Well we decided to do yet another jungle trek. This one was a lot harder. I think its more to do with the humidity and a lot more walking on rough terrain. We were in a group of 11 this time with 2 tour guides. We stopped off at a cave half way and went in it was full of bats pretty amazing and VERY smelly. On the way we saw a tiger print which was from the day before but didnt see any tigers! WE got to the camp at about 5ish. Well i say camp it was another cave. Lit a fire and 3 hours later had tea! WE had a roll mat to sllep on. I actually slept quite well considering i was on the end and there were apparently rats and bats ... read more

I moved this from my previous website.....it belongs here more than there. This trip took place around September/October 2006.....but has been posted in July 2008. It was originally posted as separate blogs, but i've put them all together for your viewing pleasure. Malaysia 2006 Bangsar Besar (city big) Day of Arrival Salamat Pagi from Malaysia!!! Well, we have arrived! Yesterday morning was interesting, I woke up at 5am and just knew there would be no point in actually attempting to go to sleep again....I woke up thinking 'I'm going to be in Malaysia tonight' - and that was a brilliant thought to start the day. I packed as little as i have ever packed before and yet i still managed to have a suitcase that weighs 12 kilos. A girl's gotta be prepared ya? And speaking ... read more

Scott writes: Fresh from our 5 hour coach and minibus jaunt east across the country we arrive in Semporna around lunchtime in the sweltering heat. Semporna is the jump off town to a host of idlyic islands that boast world class diving and Pulau Sipidan being the piece de resisdence of them all. Apart from the chance to experience the diving there really isn't anything else to do or see in the town, which in itself, is a complete dive! However, the town does have a nice fruit and fish market but come on, you can't go walking around them for days going oohh what a lovely bunch of bananas and look at the size of those melons. I mean you can't can you. Although there was a certain festiveness about the people as it was ... read more

WEll we left Jerantut and got to national park. I took a while as we got a bus and then a boat. ON the boat we met a couple (irish and spaninsh) who studied in Plmyouth!! We went for a walk and saw snake, massive lizard thing, and a cool pheasant thing. Sorry not exactly sure what they were. Went over on the canopy walk which was fun a very rickety. It was soooooo humid in the jungle. We went to find a pool sign posted and found a nice spot by the river which was so cool juct what we needed. In the evening we went for a jungle walk and saw some stange insects, scorpian but not much else.... read more

I have officially fallen in love with the dirty, smelly, corrupted, beautiful country and it's beautiful people. Borneo is absolutely everything I imagined it would be, and more. From the villages to the markets, the Jungle to the ocean; it all has such life and vivality (is that a word?) to it. Every time I look out a window or down a street there is something there that amazes me and fills me with awe. Mostly I love the people here. They are always greeting me with a smile and a hello, and are more willing to laugh and smile than anyone I know back home. They seem to have a zest for life that is unparalleled back home. And considering that compared to western standards these people have so little, it is quite amazing. Maybe ... read more

It might sound a bit illogical, going back to the place where we started our Malaysia-Singapore tour, but given the flight prices from Singapore this was the most economic way to go.. So there we went, back to KL. Given our difficulties with getting a hostel in Singapore and finding a bus to KL, we decided not to let us get surprised by the holiday craziness again, so we booked our hostel beforehand. Actually we wanted to stay in Chinatown this time, instead of the happening Golden Triangle, where all the nice bars, restaurants, shops, sights etc are, and thus which is pretty expensive. However, our hostel owner in Singapore advised us to stay in the Golden Triangle area anyway. We ended up finding an okay offer which gave us one night free and thus lowered ... read more

Mel and I are just back from our 2-day climb of Mount Kinabalu - the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, 4,100m high. SO SO hard, oh my god. All I can say is that I am in absolute AGONY. I have never experienced bodily pain like this and it was the most physically challenging thing I have ever done in my life, and I honestly struggled every single step of the way. The first day began at 8am, and involved a 6-hour uphill climb to a resthouse up the mountain. 6-hours may not seem long but it was literally steep uphill ALL the way - it was unrelenting and the altitudes meant we were contantly out of breath and lightheaded and every step was a massive effort for me. Luckily we had a great guide who ... read more

Yesterday was a relatively uneventful day as we just stayed in for most of the day to save a bit of cash. We did venture as far as the supermarket but got utterly drenched on the way back. It was light and dry when we arrived but by the time we left, it had been raining for a while and all the streets were waterlogged. Despite having umbrellas with us (God bless my Hello Kitty brolly!), we couldn't see the puddles in the road and our feet were soaking wet by the time we made it back to the hostel. We both felt a bit miserable after that, I can tell you! Today, we made up for not having been out much yesterday and boy did we walk a long, long way. We had spotted an ... read more

Well it was a bit of a mision today. Tried to make our own way to National Park. We went to 3 bus stations in KL before we manged to get bus to Jerantut. When we did find one it didnt leave for 3 hours! So we went to find an art museum which was close by to find that was closed! Got the bus which took about 3 hours to Jerantut where we planned to sort out a trek toTaman Negara. Found a nice hostel but the town was abit like a ghost town. Sorted the bus and boat to National Park and will book rest tomorrow as we need to find more people to do trek as it will be very expensive otherwise. ... read more

The hostel we stayed in was a bit like a cell with no windows or light, so didnt wake up until 11.30. Whoops. Headed to KL tower which is the 4th highest telecommunications tower. Its 405 m tall and we got to go to 380 m and have a look. Didnt really help my ears much but it was cool. Then went to try and go up Petronas towers. Had a look round the shopping mall under neath but it was a bit to posh for us we were very out of place!! Couldnt go up towers so just looked from below. Headed back to hostel. Went to lokk round China Town but it was a bit hectic and we were not rerally in the mood to buy bags, watches etc etc. Headed back to hostel. ... read more
