After leaving Cameron Highlands at 9am, we arrived in Kuala Tahan, Taman Negara National Park at 5pm. It was a long mini bus ride but worth it to see the scenery. We arrived at Kuala Tahan and saw that it was nothing more than a street with some hostels/guesthouses overlooking floating restaurants on the Tembeling river. It was low season and hardly anyone around. It was hard to find people to do activities and is why we were only able to do a 4hour hike and the canopy walkway. Halfway through our tour, our guide finds a leech and shows everyone what it looks like and goes on to explain about the foot long leech in Malaysia. But not to worry it only feeds on the metre long earthworm in Borneo he reassures us. Everything's bigger ... read more

Ok, ok, ok, I have from enough of you to know I am way overdue to get out another blast. J I have been keeping myself so busy and full of activities, it has been a bit difficult to get to the internet cafés to send out a blast. I finally wrote one on a bus journey the other day and am now sending it on to all y'all. Hope you are enjoying the journey thus far - you can all rest assured, I surely am!! I last left y'all when I was on Koh Phi Phi. I didn't stay on the island as long as I had originally intended, but enjoyed my time there, nonetheless. I left with the intention of island-hopping my way to Malaysia, but the reality of it all was that I ... read more

Having not being able to buy or carry much over the last 9.5months as we travelled, now that we are getting to the end of the trip it is time to shop! With the knowledge that our last few days will be in Bangkok to pick up a few last minute bargains we had decided to head south to KL and Singapore to begin the shopping mission. Getting a room in KL proved trickier than last time we were here as prices have gone up significantly since then, and everything is much more pricy than we had experienced in Penang. We wanted to stay fairly centrally so that we could walk to and from all the areas we had planned to visit for our shopping and just places we had enjoyed visiting last time. Our room ... read more

The six of us left Tanah Rata together, a band of travelers who had formed some bond over beer and idle dorm room gossip in the days leading up to departure. Each had time to kill and enough spontaneity to head in the direction of the unknown. Someone pointed on the map, the others nodded in agreement and so the Pangkor Plan was formed. The next few days were a blur of sun worship, sunburn, sunstroke, many rounds of vodka and inedible food. The mosquitoes feasted, jellyfish stung, and everyone suffered sea rock cuts and grazes that all seemed to require (according to the boys) immediate nursing attention. Outside was hot, the water was cold, the AC was freezing and a particular size of towel/hot pants were altogether way too small! All that aside however, there ... read more

We flew Air Asia to get down to Hat Yai in the deep south of Thailand. The flight was delayed for two hours due to some problems with the generation of cabin pressure. Once underway, the pilot kept slowing the plane as much as he could and then putting on a rapid burst of speed as if trying to kick start a motor somewhere. This was a bit unnerving. Looking out of the window the ground speed seemed to grind towards zero, and I found myself wondering about stall speeds and gliding capabilities of this ageing jet. We landed at Hat Yai airport with only a temporary group psychosis to overcome and went directly to Songkhla on the eastern coast, where we booked into a plush hotel. Songkhla turned out to be a bit dreary despite ... read more

It was a lazy morning this morning, did a bit of clothes cleaning and chores, after which we headed out to the train station to purchase our ticket to Singapore as we depart tomorrow. We had a walk around the Main Square (Merdeka Square) where England handed back the country to the Malay people in 1957. The Square now hosts the largest flag pole in the world (wow I hear you all say!) We also walked around the old Station which is a beautiful Moorish style building, and the main City Mosque's and then went off for a spot of lunch. After lunch we started our next adventure... we were collected once again from the hostel by the tourist board guys, this time heading off to Fort Altingsburg about 1.5 hours outside of the city to ... read more

So from Thailand we busted over the border with our sneaky bananas to Malaysia. Right away all our memories came flooding back and, despite a few changes, the place looked pretty much the same. We quickly found ourselves a bed and set out in search of the food Penang is so famous for. We didn't have to look far. In fact the only way to avoid the fantastic food of Penang was to stay in our room, and that wasn't something we were up for so there was a lot of eating fitted into our few precious hours in town. We started with the classic Hainese Chicken Rice, and our plate was deemed by Corb to be the best he'd tasted. Hard to beat such a strong first meal, we had some mighty fine curry mee, ... read more

At the KL bus station we grabbed traditional Malay breakfast which is basically spring rolls, sweet pancakes, sweet cakes, rice in banana leaves etc - all which is very lovely and tasty! The bus is very basic and we experienced the rudeness again with everyone pushing infront of everyone, even the little old nun was pushed out the way! tut tut! The journey took 4ish hours on very windy roads which started to make me a bit nauseas but proudly I stayed strong! At the bus station in Cameron Highlands there were lots of touts waiting for us and as we were hungry and tired we went with the man who seemed the nicest and had the best sounding leaflet called Daniels lodge. Its very basic but has interent and organises tours and very good location ... read more

Today has been an absolutely awesome day. We had booked on some trips yesterday with the Tourist Office but as this week is really quiet here in Malaysia (Asian schools break for half term next week) we ended up being the only people who had booked in all of KL! They therefore sent us a chauffeur and he drove us all over the place to check out some sights. This morning he took us to Batu Caves. The Batu Caves are situated thirteen kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur. They are the sacred place for the Hindu's in Malaysia. They consist of three main caves and a number of smaller ones. The caves are made of limestone and are home to loads of small cynomolgus monkeys. Annoyingly the entrance to the caves involves climbing 276 steps - ... read more

We finally decided that we we're ready to go out on adventures. We teamed up with Vincent (The guy that runs the hostel) and an Englishman called Jason and a German couple. The plan was to go and see Proboscis monkeys (they only live on Borneo), fish for tiger prawns, ride water buffalos and go python hunting. The plans were of course quite lose, since you will have to rely on different things. We headed off at 2 pm on Saturday south in a good mood. After about two hours we arrived at our place to stay, the longhouse in the pictures. It is situated by a river where the Proboscis live. There were a lot of chinese tourists there when we arrived and they were quite loud. We took it easy and when night came ... read more
