Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Chang December 2nd 2010

Woke up early as our bus left at 8am and we were meet by someone from the bus company downstairs she said we were late and beckoned for us to follow her, walking the street for 10 mins we approached a very large bus and we were on our way. We were one of the first on the bus so we decided to pick seats right above the stairs as we could recline them further back without disturbing people behind us, well this was a very quick lesson learned soon after the first person ventured to the toilet which was right next to the stairs which we were sitting above did we begin to smell the stench of urine which got progressively worse as we traveled on our six our bus ride (long distance bus lesson ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok December 2nd 2010

We arrived back on Koh San Road and headed out to find a new abode, we finally settled on the Sawasdee Inn (Riki loved it as the whole hotel was themed purple). We woke up early and decided it was time to see some culture so we headed to Wat Poh where the reclining Buddha resides. Afterward we were in need of some retail therapy so off we went to MBK, Bangkok’s biggest shopping center. We realized that we were pretty shopped out as everything was basically the same as available on Koh San but much more expensive. We skipped the shopping and headed upstairs to the cinemas and saw ‘due date’ both the movie and the nori (seaweed) flavored popcorn was thoroughly enjoyed. We decided we were in need of a nicer place to stay, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok December 2nd 2010

We knew it was time to leave Borneo and head to Thailand but it was still undecided where we were going to go. After spending some time on Mabul we decided our trip had been lacking in beach time, so tossing up between Railey and Koh Chang Island’s we headed to Tawau airport and two hours later we were back in KL, we headed for the airasia counter as we were told we could book tickets on the spot we had 2 hours before our flight so we thought there would be plenty of time to buy the tickets and check in, little did we know how little organization the airasia counter would have an hour later and 1hr 30 mins too late to make our flight we booked a tickets to Bangkok a little later ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Sipadan November 11th 2010

Sipadan Island is rated one of the top dive sites in the world and as we were newly certified divers we thought this was an opportunity not to be missed. It is part of a protected marine park and only 150 diving permits are issued each day. Permits are hard to get without booking months in advance so we had to search many dive shops for prices and permit availabilities but most saying they had no openings for Sipadan for weeks. We had heard that Uncle Chang’s dive company had extra permits and the dive gods smiled upon us as they organized a three day dive trip on the spot, a day later we were on away to Mabul Island to stay on Uncle Chang’s Dive Resort. Our first day was spent chilling on Mabul, eating ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Sandakan November 8th 2010

Riki decided that we would stay in a place called strawberry hotel near the Kinabalu National Park , so we headed to the long distance bus station where we encountered our first experience of aggressive touts, everyone yelling and screaming where you go? Trying to take our bags and who knows what else as even if we wanted to use their services it was so chaotic that it was impossible. We finally made our way to the counter and got our tickets, we told the bus driver to drop us at Kundesang a town nearby the hotel, to our surprise the bus drove past our hotel and continued down the road for a while before it dropped us off in the middle of nowhere, we decided to head to a closer hotel which turned to be ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu October 31st 2010

After a 2 hr flight we leave Kuala Lumpur and arrive in Kota Kinabulu, Borneo. After three attempts at finding a place to stay and a blood filled tick experience we have booked a week at a nice hotel just out of tuoristville so things are cheaper and more local. The main reason we came to Kota Kinabulu was to do our open water diving course. So we popped into Sabah divers and booked the three day course. Day one was pure theory for 7hrs in classroom environment but we got through it knowing that diving was soon to come unfortunatly liam had come down with a killer head cold, and was told diving with sinus problems could be dangerous so he was told to fill himself with as much cold and flu medicine he could ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur » China Town October 10th 2010

We have left KL and arrived in Borneo so we thought we should write something about our time in KL. We arrived there with bags on backs in search of our hotel. Unfortunately it was very hot and humid and our hotel was hard to find thank goodness for other tourists with the lonely planet bible. Eventually we found our hotel only to be told to come back in 45mins so we ventured out into the heat once more a few bags lighter. 45mins passed and we went back to our hotel for a long awaited shower only to be told another hour before the room was ready. So Liam decided it was beer time. We sat and enjoyed a very overpriced tiger $6 and had a very eventful chat with a long time hippy who ... read more
