After travelling through 3 countries in 1 month we wanted to take some time off to relax a bit.. We had seen so many advertisements for all kinds of ' bounty islands' that were determined to go to our very own bounty island.. So there we went, off to the perhentian islands.. Well, it was everything we hoped for! The start was a bit stressful, we had taken the night bus from KL to Kuala Besut, and as most people who know me know, I can't sleep that well in buses.. So I was very tired and sleepy when we arrived in Kuala Besut at 5 am, where it was completely dark and we didn't have a clue where to go to. We kind of got dragged out of the bus by a guy from some ... read more

Undeterred by our failure to get on the cable car yesterday, we set off nice and early this morning in our teeny hire car to try again and were pleased to see sunny, dry skies. The road to the cable car is peppered with interesting scenery so every so often I would get Glynn to pull over somewhere and we'd go off for a little wander. We found long, golden sandy beaches far away from all the hotels and sheltered from the roadside by lines of palm trees with cattle grazing contentedly beneath. There were rice paddies, lighthouses, interesting bridges and a marina full of posh yachts waiting to be discovered, all of which I'm sure most tourists drive straight past. Eventually we found ourselves back at the cable car complex for the thrid time only ... read more

So the trip starts once again. After landing in back in Borneo I decided not to rough it and checked into the Hyatt to have a relaxing day or two before attemting this 4100m mountain. Room service of steak and chips helped me settle back into the Malay way of life. I was severley jet lagged but had no choice to climb it two days after my arrival since the mountain accomoation was fully booked until the end of October. I left KK at 7am on Monday for the mountain. I hooked up with an English mountaineer to do the climb with and share the cost of the guide. The first day climb was the hardest and we managed to do it in about 3 and a half hours. Not bad as the average is 5 ... read more

Langkawi offered us a little taste of paradise and some truly memorable moments - from watching the sun set on a golden sandy beach surrounded by tiny tropical islands to riding the world's longest single-cable cable car - it was all brilliant. There's an international airport on the island so I'm sure we'll be back!... read more

Selamat tengahari! My flight from Heathrow to KL was fairly uneventful. Unfortunately my flat is not let out so felt really stressed and left too many things to the last minute, some which didn't get done. Not how it was supposed to be! On Malaysian Airlines the downside was the cramped conditions (especially as I was perched in the middle of the middle row and had to actually climb over my neighbour to escape every now and again - very elegant I was!). The upside was the price, with the stopover, and the friendly and charming flight crew. In anticipation of my retreat in a health centre in Phuket, Thailand, I had enthusiastically pre-ordered a raw food menu. After cramming my possessions into one suitcase (the 4 boxes left the week earlier for a leisurely sea ... read more

The day after climbing the mountain I took a flight to Kuching, the capitak of Sarawak. I hooked up with a couple of nutty girls and we went to Bako National park the next day which is home to the rare probiscus monkey. Think I've spelt that wrong! We had to travel by bus and a tyre blew out. Not to worry the driver said and we carried on. Then an hours river boat to the park where we saw monitor lizards on route. We did a 6k trek the first day and didn'r see a bloddy thing! After a night trying to fight off the mozzies we did an 8k trail the next day. Absolutely fantastic and although I couldn't get good close up's of these long nosed elepahant monkeys we had a great day. ... read more

One of the few downsides of being on Langkawi is the lack of any public transport. While there are plenty of taxis, if you want to go anywhere beyond walking distance then the price soon starts to mount up. As there are plenty of attractions on the beautiful island we bypassed the taxi option and instead elected to hire a car for a couple of days. Now that might sound extravagant but if I told you that is cost us just 13 pounds for 2 days in a small hatchback, you'll no doubt be as surprised as we were. The place we most wanted to visit was the Langkawi cable car near the north-west of the island. Unfortunately for us, yesterday the weather wasn't on our side. We had picked the car up the night before ... read more

Well, just thinking about leaving Malaysia to head to Thailand! Spent the last few nights in Penang...which has been interesting to say the least.....we arrived to be dropped off half way down the island in the middle of nowhere, to be informed that they had built a new bus station and to catch the bus over there.........which we managed fairly successfully! Got off at (yep you guessed it) a shopping centre - although not quite so well AC'd as we would have liked.....then hotfooted it through town to China town to find oursleves a hostel and got ourselves a base! Next challenge was naturally dinner..........meandering around the streets looking pretty lost, an Australian couple took pity on us and asked if we needed help.....and recommended a Chinese place just up the road (failing to mention that ... read more

I can't believe that we almost didn't come to Langkawi. Sitting in Kuala Lumpur last week trying to plan our stay here in Malaysia, we ummed and ahhed about whether to venture this far north but we're both really glad we did. Langkawi is beautiful. We woke late this morning, at around 9am, having slept for 12 hours solid. We felt refreshed and raring to go so first job as always was to find our way around the immediate area. Unfortunately the restaurants near the hostel are all a bit pricey so it looks like we won't be eating out while we're here... We took a lovely long stroll along the beach which has to rival anything we've seen so far. Although not as fine and white as Ko Samet's shores, I certainly feel that the ... read more

Greetings from the tropical island of Langkawi in the very north-west of Malaysia! Our last day in the Cameron Highlands consisted of very little owing to a severe lack of sleep the night before. Mosquitoes invaded our room at the Cameronian Inn and poor Glynn came off the worst with in excess of 20 bites covering his body, 5 of which were on his face alone. I was a little luckier bite-wise with only about 6 or 7 to call my own but neither of us slept all night. Needless to say that the notion of a jungle walk to end our time in the mountains wasn't a wise one. We were both grumpy and irritable and to top it off, we had run out of afterbite! The Cameronian Inn will go down as one of ... read more
