Monday 4th July
Last time we left you we were jumping off the coach in KL Central Bus Station after a smooth 2 hour journey from Melaka. We managed to walk to the Train Station, jump off at the right stops and navigate our way to the hostel with no real problem. Now I'm not bragging but I reckon were getting pretty good at this public transport malarky, sometimes stressfull but mega cheap! We arrived at Arenna Mountbatten Hotel which I'd booked in a hurry the night before in Melaka. It was brand new so I thought we'd give it a bash at £9per night each. I'd made arrangements for 4 nights in a Superior Twin Room but after lot of confusion with the receptionist we arrived in our room to find a double suite.....lovey jubly so I wasn't prepred to mention anything more to the hotel staff, plus the shower was amazing...best I've ever had, EVER!!! And I'm pretty sure it's going to be our last of such luxuries for 6 months so i'm planning on making the most of it!
It was late afternoon once we were ready, so we had a quick look at the map
and luck had it the KL Tower & Twin Petronas Towers we fairly close by so it only took about 20 mins in the 35oC heat to walk it. We took the usual post-card snapshots from the front and back of the Petronas Towers but had already agreed we would re-visit another evening for the best night time viewing. So instead we grabed a nice shaded spot under the trees, watched the sun setting and enjoyed the skyline views with the fountain displays providing a cool afternoon mist.
Once we'd been out and enjoyed the cheap local street food; Curry and a coconut - A blooming bargain at £2 each, we called it a night. No sooner had we walked back into the hotel entrance we were advised we had been given the wrong room. We were presented with a choice of staying put for extra money or moving to our orgional bought and paid for accomodation. We decided to move and glad we did. We got bunk beds, the same shower and a bigger room...whoop! I'm sure it's not normal to get that excited at our age and be fighting over the top bunk, but it happened! I
gave in, thinking that in an emergency i'd be first out and heat rises so we'll see how long he lasts! Mwahaha!
Tuesday 5th July
Tuesday arrived and we were up and ready for a full day of sight seeing by the afternoon. We just needed to make a quick pit stop before-hand at the nearest post office to send home a few bits we actually don't need. Hopefully the 4kg we managed to get rid of will lighten the load. I realised whilst looking at the trusty Lonley Planet the majority of attractions were based on the western edge of the city around Lake Gardens, so with a map in hand off we went on foot. First stop was the National Museum Of Malaysia which was actually really enjoyable as far as my attention span for museums go, with interesting info on Malaysia's history, economy, arts, craft and culture. After a few hours wandering round the museum we left and next stumbled upon the Planetarium for 2RM (£1) each which was worth the use of the air con if nothing else. We're both usually really interested in all things space and science but to be honest I
found it totally boring and when a coach loads of kids rocked up I was ready for blast off!
Onwards & upwards and into the Bird park next, which is apparently the worlds largest free-flight walk in aviary and 21 acres of valley terrain. We managed to spend around 2 hours walking around the different zones stopping off for an ice-cream or 2. Did I mention it must have been the hottest day yet and all Scott wanted to do was jump in each puddle & pond we passed... and not just too cool off, but to wash of the after effects of being pebbble dashed on from a great height with great thanks to a parrot! By the time we got round I was totally exhausted, my legs were like Jelly. I just wanted an ice-cold shower and a little nanna nap so we hailed a taxi and headed off back to our bunkbed with luxurious comforts!
We decided we would wait for the sun to set and darkness to fall before venturing out to see the Petronas Twin Towers in all there glory, we were like moths to a flame! And wowweee they were immense! It
was already 10:30pm-ish but was still fairly busy when we got there so we perched ourselves on a set of steps out the front to take in the neck-breaking view and waited around for the crowds to disperse so we could grab a minute to capture some pictures for ourselves.
Wednesday 6th July
After enjoying a lazy lie in till the afternoon and the time it took to apply soothing cream to each itchy crater sized mozzy bite meant we didn't leave for the Batu Caves until late. With hardly any one around we almost had the cave to ourselves apart from the troops of monkeys which greeted us at each step (272 steps to be precise!) to the top hoping for some tasty treats. If I dont come home with calves like a rugby player after these 6 months I'll be amazed! The giant 43 meter buddah statue at the entrance was pretty impressive and the caves themselves were huge but inside was a little dissapointing. Im not sure what I was expecting to be honest...Maybe I'll learn to love all things religious and cultured maybe not. Maybe I'm done with city sight seeing, the fast pace,
smog and litter. Dont get me wrong i've enjoyed every last minute but I'm ready now to slow it down, relax and experience the real South East Asia outside the concrete jungles.
Thursday 7th July
Having seen a lot already we decided to take a stroll round the super sized Times Square Mall although not before getting caught in our first Monsoon. And yes it does rain cats and frogs like weve never seen before. It was actually quite comical to watch. The first droplet fell from the sky giving us a 2 second head start to run for shelter. We managed to grab shelter with steps outside an office building and laugh at those stuck stood in the middle of traffic get absolutley drenched. Everything and anything was used to take cover including newspaper litter... seemed to me like it was more use than a chocolate fire guard, but everyone else seemed to find it quite amusing too. We swung past the Islamic Arts Museum after and swung pretty much straight back out again deciding we were too hungry to concentrate so left a short while after. Time was ticking and this was our last day so
we took a nosey round the Central market on the way back to our so called home, grabbed a bite to eat and left to pack up for our next Journey to the hopefully cool Cameron Highlands in the early morning.
In a nutshell the past 10 days have given us lots of fantastic moments already, we've worn in the footwear and now long to get off the well trodden path and venture a bit further affield to explore what other treats Malaysia has to offer.
So I hope the blog is interesting and not too boring. I'll be the first to admit my grammer is not the best so please excuse any mistakes. It's taken a few hours to get this one done finally but I have a cold beer in my hand and am enjoying our last night in the Highlands, but i'll leave that update for another day, maybe :-)
Love & Kisses
