Kat writes: After jigging along on a local bus for an hour we reach our destination Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and it is so worth the journey. A centre, on the edge of protected jungle, where they rehabilitate orphaned Orangutan's with the aid of WWF UK. They teach them everything, even how to climb and then send them back out to the wild. Unfortunately the centre had just suffered a major blow- at the beginning of the month a monsoon totally destroyed their tourist viewing platforms. This is where Orangutans that they have released come back if they want to for food. Some can never fend for themselves and return everyday after their release and some they never see again! Despite the missing platforms people were still turning up, including us, so they opened up ... read more

Kat writes: So we decided to hop on a plane in KL and just over 3 hours later we were here to check out Borneo Malaysia. The place of mystery, full of dense jungle bursting with wildlife including the endangered Bornean Orangutan and the Sumatran Rhinoceros (and if you've ever seen the movie 'Anaconda' - man eating snakes!) Well, it’s not quite 'full' of jungle any more - commerce, logging and palm oil plantations are seeing to that but it is still a beautiful and mysterious country. Sabah's capital We landed in Kota Kinabalu, a Malay lad about our age was sitting next to me on the plane, so we shared a cab with him into town and he gave us the quick low down on the area. Sweet. Kota Kinabalu is the capital of one ... read more

Our last day in Langkawi was car-free so we took it nice and easy for the day with a whole lot of doing not very much at all! We had a long lie-in and when we did finally emerge from our comfy bed, the skies were looking a bit gloomy. We took this as a sign to continue chilling out for the day and it wasn't until dusk that we finally donned a pair of shoes to take our evening stroll along the beach. Much of the debris had been cleared, jellyfish included, and we enjoyed the sensation of feeling the sand between our toes one last time. As we walked, we saw countless crabs scurrying in all directions and honestly I thought we would tread on one at any moment - thankfully all crabs lived ... read more

Been in Malaysia for the last 5 days hanging out with all my relatives and enjoying all the great food! Each day has consisted of at least 4 large meals - trying to pack in time and stomach space for all the foods I've missed and want to eat while I'm here, as well as fitting in catching up with m relatives and of course a bit of shopping! Is really nice to just relax a bit, sleep late and not to be rushing anywhere. Had my birthday party yesterday, joint with my aunty. Had a big meal for 20 of my relatives at a chinese restaurant in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur - we pretty much ate from morning to afternoon, then came back to our house for present opening, cake and tea and just ... read more

Kota Kinabalu or KK as its affectionally known by the locals is on the west side of sabah, borneo. its the capital and is a city but only small compared to liverpool or sydney. we were there for a week and what a week it has been. we touched down after an immence time in the jungle and were looking forward to a nice week of sunning it on the beach. it was raining and the skies were grey due to fires in indonesia. i was slightly gutted to ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Tanah Rata October 16th 2006

After 6 days on the Perhentians, it was time to go somewhere with a bit less sun.. The Cameron Highlands! We went there by a surprisingly comfortable minibus we only had to share with a Dutch couple we had met on the island and arrived a bit later in the afternoon. There we would immediately notice the weather was indeed a bit more chilly and rainy, as we had already expected. Our original plan was to stay there for a bit more than 2 days, but already on our first evening we discovered the things we really wanted to see and do wouldn't necessarily take more than one day. And since we could use the time well for the remainder of our travel plan, we decided to leave a day earlier. Tanah Rata, the city we ... read more

I'm sure there's a great quote for it but I can't find the perfect one yet. Essentially what contributed to more than half of this trip being as enjoyable as it was-hands down, the company. Michael (another international student that lives on my floor) and I caught an evening flight to Kota Kinabalu (KK) on Tuesday. Before my trip I had phoned a friend back home, who'd spent some time in Malaysia, for advice varying from what to do and where to stay. She told me all that I asked and more but what we hadn't predicted became fates way of connecting us to an unforgettable experience. Before we left for our trip we didn't exchange any currency since we planned on withdrawing Ringits (the local currency) at the airport. Upon arrival, we found that the ... read more

Had an awesome time today at the Orangutan Rehab centre and the crocodile farm. There were literlally thousands of crocs at the farm and they were fighting at feeding time. I wish I got the first fight on video as one croc hit the support post, where we were standing above,so hard that he was bleeding. I shit myself as the whole supprt structure was shacking and made only of crappy wood. I've got some great video footage that I'll keep for ever. Check out the photos!... read more

Kat writes: So up nice and early we catch a bus in Singapore at 6.30am (my dad would be proud!) to take us back into Malaysia. The border crossing this time was very different. Unlike Singapore's huge modern border control, the Malaysia one was a little string of what looked like a row of down trodden shops. I thought I had taken a trip down Shirley High Street in Southampton by accident! Surprising actually as Malaysia is a relatively prosperous country compared to some of its neighbours. People are less interested in giving us the hard sell and many can speak at least some English, getting chatting to the locals is easy. They really are a friendly bunch. Back in Malaysia we start travel up the east coast. It is much less built up than the ... read more
