We arrived in Sao Palo and passed through immigration quite easily. They have a very organised taxi system to get into town so you give the hotel name to the lady at the desk, then pre-pay for the taxi by credit card, hand the receipt to the driver and then you are on your way. The hotel did get good reviews, unfortunately when we looked at it the day before it did not get such good reviews. They were doing some work and although this did not affect us the area was pretty interesting in the streets around the hotel. We got them to order us pizza on the first night as it was late, we were a bit nervous about wandering around the first time in the dark and also we were tired having spent ... read more

Caro: The flight to Bogota was fine; we must hold the record for having spent the most time in Lima airport in a week. We were picked up and taken to our fairly average hotel. I say this because the previous places that we have stayed have been really lovely in the past few weeks. I booked it so it was my fault! Anyway we planned to head out for some dinner and we had a couple of places in mind. It was about 7pm by the time we arrived and when we asked where one of the restaurants was located we were told that it would shut at 9pm. It was actually about 2 blocks from the hotel but the guy on the reception had to call about 10 people to find this out. We ... read more

Joff: We arrived in Equador after a brief stopover in Lima. Having been only told what a dive Lima is by everyone we decided just to have one night there and then head on to Quito. The hotel in Lima was fine and had a decent TV so considering we were practically under house arrest due to the dodgy nature of the neighbourhood in which we stayed this was a good thing. We woke early had breakfast and excitedly boarded the flight to Quito. Quito was a somewhat later addition to our travels but we decided that as it broke up the journey to Colombia and contained the cheesiest tourist attraction (the equator) it became a must! We landed and were met by a guy called Paco who was the husband of the Elena who ran ... read more

Caro: So after picking up the cold, I seemed to pick up some kind of bug and instead of joining the girls that we had just met (Ros who Joff knew from home and her friends) I had to leave before dinner because I felt so unwell. By the Sunday I was feeling a bit better but we had a 12 hour bus journey to endure. Joff had eaten a box of Jalapeno flavoured Pringles so was really pleasant to sit next to for the journey, this was to be the least of my issues. We had been told that the bus was direct to Cusco but on arrival at the bus station the bus said Puno, we were assured ´fine fine´ and told to board. Luckily the guy who was dealing with the border crossing ... read more

Caro: Our last night in Salta was one of indulgence, some nice steak, red wine and a pizza. I am glad that we did indulge to be honest as we had no idea of what was to come. I boarded the bus wearing (as you can see on the pics of the previous blog) flip flops, leggings and a dress. I had my fleece, a cardigan and a pair of socks in my bag, just in case it got a bit cold overnight. I was getting some bizarre looks at the bus station but this didn´t surprise me; people tend to stare at you when you have light coloured eyes and white skin. The men in Argentina also stare quite blatantly and comment quite a lot, it is probably just as well I don´t really understand ... read more

Joff: We woke early and headed to Anta car hire to collect our Ford Ka "Hilda" we decided that it should have a Spanish name and as it was ridiculously small it had to be a girl. Having been through all the checks paid our cash and fitted 1 bag into the boot we left the sanctuary of the garage and headed out into the busy streets of Salta. In spite of being early everyone and his dog seemed to be out shopping or for a drive so I was sweating before we came to the first real junction. In spite of the chaos we made it out of town and towards Cachi. When we had been told that the scenery would be spectucular and that we would have to drive at 30kmph as the roads ... read more

We arrived in Puerto Iguazu having spent 17 hours on the overnight bus with a woman who seemed to talk without even drawing breath for the duration! In spite of this we managed to get some sleep and arrived feeling pretty fresh! We found the hostel in Puerto Iguazu without any problems, we had booked in advance and had a nice room in the Pop hostel which was close to town. In spite of being called Pop it was not young and trendy and seemed to be filled with couples and families so partying would be limited! It was warm, no actually hot, which was something of a novelty after the last few weeks. We got into our room right away which was a bonus and gave us the opportunity to ditch our bags and go ... read more

We found our hotel pretty easily in BA and after dumping our bags headed to the Spanish school to enrol. We had been in touch with them over email (having realised that we we certainly in need of some assistance on the lingo front) but wanted to find out where it was and what was the easiest way of travelling to it so that we knew for Monday. Having felt a bit jaded after the bus it was good to take a stroll and get our bearings! The hotel was fine and being cheaper than a lot of the hostels we were pleased to find that we were in the Palermo area close to the Subte (underground) and close to lots of reasonably priced steak houses and bars. We enrolled in the school, had a quick ... read more

Caro; We arrived in Mendoza in the afternoon. The bus journeys had been fine so far in South America and unlike SE Asia the buses seem pretty reliable. This will likely change as we head into Bolivia and Peru but for now we have been pleasantly surprised. We had chosen the hostel because it was cheap and it said "Free wine" on the website. We are very easily pleased granted but when we arrived the chap on the desk was extremely helpful and our room was clean and cosey. I had expected all of the men in Argentina to look like Maradonna, I was in fact correct, they all look like a younger or older version of the infamous "God" with the magic hand. Fortunately, not that many men look like Carlos Tevez, he has that ... read more

Joff: We arrived in Santiago before dawn following a 13 hour flight which involved a stop in Lima to pick up a dog on the way. The flight was pretty good and we had tons of space. Although contary to EU airline law it would seem that in South America you are allowed to have a dog in the cabin for the flight, sat on your lap, which we both found most amusing! Having cleared customs far more easily than in the US, in spite of the aforementioned dog having relieved itself in the queue... we decided that we would probably need to kill some time so had a coffee at the airport and realised that we literally speak no Spanish, having been harangued by nearly every taxi driver in the terminal and yet still not ... read more
