We have left KL and arrived in Borneo so we thought we should write something about our time in KL. We arrived there with bags on backs in search of our hotel. Unfortunately it was very hot and humid and our hotel was hard to find thank goodness for other tourists with the lonely planet bible. Eventually we found our hotel only to be told to come back in 45mins so we ventured out into the heat once more a few bags lighter. 45mins passed and we went back to our hotel for a long awaited shower only to be told another hour before the room was ready. So Liam decided it was beer time. We sat and enjoyed a very overpriced tiger $6 and had a very eventful chat with a long time hippy who ... read more

Bra ... read more

After a long journey from Koh Tao on the night ferry and a mini van the next day to cross the border we were into the next part of our trip, Malaysia. Our first stop was a place called Pulau Penang an island off the west coast. The island was alot bigger than we thought with many high rise buildings. Here we spent a few days wondering chinatown mostly and little india. On one of the days we also took a trip back across to the mainland a place called Butterworth to organise the bus for the next part of the journey. There weren't many sights to see so one afternoon we went to the cinema. Our next stop was Pulau Pangkor another island off the west coast but further south, this island was alot smaller ... read more

We decided to extend our stay in Kuala Lumpur as we managed to find (on the second attempt) a decent, cheap guesthouse that had everything we needed. We also decided to stock up on some cheap apparel at the bustling Chinatown market, just a short walk from our accommodation. Another big plus for Kuala Lumpur is the excellent public transport system which we have used many times to get places our own steam could not take us. One of the first visits was to the main landmark of the city, and possibly the country, the twin Petronas towers, you can see them from just about any elevated vantage point in the city but the sight from afar does not really do them justice. To get there we took the subway and when we climbed up the ... read more

Yesterday morning I woke up well rested and inspired. I spent 9usd on a jump rope, which I was supposed to use daily and so far hadn't unpacked, it was time. I headed out to a small park a few blocks away from my hostel that overlooked the spires of the Petronas towers. The monsoon rains had hit the night before so the humidity and heat were still climbing back to their feet. With jump rope whirring over head and under feet I began to shake off the morning rust and noticed that hundreds of people in full Muslim regalia were gathering on the sidewalks and in the very park where I was working out. The crowds were joyous, laughing amongst friends and posing for pictures with family. I had forgotten that it was a Muslim ... read more

8th September 2010 We set off at 6.30am to get to the Petronas Twin Towers and queue up for our free pass. The gates open about 8.30 but tickets come on a first come first serve basis. They only have about 800 passes to go up so if you leave it too late you haven’t really got a chance in getting up. We decided to try and walk from the hotel using a map - however we gave up after 30minutes of walking round in circles and got a cab. We got to the towers waited in the queue for about 90 minutes and luckily we got a morning time slot so we went straight up at 9.15. The lift takes you up to the 42nd floor (about 180m high) where you can get out and ... read more

How does the song go, “hot, sweet and sticky?” I knew the humidity was coming, its South East Asia, the word humid doesn’t even exist here, the dictionary just says “see air.” Still urban South East Asia has its own brand of humidity. Bangkok, Manila, Kuala Lumpur they all have it. It is smoggy and savory, revolting and refreshing, swampy and succulent. It is sewage, street food, crowds and sprawl. It is a grab bag of Oh Yeahs and WTFs ground, stirred, heated up and smashed over your head for maximum impact. Today was my first day in Kuala Lumpur or KL as it is more commonly known. As you may have guessed it was hot and humid. I spent nearly 5 hours walking the city. I walked from the Lake Park district to the Petronas ... read more

7th September 2010 The taxi’s picked us up at 8am from Baba’s House and took us to the bus station. We had about 45 minutes to grab some breakfast before getting the bus to Kuala Lumpur. It took us about 2 hours to get to the bus station and then we got a local bus from the station to the hostel. The hostels situated in the main street of China Town amongst all the stalls and shops. We dropped out bags off at the room and got the Monorail to Times Square Mall (13th biggest mall in the world!) We had a look around before heading to the theme park which was situated between the 5th and 8th floor. Its home to the biggest indoor rollercoaster in the world! We paid about £9 to get in ... read more

Chris's Section We had an easy journey to Kuala Lumpur (KL). 1 hour flight, quick hop on the airport bus, one stop on the train and just over the road. Seriously, that was an easy trip. The guesthouse (Matahari Lodge) is very nice and well positioned in bustling Chinatown. The first day was Lou's birthday so we went off to the KLCC Mall (under the Petronas Towers) for a bite to eat and some cinema. At the mall we went to the food court and witnessed something strange. The place was absolutely jam-packed. It took us 20 mins just to find a seat. All the people had bought their food but weren't eating. Took me a minute to figure out why - ramadan. They were waiting for 7.25pm before they could eat. We arrived at ... read more
