Je ... read more

We arrived at the Kyoto Tourist Information Centre to see a big sign reading ''NO VACANCY IN KYOTO, JULY 17''!!! Uh oh!! Dana, Linda, Zoe and I went through every possible scenario and decided the best option would be to stay up all night. It was the Gion Matsuri (festival), one of the biggest in Japan, therefore the city was maxed out with tourists from all over the country. It sounded too good to be missed, so we hit the streets. We spent the day on Sunday dodging rain drops, and visiting . We mostly took it easy knowing it would be a long night ahead. The streets filled with festival-goers around 6p.m. It is tradition to dress in yukatas for summer festivals...and just about everyone was decked out. The streets were lined with food vendors, ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! And this truly will be a stretch of the memoirs, as I have a major back blog (ha ha get it!!) of journals to write and since this trip to Kyoto I have been to Disneyland, Tokyo, Hokkaido, and back to Kyoto again! For all those that are not living as aliens in Japan, gaijin is the special name we foreigners are given, and it literally means alien- our identification card here is called our alien registration!!! Does it make any one else think of Third Rock from the Sun- great show!!! Anyway, back to Kyoto, ... read more

Ok, well I’m starting to actually feel like a student here. But only in these last two weeks of class have I been really forced to work. Of course, I could have had my head stuck in a book all semester long and have gotten good grades, but I wouldn’t have learned nearly as much as I have. I find it a little frustrating that I’m probably only going to get fair marks in the semester where I’ve learned more about my major than I have all through college. It’s that kinda shit that turns me off to teaching. But although I’ve been studying a relatively fair amount recently, there has been no shortage of adventures. On Friday, everyone went out to our favorite restaurant for a “pre-sayonara party.” For about 25 bucks a person, it’s ... read more

Eve, Rusty and I planned a trip to Kamakura, about an hour outside of Tokyo to see the giant Buddha statue and visit the beach. Kamakura was once the capital of Japan so it has many shrines and temples, but having seen one too many temples in recent months, we opted to make the trip for Daibutsu- the giant bronze Buddha statue. The Great Buddha Shrine was a 10 minute walk from the local train station, on top of a hill facing out towards the sea. The Buddha is over 10m high and was cast in the 13th century. The Buddha was once housed in a wooden building, but it was destroyed along with the town of Kamkura in 15th century by a massive tidal wave, leaving the Buddha standing alone. The Buddha statue was impressive, ... read more

Hello Everyone!!! Well, Kelsey arrived safe and sound here in Japan. I was so excited to see her. It is so nice having her here to say with me. I missed her so much! So...I'll get to it...Since Kelsey has arrived we have been pretty busy. The night she got here I picked her up at the hotel, where the bus dropped her off, and we went to E-Village where I live. We got washed up and went for dinner. I took her to a small Chinese restaurant in the Ito Yokado, the mall just by my house. Yes I know....Chinese....her first meal in Japan. But it was the closest restaurant and she was tired. So, we ate and then went back to my place where we attempted to watch a movie...but she didn't make it ... read more

Asia » Japan » Mt Fuji July 15th 2006

What a difference a year makes. Around this time last year, Kathy and Netty invited me to climb the tallest and most venerated mountain in Japan: Fuji-san, as the locals affectionately call it. At the time, I thought Mt. Fuji was too far, the trip there was too expensive, and I could think of at least a million more enjoyable things to do than hiking up a mountain in the pitch of darkness just to watch the sun rise from the summit. Moreover, I couldn’t understand why my friends would want to endure the experience. True, climbing Mt. Fuji is a challenge many people from all corners of the globe undertake, but when much more splendid mountain hikes back in the countries which issued our passports. Why not wait until returning home and then hike all ... read more

Today was our day at Tokyo Disneyland, located just outside of the city. Rusty and I met up with Eve and Jason downtown and made our way over to Disney. We purchsed our tickets in advance because we were told that Disenyland often reaches it's capacity in the morning so it was best to buy tickets in advance so not to be disappointed. The minute we stepped inside the gates it became a bit surreal: it is EXACTLY the same as DisneyWorld in Florida....except everyone is speaking Japanese and people are wearing yukatas and kimonos. It was a little weird at first as we walked through the Crystal Palace to the New Orleans-area where Pirates of the Caribbean is located. That's where we got our first surprise of the day- the wait fo rthe ride was ... read more
