I dont know where to start- the clouds, the sunrise, the height, the pain, the cold, the wind or the stick, but I do want to say- I CLIMBED MT FUJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hang on, lets put that in bold writing I CLIMBED MT FUJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was one of the things that was on my 'What I want to do in Japan' list before I even arrived and while I was not sure I could do it I knew that I would always feel like I should have if I didnt. It took some convincing Marissa that it was something we could do, but once her brother was on board, plus a new found Japanese friend, Hide (Hee-de) it was all systems go. There is a Japanese proverb that says 'He who climbs Mount Fuji once is a ... read more

Having such little evidence to go by, I suspected that my mission to find the Golden Carrot may prove impossible! Considering the sheer number of temples in Japan alone I thought 3 weeks could not possibly be enough time. As we left Chiran, then Miyazaki and then my friends left to go to Kyoto and then home, time was running out, and fast. My family were expecting me home in less than 7 days, but could I return empty-handed? And then, out of the blue, I opened my weary eyes towards the end of a short cruise up the river to find it right there in all its glory - the G.C.!! Right by Sensoji temple, in the heart of Asakusa. It's fitting that its near the temple that houses a small statue of the Buddhist ... read more

Harajuku a.k.a. Tokyo's fashion district is a great place to discover Tokyo's sense of fashion. Anything goes here and I mean ANYTHING. Sunday is the best day to discover all senses of fashion, from jaw dropping styles to "oh my gosh, I can't believe they're wearing that" styles. It's common for teens to dress up in their Sunday best (literally) and come to Harajuku to show it off. They don't mind having photos taken, as tourists enjoy discovering Tokyo fashion. For those who are familiar with Singer, Gwen Stefani (from No Doubt), her 4 female Japanese dancers are Harajuku girls. Harajuku girls/boys dress in a certain style common and known to the Harajuku area. Harajuku is also a great shopping district. My favourite shopping area in Harajuku is Takeshita-dori (dori is Japanese for street). Enjoy the ... read more

July 8 So I woke up this morning in Hiroshima, and it was pouring down raining all morning so I decided to take my time leaving. I ate another really delicious breakfast at the YH and sat around talking to other guests. Most of them were the same people I had met the day before. They were all pretty cool. I also forgot to finish my laundry so that took a bit as well. After leaving Hiroshima, I went to Miyajima. Miyajima is famous for the large orange otori(gate) that stands out in the bay. It’s pretty famous. You may have seen it before. Anyways, I took a ferry over to Miyajima, saw the temple there and the otori, and then hiked up the mountain that was there. I couldn’t find a place to store my ... read more

Hey everyone! I'm so sorry that I've just got round to updating my blog! You all probably know I've been back a couple of weeks but I had a lot to sort out and I've started back at work....not valid excuses I know! Anyway, I spent my last few days in Japan in Tokyo. As much as I wanted to climb Mount Fuji, everything was going against me doing it (lack of money, time, it was raining constantly, I coudn't even get a japanese girl to find out how to get there, the huts were closed and I only met one guy who would do it with me and our dates didn't match up) so I had to let the idea go....but my brother is coming to Japan for a year so who knows, I might ... read more

06/7/4 Happy Independence Day!! One of the teachers from Britain surprised me while I was eating lunch to congratulate me, and I had been surrounded by quiet (in the kitchen) for so long that I about jumped out of my skin. Charming guy, really. From Nottingham. I have to say, not celebrating the fourth didn't bother me a bit. Mainly because I never got really excited about it to begin with. I saw a Japanese guy wearing a beret the other day!!! It was so funny. His facial structure was very similar to someone else who used to wear a beret, too. If his skin tone hadn’t been so decidedly Japanese I’d have done a doubletake. But seriously, you don’t usually see things like berets. American culture is quite admired here, but French culture is ... read more

July 6&7 So I did what I was expecting I was going to do. I rushed through the past two cities, Fukuyama and Onomichi, and wound up in Hiroshima last night. I went to Onomichi instead of Tomonoura because there was no rail line going to Tomonoura, just some obscure bus line that I honestly didn’t feel like messing with. Since I was kinda swinging through both cities pretty quickly, I only visited a history museum and park in Fukuyama, and a pretty extensive park in Onomichi. I was forced to take a bus at one point during the trip yesterday because there had been an accident, not really sure how bad, on one of the train lines. The bus system proved to be really difficult since there were no instructions in English, and they used ... read more

Tokyo...impossible to describe in one word! Exciting, bustling, bright, loud, serene, traditional...12.2 million people! It is described as city that everyone must see once in their lifetime. I agree! Those of you who know me well, generally know that I'm not a big fan of large cities. I find them intimidating and overwhelming, an assault on your senses and peace of mind. However, I had a fair idea of what I was in for before I visited Tokyo. When I first arrived in Japan last August, I spent three days in one of the busiest areas of Tokyo, Shinjuku, in a fancy hotel, attending seminars for my new job of teaching English as a Foreign Language to high school students. Really, the only glimpses of the city I saw were when I went out for dinner ... read more

The past couple of weekends have been so busy - so busy in fact I'm separating our shenanigans into two blog entries. The start of June was very quiet. Quiet in the sense we didn't get up to much, but not quiet at home because we both came down with a horrible chest infection and the flu. There was nothing but coughing, sneezing and wheezing coming from our house for about 3 weeks. But we are pleased to announce that we are finally better and hope to stay that way for long time. (Note to future travellers to Japan - medication here is a LOT weaker than at home, so come prepared!) Our friend Matt from Australia has been out in Japan with his Japanese wife, Mie for the past couple of weeks. He came out ... read more
