National Park. Located in the heavily-forested interior of Borneo, the 500sq km park packs in mountains that rise up to 2300m high, featuring extraordinary geological formations such as the razor-sharp limestone spires of the Pinnacles, riddled with caves of truly epic proportions, and cloaked in some of the densest old-growth rainforest to be found anywhere on Earth – which ... read more

After two weeks on the 'mainland' of the Malay Peninsula, Linda and I took a flight two hours east from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching – the capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, and, if the guidebooks were to be believed, the most cosmopolitan city on the world's third-largest island: Borneo. With Linda still putting her insides back together after suffering some serious anxiety during the flight (and in particular the descent) we hopped in a taxi and headed into town, where thankfully our hostel was not only located smack bang in the centre of the city, just one block from the Sarawak River; but also a significant step up in comfort from our two previous hostels in Penang and Melaka. (It took the air conditioner in our room mere minutes to cool the room down ... read more

Sunday, 11th August 2019 After breakfast, we headed to the Sunday Market (Medan Niaga Satok) for some shopping opportunities. Since it was a holiday when we visited, closed to 70 percent of the stalls were not opened for business. Nevertheless, we found ways to entertain ourselves by posing plenty of wacky shots by the Sarawak River. We were back in the city centre by lunchtime. Starting from the atmospheric Old Courthouse building, we made our way to the Carpenter Street where there is a popular satay stall within the airy Lau Ya Keng Foodcourt. There were also other Sarawak staples - Kolo Mee and Laksa to fill our hungry stomachs. After lunch, the group of us headed for drinks at the Granary Cafe to cool down from the heat. It was free and easy for the ... read more

Saturday, 10th August 2019 The highlight of the day was not the visit to the Bako National Park even though I did enjoy the speedboat ride (without our life vests on) and the steep hiking trail that came with it. The weather was humid today and some of us were getting a bit restless during the guided walk. Thankfully, we were back to Kuching sometime after lunch. It was free and easy until dinner at Topspot Foodcourt, a congregation of seafood restaurants in the city centre. Prior to dinner, a few of them headed to the Kuching Waterfront for some nice sunset views while I headed for a much-needed body massage to soothe the nerves from the climb in the morning. I remembered that I had went to Topspot too during my last trip to the ... read more
