Mat: After two amazing weeks we finally have time for some communication (we are in Kuta Kinabalu again). Luckily enough we have not had much time to spend in internet cafes, and in fact have been away from any computers for most of the time. This is the first of three blogs to explain what we have been up to in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo: 1) The Kinabatangan river, 2) Diving around the world famous Sipadan Island, and 3) Climbing the 4095m Mount Kinabalu (I am happy to be sitting in front of a computer because my legs are cripped after 2 days of going straight up, then straight down). That said, I have just spent a while loading photos because I think they speak loader than words about the wildlife we saw in the jungle near ... read more

Kuala Lumpar was interesting but I felt Id had enough city mayhem, it was time to get immersed in the worlds oldest rainforest (Taman negara). We found ourselves sat in long boat, speeding up the Tembling River (great name) surrounded by beautiful lush tropical forest as we cruised into the depths of the jungle. We stayed on the river in a disgusting dorm where in order to shower you had to stand over the hole in the floor/ toilet, how pleasant! But the views overlooking the national park, the floating restaurants and sounds of the jungle made up for it. On our first night we went on an organised night jungle treck. With our torches we stumbled around spotting creatures of the night. When I looked down at my feet I realised large turmites were heading ... read more

Hello Everyone. This is just a quick update of our adventures so far as we are leaving Kuala Lumpur tomorrow to go to a rain forest for three days. On Monday we went to a sea food restaurant to celebrate Mark and Charlie's birthdays this is the type of place where point and ask them to cook it or to put it another we all stood there with our mouths open and Mark ordered some of these some of them we did not know what they were but one things for sure King Prawns are ugly looking things they look a little bit like a spine. They were at least 10 inches long and no there were no jokes about it. When it arrived the table was filled with crab, clams, shell fish, huge king prawns, ... read more

Living in Sarawak is sometimes like having one vacation after another...that's because it being the largest state in Malaysia, not only are there more ethnic groups here (over 27..i believe)...but the fact that all races and ethnic people look forward to celebrating their own festivals especially when the latter are government-gazetted public holidays as well. Well, folks..this year,Malaysian Muslims celebrated Hari Raya ( new year ) even earlier.after the sighting of the new moon on 23rd October after a month of fasting. ( Deepavali fell the previous Saturday and Monday was declared extra public holiday ) As usual, there were many ópen-houses' where friends, visitors and strangers were most welcome to drop in for goodwill wishes, greetings and food (!!!). The first two days passed quietly for me, but on the third day, I visited Hayati ... read more

Hello Hello... After the long bus trips in South America a little 12 hour flight to Kuala Lumpur seemed pretty short!! After arriving we had to get another plane up to Langkawi. A little 45 minute flight on Malaysia’s cheap airline - AirAsia. I can't believe how easy it is to get around here. The cheap airline was only about 25 pounds return... At Langkawi we made our way to our luxury hostel. Well the only other accommodation near ours were 4-star resorts…. So we could pretend. Our hostel was rather a long way from luxury… but it was nice - it even had it's own resident monkey. Then we basically spent the next few days lazing around on the beach. Lovely lazy days. It was soooo hot though… so we ended up swimming all the ... read more

This place was genius. We were amazed how posh and built up the place was considering it was on top of a mountain. We checked into the First World hotel which is renowned for being the first ever hotel built with 6,000 rooms. It was brightly coloured and had an indoor and outdoor theme park. These were mostly aimed at kids but there was plenty to do and see. We were on the 19th floor and the views from our room were astonishing, especially considering we were above cloud level. We booked tickets for the Mysteria magic show which was pretty impressive and Jo was was amazed when they replaced a girl with a white tiger on stage. We also checked out the casino and nightclub but all got quite expensive! The next day we took ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang November 22nd 2006

Crazy travel from KL to Penang today. It took us a taxi, train, hell bus, airplane and cab to get here but overall pretty smooth. We flew AirAsia today which is a low cost carrier over here (like EasyJet and RyanAir in Europe and like Southwest at home but 1/10th the price.) The total cost of our tickets was $40 for both so it made up for the travel hassles including using a different terminal than all other flights out of KL. Penang is a bit of a contrast to KL. You can see water, you can see jungle, and there is a very interesting architecture juxtaposition between the new high rises and the old colonial British (East India Trading Company) buildings that are definitely showing their years amongst others undergoing wonderful restoration. We checked out ... read more

Mat: We are in Kuta Kinabalu. Its muggy. Muggy muggy. As you would expect it to be in the tropics. Probably exaggerated for us because the last couple of weeks in New Plymouth and Wellington were so cold, wet and windy. Our plans at the moment are to book the hut halfway up Mt Kinabalu for the 29th, so we can hit the top on the 30th for my 30th. We are waiting for Air Asia to open so we can check out the flights to Sandakan. They only cost $30 or something which means we do not need to take the bus (8 - 12 hours depending on stops according to our hostel host). We are over sitting in one spot for long periods after the flights and hanging about from New Plymouth - Auckland ... read more

We've moved a little further south, approximately a 2 hour bus drive from Kuala Lumpur. The journey from KL was fascinating as we we were located directly behind the coach driver. We heard stories that the Malaysians were wild when it coms to driving, and the journey proved just that theory. We witnessed 3 cars, badly battered, lying in the ditch off the main road. Our fears were compounded by the torrential rain outpours, but the driver didn't seem too concerned as he weaved his way through the traffic. Much to our amusement, the rest of the passengers seemed oblivious and were sound asleep. Our hostel is located in the new part of the city, right beside a supermarket and cinema, where we watched the new Bond film. You can't seem to get normal popcorn over ... read more
