2006/7/31 Well, I’ve thought long and hard, and I’m stopping now, because I have a killer headache. I’m sick of this company and I may briefly return home. I live frugally (despite my traveling), so I can afford it. I can’t stay though—walking a million miles a day and working so many hours and worrying about visa nonsense is just getting to me. Today marks the several-ith time that I’ve almost passed out in class. My students are starting to notice. I told Adachi and said that I had to leave, and he’s going to cancel my visa unless I work until he finds a replacement—which could well be months. So, unless he finds someone in a week, screw him. He can cancel it. Tim told me I should probably get myself on a flight back ... read more

I finally was able to play some golf in Japan, but not in the best conditions. My friend, Yuichi, and I had tried to play at Hakone Kurakake Golf Course a few weeks ago, but got rained out. It's difficult to get good weather in this area because the course is in the mountains near Mt. Fuji. But our second attempt was a pleasant day, even though our first 4 holes we had to play in the fog. Not long after beginning to play, I could tell that golfing in Japan would be a little different than at home. The golf course provided us with a cart that would follow its own track throughout the entire course, and you could start and stop it by a remote control in your pocket. We were also equipped with ... read more

Doing the soft shoe shuffle 31/07/06 We sleep for most of the 6hr flight to Narita but still arrive feeling knackered, we stagger like zombies through immigration and customs and find a space to rebuild the bikes near the bus stops. People keep wandering up to have a look (see the silly Gaijin getting hot and sweaty). Next to us is the pick up point for one of the buses to Tokyo, each time a bus leaves the porters all bow to it which is really weird to see. As we are about to leave they approach us and the best English speaker asks us where we have been and where we are going, she then translates for the others, there follows a short Q and A session about touring with the bikes then they wish ... read more

... And woke up about a half hour later. I looked over at Uki and Tanaka - they seemed to be getting bored, so we headed downstairs to the check-out area. It had been a delightful time, and remarkably inexpensive: all four floors of baths, gym, relaxation room, and lounge cost us $12 for the whole day. It was getting to be time to head back, though, so we went to the car and drove back to his family's house. But along the way back, when I noticed a cool-looking castle off in the distance, I asked what it was. "Fukichiyama Castle," Tanaka said, and then delivered us there. The castle was closed - for reconstruction, it said, but they were lots of workers around doing very un-reconstruction-like things. I went over to one worker, who ... read more

We landed in Tokyo Friday night after 15 hours in transit and very little sleep. We were ushered off the planes and guided through the airport by a fence of people holding JET Programme signs. Just to make sure none of us strayed from the herd we were all labeled with blue stickers also saying that we were part of the JET Programme. The ride from the airport at Chibu into Shinjuku was just as impressive as I imagined it would be. Through the darkness Tokyo was one twinkling city with giant buildings, sculptures and one ferris wheel lighting up the horizon. There is some English here, which was reassuring. In an emergency, I would at least be able to locate the nearest shoe outlet. I also liked the billboard of a white guy pressed up ... read more

Tuesday 8/1/06 Ok here it is…the Tokyo entry!! *cheers* Well Tokyo was…ok. I mean it was cool, don’t get me wrong, there were some awesome things to see, things you could never find anywhere else in the world, but honestly, I prefer Gifu. I know I know, you can all look at me quizzically now, but in Gifu the air is cleaner, the trains are less crowded, the people are WAY nicer, and stuff is a hell of a lot cheaper. You want sticker shock, go to Tokyo, where you will pay $20 for a burger and fries. No joke. Ok, now that I have that out of my system, let me tell you about some of the fun stuff we did! When I first arrived in Tokyo I was, to put it mildly, in awe. ... read more

Eve and I had a successful 4 days at the Fuji Rock Festival at the Naeba Ski Resort in Niigata prefecture. In four days we managed to see 32 bands, catch 3 up close and personal acoustic sessions, get 12 hours of sleep over the course of the festival, and get covered in mud. We arrived Thursday night to set up camp on the ski resort’s golf course. We ended up on an incline so everything kept sliding down in the tent. The first official day of the festival was Friday so there were some special acts on Thursday night including band performances and a circus/freak-show act. We were able to catch 33 bands play in either their entirety or partial sets (with links to a few short videos I took of the festival): -Shoen Knife- ... read more

Countryside Retreat I almost didn't go. It was a long week - we started doing in-vivo imaging, which regretfully means the mouse has to be alive. Like, really alive, intact alive - not the sort-of-alive of the happily-floating brain samples. So that means that we have to peek at their brains (some disassembly required) using as little anesthesia as possible (otherwise they either overdose and die or freak out, speed up the metabolism of the anesthesia, and die). It was less than pleasant. So when work was finally done for the week, I just wanted to go home and retreat. I would cook a quiet dinner, read a book, and then sleep for as many hours as my brain could handle. I'm enough of an introvert that going out with friends is an effort; traveling to ... read more

Monday 7/31/06 *First let me say, the next two posts won’t have as many pictures as usual…it’s kind of hard, when you’re having fun with your friends, to stop everything and say, “hey, let’s take a pic!” I decided I would rather be in the moment with everyone then stop every few min to take a picture. Hence, the lack of usual photos* And now, on with the post… Another hectic, but exciting weekend here in Japan! This one started off Friday night when I went to play volleyball with a bunch of co-workers. I Shou-chan drove me in her car to the gym, which is this massive facility near our office. Unfortunately, there was no air-conditioning so the place was boiling. There were about 10 of us there and everyone had a lot of fun ... read more
