When I arrived in Tanah Rata I only intended to stay for a day. It was a relief to escape the heat and bustle of KL, but the higher the bus weaved into the mountains, the darker the clouds loomed. I barely had time to run for shelter before the skies opened up and the rain began to pour. Cold, wet and tired, there was little to convince me to stay beyond the obligatory mountain hike and tea plantation photo shoot. The next day I braved the mud and the rain to tackle the mossy forrest obstacle course - crawling through tangled branches and wading through liquid mud. My only consolation was that the others seemed to be enjoying the climb just as much as I was, and by the end we had mud caked shoes ... read more

Back from the wilderness and straight to Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur. On arrival we booked into a pretty claustrophobic, but friendly guesthouse in the Chinatown area and to be honest we were feeling a bit like we'd been thrust back into Bangkok, surrounded by hawkers and touts, bombarded by the sound of motorbikes and buses (frequently backfiring!). But as we are begining to discover, first impressions are always misleading when travelling - just two stops away on the LRT (KL's answer to Tokyo's advanced subway system) lies the glittering KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre). Here's the modern heart of KL, skyscrapers and landscaped parks, from which the Petronas Twin Towers rise - Malaysia's 'vision realised' as the promotional video calls it! As we leant from our visit to the 'skybridge' which connects the two towers, ... read more

For the past few days we've been residing in Kuala Lumpur. We caught a flight to KL from Chiang Mai with Air Asia. Air Asia, reputedly the Ryanair of Asia, offered an impressive service but also with a sense of humour. One of the air stewards, hilariously tried to flog off the tasty onboard meals. We were politely offered umbrellas, to protect us from the welcoming rain, as we walked to the terminal. Hope Michael O'Leary is taking note. Our air coach was very modern as we boomed along the 4 lane express highways. Malaysia is the most modern country we've visited in Asia and the transport facilities are excellent. Easy access is aided by modern trains, monorails and state of the art train-stations. It's difficult for me to describe our feelings for the city, maybe ... read more

This morning we had a lazy start before getting breakkie. Breakfast (Cereals & Toast) are all complimentary at this hostel, which makes life nice and easy! After breakfast we went for a wander through the Financial District and the trendy Street - Jalan Bukit Bintang. We checked that Hertz were cool with the car, and then wandered round to the base of the Petronas Towers. The Towers are awesome, but considering they are the 2nd tallest building in the world don't actually look that high. Maybe we have seen so many huge buildings now having done the CN Tower, Empire State and IFC2 we just don't appreciate them as much as we should! We had a wander to the Tourist Info office - it was a good opportunity to get some trips booked up for this ... read more

Well Hello to everyone, we have finally arrived and touched down in Asia. Sorry for the delay in updating my travelblog, as you canall appreaciate we have been busy exploring the place and drinking tiger beer till the early hours of the morning. I know that is no excuse but i'm using it anyway. So anyway let us fill you in on what we've been up too! While i am on the subject of excuses i will appoligise now for my spelling and grammar over the following journals you will read, as it was never my greatest subject. We flew into Singapore at 18.00 friday to an overcast and humid afternoon when you walked out the airport it was like someone throwing a bucket of warm water at you. After the 12 and a half hour ... read more

So up with an English Breakfast at the Lakehouse (well it would have been rude not too!) Then departed for the long drive to KL. We took a quick detour to the BOH Tea Plantation, about 2000ft up into the Highlands, which was heading up the mountains even further then we were already and out of our way, but had heard good things about the place. Well what can we say... the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen in my life, words can not explain. We also saw plenty of people belonging to the Orang Asli Tribe - the indigenous people of Malaysia who live in the mountains. They literally still hunt with blow pipes and catapults. Their homes were just shacks hanging on the hillsides. After driving through (almost) jungle the day before, we ... read more

Hello... Before we begin we suggest getting a nice hot brew before settling down to read as we have a lot of catching up to do! Also, we have updated our blog with some photos. Unfortunately my downloaded disc has been put on DVD and I cant access my photos so the 'dirty' ones (ANNA!) like the sand in our teeth will have to wait a while : ( I've taken the best from Maz's bunch so enjoy! xx The train journey from Singapore to KL station took about 6 hours (but we did get to see Harry Potter on the train! ) Originally we were going to stay in China town but the tourist info lady advised us to stay in the 'Golden Triangle'. The taxi dropped us off at JL Bukit Bintag road where ... read more

After waking up at a modest hour (after the night before!) we headed down to pick up our hire car for the next few days... not much to shout about, it was an automatic, gold Proton Wira with no acceleration, such a monster to drive. Bearing in mind Dan can barely fit in it Clare has become the designated driver for the tour. Dodging the suicide motor bikes around George Town we headed over one of the longest bridges in the world to the mainland and in to Malaysia itself- expertly navigated by Dan - not getting lost once. After a 4 hour drive consisting of both modern motorways followed by very tight mountainous roads littered again with suicide bikers and coaches we arrived in the Cameron Highlands! Our accomodation in the CH is The Lakehouse, ... read more

As i wont get on the motorbikes here we hired a car for the day which cost 4 pounds! It was really nice to drive too. We went on a cable car and the views were amazing. Went to see a watefall, had to have a massive walk and when we got there it was actually quite disappointing! Then went to the highest point on the island and there is a police staion there and you can only see from one side which isnt such an amazing view. Seemed a bit strange that they had done that. Went to one of the beaches for a picnic then to the main town to the shopping centre. ... read more
