Donning our walking boots again, today we ventured out for a bit of a mammoth trek about town. We started off by picking up an excellent streetmap for 2 Ringgit from the Tourist Information Office and then took a closer look at the gaudy pinkness of the town square. In the centre of the little square is an obelisk mounted in a water fountain and it's by this fountain that you can find a couple of locals hanging around an old handsome cab. Not the most obvious place to keep a couple of massive boa constrictors and a fully grown iguana you might think but that's exactly what the pair of rather shady looking blokes were touting - a chance to have a photo with one of these great beasts. Pay 5 RM and you get ... read more

It seems I have been neglecting my duties of late and haven't been blogged for a few days now (shame on me) so it's update time again - hooray! We're still in the delightfully laid-back city of Melaka in south Malaysia where we've been doing rather a lot of two things: sleeping and walking (though thankfully not at the same time). At first glance, Melaka seems like a pretty compact sort of place and on our first full day out, we felt like we had covered a lot of ground. We started off at midday with a late and overpriced breakfast in the Fair Haven Cafe, although it was our own fault we ended up paying too much. Instead of opting for one of the set breakfasts, I fancied scrambled eggs on toast and Glynn decided ... read more

After cleverly choosing to leave Semporna on Hari Raya, the holiday equivalent of Christmas Day, we managed to get out to Sepilok after lots of negotiating with rickety minivans and arrived hot, sweaty and tired in the lush jungle surroundings of Sepilok, staying at the little hostel lodge where we were the only guests! Was like our own private jungle retreat (complete with mosquitos and red ants), which was cool. Spent an evening relaxing, enjoying the jungle sounds and getting eaten alive by mosquitos then the next day went to the Sepilok Orang Utan sanctuary to see the adorable animals. Unfortunately, the main part of the sanctuary had blown down in strong winds a few days before, so most of the viewing areas and jungle walks were closed, so we could only see the baby orang ... read more

Hello again! In answer to the age old question 'where are they now?' I can confirm the answer today is: Melaka. After a very quiet, chilled out 8 days in Kuala Lumpur, we hopped on a melaka-bound bus today and made the shorter than usual journey of just 2 hours. We're staying in a nice place called Traveller's Lodge and we know it's nice because we took some time to check out a neighbouring hostel, which turned out to be a bit grim and made us appreciate what a good choice we'd made in the first place! We did, however, downgrade to a smaller room as the one we were originally given had a really hard matress and I couldn't bear the thought of sleeping on that for our long stay here (when we tried to ... read more

The Journey Well, after 45 hours of straight travel I finally made it to the island of Borneo, none the worse for wear. And I must say the whole journey went quite smoothly, unless you count me almost missing my flight from Bangkok to Borneo. Here's the story: A 10 hour bus ride from Princeton, BC to Seattle, WA. Uneventful. A one hour public transit bus ride from Seattle bus station to Sea-Tac airport. Quite eventful if you are a small town girl like me. For city folk I am sure what I saw and heard was normal everyday occurances. 6 hour layover in Sea-Tac where I met Crazy Dave who jumped out of planes for a living (very cool) but who was also drunk drunk drunk and incredibly 'friendly'. Managed to weasle my way out ... read more

So... Malaysia was interesting. But now I'm safe and sound in my little plot of land in Singapore, and I'm liking it a lot better than I have in the past. I don't by any means ever plan on moving here, but it'll do for the next couple months. My classes are turning out to be pretty interesting- well some of them- well one of them. I'm taking a Gender and Sexuality in Japan class which I actually really like. I'm pretty excited to stop in Tokyo for two or three days after the semester is over. What is Singapore like? Right now it has been hazy and grey for about two weeks because Indonesia is burning rainforests over in Java. I have absolutely no idea why they are doing that, but it sounds like a ... read more
