In true travelling style we decided on the bus the next day to go to the Cameron Highlands rather than hanging around in Georgetown for the bus to the Prehentian Islands. We had a couple of hours of rushing around from local bus stops to long distance ones (with a trip to Macdonalds in the middle - Chloe they keep appearing in front of us - help!)… then we got put on a VIP bus to the Highlands - big lovely armchair seats that reclined all the way with rests for your legs and…. well it was yummy after all the traveling we have done recently and it only cost an extra 2quid each! The Cameron Highlands was a nice break from the heat and a chance to enjoy a cup of tea in the morning!! ... read more

Howdy! Updating you on the rest of our time in Borneo and beyond. It happened to be the Harvest Festival for many of the the tribes in Sabah so we took a bus to a small town called Tambunan to try to experience the real deal, rather than staying in the more tourist orientated Kota Kinabalu. On first impressions it was rather quiet and didn't look like too much was happening and we were beginning to regret coming away from everyone else. On further inspection we found an area with 6 longhouses which had been constructed especially for the event and lots of local folk. The party is traditionally to celebrate the harvesting of the paddy fields. There are dances, music and ceremonies to give thanks for the harvest and to keep evil spirits away from ... read more

Well we did have a long and hot bus ride from Melaka to Cherating on April 30th. The air conditioning did not work and the bus was full, lots of families with children - children all quite wonderful in taking the trip in stride and did not need much entertaining from their attentive moms and dads. It was about a 7 hour bus ride to Kuantan where we intended to catch the bus to Cherating - but after stopping at several ticket wickets upstairs in the bus depot we learned that we had to go to the local bus depot 20 minutes away and there were no guarantees there would be a seat today. When we stepped outside there was a taxi, air conditioned and of course willing to take us to Cherating (about 1 hour ... read more

A few days to escape the Shanghai winter...35 degrees in Malaysia :-) loved it! From the streets of Kuala Lumpur to cherating for some sun, sport & beach! Early morning wake up, short shopping stop over in KL and here we are…welcome to Cherating! Ok...it is nearly midnight but the pool is fantastic and drinks are waiting for us…so, eh you live only once! Quick room check in, change to swim suit and we were already heading to the pool and its bar where the rest of the group had already ordered some drinks for us, As you can guess, any party that starts by the pool, finish IN the pool and well it did…not that the guard was very happy about it … had a lot of fun and definitely the best way to chill ... read more

........You may be wondering what happened yesterday or maybe or just thougt I had got bored?! Well, as i was happily typing away and waiting for the ferry to leave, there was the screech or a motorbike stopping outside and a head popped round the corner to enquire in a hasty voice - "what time is your ferry?!!!" "12" I replied confidently then looked at the computer clock to read 1203?!! Thus followed a mad dash to see the ferry about 100m away from the jetty only for them to radio and ask him to turn around which they duly did, allowing us to very sheepishly climb aboard!! We then arrived at a smaller port to discover that the bus that we had been told existed, didn't really! I decided that hitching would be a good ... read more

Firstly, I would like to thanks Kein for giving us a free voucher staying in Legend. But your delayed in taking us had disrupted our plan, how are you going to compensate our losses? Hahaha..we have yet to claim from you….hehehe =) Day 1: KL - Terengganu - Cherating I think it has been 10 years I have never been to east coast. According to some magazines, the east coast is claimed as the most beautiful coastline in Malaysia. My expectation was high before departure. Due to Kein’s unpunctual, we arrived late in Cherating. But along the way, we stopped over at Karak, a tiny town in Pahang state to take our brunch, a bad chicken rice at a Chinese kopitiam. Josh’s durian addict was suddenly erupted, due to that we stopped again to buy ... read more

The title is actually what the place we are staying at is called!! It's a collection of little chalets in the woods (lots of mossies) and is brilliant!! The owner warned us that if we hear bangs on our roof not to be alarmed, it's only the monkeys eating in the trees above and dropping fruit stones - they also have wild boar, which I unknowingly ate in a curry last night (convinced it was beef) - I highly recommend!! The owners are really nice, apparently are taking us out dancing tonight to a place witha 3 piece Filipino band that play rock and roll - we'll let you know how that one goes...! Last night we chatted with the owner, the guy is an ex policeman who was involved in fighting the guerilla communists in ... read more

helloooooo! so we've been in malaysia for... almost 2 weeks now, and its been awesome. most of the time here was spent on an island called palau tioman, which is just off the east coast of malaysia. we just got back to the mainland today. we were only going to spend 4 days there, but ended up spending 9 days instead. haha it was soo beautiful there, and really relaxed. we also met up with a girl named adele that we had been travelling with through new zeland, and we also saw her once in australia. she stayed with steve and me in this chalet just off the beach. her main purpose on the island was diving, and we had met some of her diving friends, and after talking to them for a couple days we ... read more

On March 15, we left Kuala Teregganu to Cherating. The long distance bus took about 6 hours to get from KT to Cherating. We chose Cherating because it is supposed to be a sleepy beach resort, that "Malaysians forgot about". Indeed it is very quiet. Although it is school holidays, there are hardly any students there. I guess most students go to the bigger towns and cities for their holidays. We found a guesthouse. There was a French girl, who seemed to speak fluent Bahasa (Malaysian language) and she was negotiating with us on the room rates and was holding quite firm. It turned out she was just a guest. We decided to quietly negotiate with the Malaysian owner and got a better price. Cherating beach is long, with white fine sand. The water is ... read more

After a few days of cilling at Palau Tiomen we've headed north to Cherating, partly to break up the journey and secondly as me and Dave have heard that Cherating was worth a visit. Its certainly not what we expected or hoped for! Its basically a very small village with a few travellers, here mainly couples and germans and a few expats who seem to live here in the chalets full time. Its ok but quiet, a bit too quiet for me. We were orginally going to stop in a hostel called the Shadow of the moon at at half-past four. Tip to anyone who reads this: Don't!!! We arrived thinking it looked a bit spooky to be met by a Drunk bloke that looked like Billy Connelly and sounded like ozzy osborne and a bloke ... read more
