Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - June 19 - 24 Arriving late in the evening in Kuala Lumpur was a familiar experience; as soon as we got off the bus we were attacked by taxi drivers who assured us they were our only source to get into the city center. Naturally they were lying and we quickly found a local bus at a fraction of the taxi cost. Kuala Lumpur is like many other capital cities; dirty, busy and full of shops, restaurants and hawkers. There really is not too much to do in KL, other than shop and see the landmark Petronas Towers. Once the worlds tallest buildings, they dominate the KL skyline and were our first destination once we set about exploring the city. We managed to get onto the Sky Bridge by pleading with the ... read more

My first CouchSurfing account had been hit and miss. Admitedly, I'd set it up to find free accommodation in expensive places so I made it squeaky clean and 100% real. I met a few colourful characters and we had some memorable times but I couldn't escape the feeling that people weren't responding to my e-mails because of my origin. When a fellow CouchSurfer went out of control and I had to cancel my account to avoid them, I wasn't thinking of coming back any time soon. Eventually the situation calmed down and I had the choice of reopening a new account with my real details or with some bogus ones. I did both. One is Jack Vaughn, an Aussie who likes to have fun. His goal in life is to drink as much beer as humanly ... read more

So it was enough of beaches and island life for us. The plan now was to cut across the peninsula to the west side and the capital city, Kuala Lumpur. Just a quick note about the absolute worst thing about traveling here; the air conditioning. Outside it is consistently 35 degrees and humid, causing you to sweat like a mad-man. For some reason all buses and trains have the air con cranked to the mid-teens. The two extremes are quite unhealthy i believe and by the time we arrived in Kuala Lumpur, 5 hours away, we both got quite sick. Luckily a full day of bed rest cleared that up, meaning we didn't get some tropical disease or anything. The bus dropped us off somewhere in the middle of nowhere on the outskirts of town. Having ... read more

Day 1 Landed safely, and found the hostel without too much bother.  Had a couple of beers to celebrate our arrival, lots of pissed Dutch wearing orange for the footie. We sat down for an Arabic meal which was tasty, followed by a go on the bongos! Day 2 Awake at 4pm wondering where the day went, spent the rest walking the whole of Kl. China town - very busy seen a rat so decided not to eat. Central marker - feet sucked by doctor fish (marks new business venture). Kl tower - not enough money. Twin towers - closed. Back to the bar for a beer n bit 2 eat.   Day 3 Wake up late again so missed out on a tour of the twin towers, so Head to kl tower brill view ... read more

Lazed about in bed for a while then went to try and sort out bus tickets to Mersing for tomorrow. Walked up to Pudaraya Bus station to find it had been gutted!! Unsure as to where to go from here I approached a security guard who luckily could speak a little English. He explained it had moved temporarily to Bukit Jalil and he pointed across at a shuttle bus that would take us there for RM2 each way. Bus was pretty full but it only took about 20mins. Basically they have put the old station into a big car park and all the shops and the ticket counters are now under little tents and a big canopy. It was still the most efficient bus station in Asia though and we got our RM30 tickets speedily. When ... read more

Slept much better in this room though we still shared a single bed as Rob's was a bit pants. Got taxi to airport at about 8. It's only 10mins away but they charge 40,000! When we got there we couldn't see the flight on the screen and Rob started to get a little worried but when we got to the counter it was fine and we checked in with ease until the guy mentioned the airport tax which we hadn't budgeted for (75,000 each). I had enough still on me and luckily Rob had some ringitts he could change. Next was immigration where I realised I had somehow managed to lose my departure card so I had to queue twice. We were far too early (I blame Rob :p he insists on getting to the airport ... read more

So here it is... My final blog while traveling. I remember while overlanding through Africa thinking that i couldn't ever imagine the trip ending and going home. Just as I knew I would, I've had the best year of my entire life. It has been nothing like I expected becuase I had no idea what to expect. When I think about going home I am definitely upset my adventure is over but I know that I have many more to come. Over the past two weeks I have flown over to Sabah/Borneo which is the other side of Malaysia. Borneo is known for its incredible jungle, the highest mountain in Asia, and its islands with world class scuba diving. Alot of the time I spent there was travel time but every destination was worth it. I ... read more

Day 1 - The Journey Well, here it is the start of my blog, The journey itself was fairly uneventful to start with, the drive to stanstead was fairly quick as there was a complete lack of traffic on the roads so i ended up arriving before the flight could even check in!! Once i could eventually check in my bags the process was quick and relatively painful as i had checked in online the day before and so therefore was fast tracked into the same que as the premium passengers (fingers were being crossed in the hope of an upgrade!! needless to say i didnt get one!) after a smooth boarding procedure we were sat on the tarmac waiting for the green light to go to the runway when we were informed that we were ... read more

After we had some trouble uploading our images last time, here are the rest to put images to words from our last entry. We have arrived in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, after a 4 hr bus journey which weaved rather sickeningly round some mountain roads in the rainforest! Tomorrow we have booked ourselves a guided tour through the nearby jungle. The worlds largest flower is here and our arrival has coincided with it opening, apparently only for 7 days. Also we'll meet the local natives and see some of the sights including tea plantations etc. We got a handy discount as it's run by the company who own the hostel, Kang tours. Will update soon, love Toe and Natalie. xxxx ... read more

After checking out of the comfortable Traveller's Lodge in Melaka on Saturday, we had an early breakfast before heading to the Express bus station in town. It was a simple task to find a cheap ride to Malaysia's Capital - Kuala Lumpur. Day 6 - KL. A fairly short ride of two hours saw us arriving in KL around 1pm. Following the guidebook for South East Asia we had expected to arrive in the Central Bus Station Pudu Raya. When we had our bags and headed out we realized this was not the case! In actual fact we had been dropped several miles out of town in what turned out to be a temporary bus station. After a bit of milling around we got some advice from a man who seemed to be French, we were ... read more
