Monday 4th July Last time we left you we were jumping off the coach in KL Central Bus Station after a smooth 2 hour journey from Melaka. We managed to walk to the Train Station, jump off at the right stops and navigate our way to the hostel with no real problem. Now I'm not bragging but I reckon were getting pretty good at this public transport malarky, sometimes stressfull but mega cheap! We arrived at Arenna Mountbatten Hotel which I'd booked in a hurry the night before in Melaka. It was brand new so I thought we'd give it a bash at £9per night each. I'd made arrangements for 4 nights in a Superior Twin Room but after lot of confusion with the receptionist we arrived in our room to find a double suite.....lovey jubly ... read more

We arrived in Malaysia excited to be in another country and soon felt at ease in what was certainly a more 'western' and multicultural society than Vietnam. KL's low-cost terminal was pretty easy to navigate and we toasted our arrival with a giant McDonald's meal (yeah baby). Our hostel, the Matahari Lodge, was basic but in a great location for the money round the corner from Petaling Street where the Chinese night market delights every evening. What a market it was with just a little bit of encouragement from vendors selling their wares. We soaked up the atmosphere with a beer and some good street food. I knew I was going to like this place. During our time in KL we explored the delights of Little India and Chinatown, did some shopping (well it was obligatory ... read more

One day in Byron I did a bit of body surfing in the day and then walked up to the lighthouse for the sunset that evening which was amazing! From the lighthouse we saw about 8 whales and at one point 4 dolphins swimming with a whale. The next day I went for a bit of a surf in the afternoon, the surf was really small but the amazing thing is, however small the waves were they still barrel. Went out for my last night in Byron that night which was a good laugh. The next morning I caught a bus up to Surfers Paradise to meet my mate Craig from back home which was pretty sweet. Had a few amazing nights out there and chilled out on the beach for a fair bit. I liked ... read more

Friday - we walked miles in the heat to find a gallery suposedly displaying the work of local artists - only to find it was not fully set up, had very limited work on display and wasn't really that interesting! Ah, well, we tried. The art has been very disappointing in Borneo to the point of almost being non-existant. However, we walked back a different way and came across a shop selling clocks with arabic numbers on - and we got the deal we wanted! So I'm happy, just have to lug a wall clock around for a while now...............! We ate at the Hong Kong Noodle House again as it's been great food, and naturally finished with a cold Tiger at the local eatery! Saturday - a lazy morning really then after checking out of ... read more

It was an early start from home, still dark and cold. I drove my car to Coolangatta Airport with Lyn (my sister and my usual and sorely missed travel companion) who had smartly spent the night due to the necessity of our early rise this morning. Cobi and Tammy (my sister and niece and farewell party) were already at the airport when we arrived, We had some airport breakfast after checking in my bag which was 1kg over the allowed 15kg but was waved on. Good start!. Flight Gold Coast to Kuala Lumpur 8 hours 10 minutes! The annoying woman sitting next to me spent more money on in flight food and drinks than I paid for my flight - which was not that cheap at Aud$400. Then of course she had the need to wake ... read more

Kuala Lumpur I think thats the last time we’ll ever settle for seating on an overnight train. As it turns out, Malaysian trains like to play movies, adverts and information videos with music all night long with sound. The aircon is also pretty cold. Luckily everything was on time and clearing Malaysian immigration was just a case of getting off the train, walking through a little airport style immigration desk and getting back on the train. Me and Terry both tried to sleep but gave up by 01:30 and decided watching the A Team was far more enjoyable. Two episodes later and we did manage 2 and a half hours very uncomfortable sleep. When we got into Kuala Lumpar station at 06:30, I spotted a drinks machine where cans of coca cola are RM1, that’s 20p! ... read more

So Singapore became my stomping ground for 5 days. Despite the man in my room that snored like a bear and considered 16 an acceptable temperature for air con my time there was a lot of fun. Being away from Alice turned me into a Singapore whore, I tried to cover as much ground as humanly possible in those 5 days; left me with the following list of achievements: Chinatown twice, Little India every day (where I lived), Arab Street, Clarke Quay, Marina Bay, Sentosa twice, 3 large shopping centres, the botanical gardens, zoo, night safari, Fort Canning park... It really was an amazing place, despite the numerous things you can't do, there was so much to do... it was just a tad out of my price range. That said watching the Champions League final at ... read more

Kuala lumpur was an enjoyable two hour flight from koh samui onboard fireflies twin prop aircraft, which in Emilies eyes was obviously going to crash as you could see the propellors and they made a lot of noise! Once safely on the Tarmac in KL (please excuse the abreviation as it sounds so pompous to me but aids the speed in which I can type this blog and everyone I speak to seems to use it) we got talking to a fellow backpacking Brit and decided to save a few ringets and share a cab into the city. We headed to the cultural mecca found in the centre of every city and ordered our happy meals to justify using the very helpful free wifi all Mcdonalds now offer. Very helpful as I was able to call ... read more

We left Krabi at lunch time and unfortunately our flight was delayed, nonetheless we arrived in KL just as it was getting dark. We flew Air Asia and you come into the LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) it astonished me that we are so lucky in Europe to be able to cross borders without issue. We were in the immigration queue with Air Asia staff from Indonesia, imagine having to go through that every day?! We caught the bus to KL Sentral and then hopped on the Monorail to Chinatown, the only place that we envisaged being able to afford a hotel. China town certainly didn't disappoint, it was just a minging as China and smelt the same. We had seen a hostel in the book so we went there, the book said that the owner ... read more

We can't believe we've been in Malaysia for 2 weeks - we've done so much! We are actually in Borneo now so I thought I'd update the blog before we had too many adventures here. The speedboat across to Pulau Langkawi from Thailand was great, we got an actual seat and it was on time. Langkawi is known for its beautiful beaches but as we were only staying for two nights we stayed in the town called Kuah which is near the jetty. We'd had a lot of the beaches so we decided to do something different and visit Underwater World. It was really fun! It's Malaysia's largest aqaurium featuring 200 different species of marine and freshwater creatures. There was even a talking parrot! Our favourites were the turtles and the rockhopper penguins. We watched the ... read more
