06/7/20 Sick. And speaking loudly enough to keep a four-year-old’s attention for fifty minutes.. I am not happy.  And I don’t why I’m sick. Grrr. It is a fabulous excuse to eat ice cream, though. Silver lining, eh? I am also the world’s laziest teacher—or today I was. My EK class today was told that their Japanese teacher was leaving, so in the Japanese portion of the class they did nothing. I was then supposed to teach them for half an hour with a sore throat. We talked in Japanese, drew on the board with our non-dominant hands and I made them review past tense quickly. One of them was kind of cocky, so I asked him to write the past tense of extrapolate on the board. He gave it a decent shot. While not ... read more

So the first project I needed to accomplish was to learn to cook some Japanese foods. I enjoy cooking, and have learned a lot from doing it last summer. The whole summer I tried to make everything from scratch, which turned out to be expensive and very difficult, but I learned a lot about how to create foods. What sorts of things to mix in with what to achieve a certain consistency, taste, color, or accent - that sort of generally applicable stuff. So I wanted to apply that knowledge this summer and learn how to adjust traditional Japanese foods to my taste. Japan has some strange restrictions on my cooking ability, however: 1) My pantry where I can store things is, in fact, a shelf above the sink. My entire store of foodage has to ... read more

Konnichi wa! Well I am here and it is amazing! For those of you who I haven't already bored with the details of my trip, let me give you a quick run-down of what my time in Japan will involve . . . My aunt and uncle are international teachers at the American School In Japan (ASIJ) and they were able to get me a job working at the summer program that the school puts on for the local kids. It's 4 weeks long and 1500 Japanese kids come through. It all starts this coming Monday. Before that, I've had this first week totally on my own to explore the country. Before leaving home I bought a rail pass that lets me take the famous "Bullet" trains all over the place. Soon I'll write entries about ... read more

Just a quick entry to say hello, no I haven´t forgot about my blog recently but between the humid weather and working quite abit I´ve scaled my touring back a bit in the last couple of weeks, but fear not I am really just saving my energy and bucks for my upcoming vacation! Summer vacation is almost here, in a few short weeks I have TWO, count´em TWO glorious weeks off of work and I am really excited! I am headed to Tokyo to check out the sights and sounds of Japan´s capital city. I´ve been leafing through my LonelyPlanet for ideas and so far I think I´ll be checking out Harajuku, Shinjuku (where a million + people use a single train station each day) Ginza (which is supposed to be one of the world´s great ... read more

Friday 7/21/06 So last night was way fun! After work Ko-san and I stopped by the book store to pick up what I thought was the last chapter of Fruits Basket, but to my surprise, I think there will be one more!!! Yay!!! Ahh, this chapter was so good though, I had chills at the end. I also ordered the first “Genki” book, which is the #1 Japanese Language book for English speakers, and, although it’s $30 in the US, it’s less than 10 here!! So I may just order the new edition of the second volume as well because it’s so cheap. Then after we got home, I got a call from Shou-chan and we decided to get together because she lives so close to Ko-san’s house. It was so much fun! We all ate ... read more

I wanted to leave one more entry while I am here in Tokyo with unlimited internet access at the hostel. We are leaving for Korea on Saturday morning and I dont think we will have it there. Also, the weather has improved so we may be attempting the climb up to Fujisan tonight...I really don't want to, I don't think we are prepared. Yesterday it poured all day so we thought it would be a good day for Tokyo National Museum. I never saw so many buddha's in my life. Golden, bronze, siver, limestone, marble, big, medium, small Budda statues. You name it they had it. Lots of interesting stuff in that museum. Yesterday we experienced probably our most interesting display of Japanese tradition and culture. We attended a Tea Ceremony in one of the really ... read more

Thursday 7/18/06 Well it has been quite an eventful last few days! Thursday dinner went well and everyone LOVED the macaroni and cheese. I made it with 2 different kinds of cheese so it was particularly yummy : ) Then Friday at work a few of us pooled some money and had a pizza party!! It was soooooo good!! I had been craving pizza for the longest time, and thankfully they have Pizza Hut in Japan!!! Wai!!! The only bad thins is the pizzas are WAY expensive, about $20 for a medium, and the mediums aren’t much bigger than American personal size pizzas!!!!! Oh well, it was so worth it!! We ordered lots of different kinds and one of the girls here poured a whole packet full of jalapeño sauce on hers!! Hahaha! That was a ... read more

****************************************** But, regretfully, not a good one. It's seems I'm quite unable to write this time, so I'm just gonna shove these posts out into the internet mostly unedited and let the pictures tell the story of what I've been up to - lest they become so stale I don't even remember them. Allow me to provide but a thin drapery of narrative for some images... ****************************************** Well, the last few days at the center passed fairly uneventfully. I headed back to the center and hung out with people, but priorities had definitely changed by then. People were focused on moving out, packing up, and rocking their new locations. Selling bikes, paying up center debts, returning things, and wrapping up Kyoto dominated thoughts. So, it turned out to be fairly uneventful for those of us staying ... read more

Today we ventured out to Yokohama, another large city about an hour away from Tokyo. We had heard that Yokohama had quite a large and famous Chinatown, and we really wanted to check that out as well.... Once we arrived in Chinatown, we immediately realized that although similar to NYC's Chinatown, there were two main differences: The first being that this Chinatown was MUCH cleaner than that of New York's, but alas, was much more EXPENSIVE as well (food, shopping, etc!) In fact, it took us awhile just to find a restaurant for lunch that wouldn't cost us over 5,000 yen/person (about $50/person!) After lunch, we did a little sightseeing, shopping, tried some "machine-squeezed packets" of frozen yogurt (very astronaut-like), and checked out a few Chinese temples and shrines in the area. As you can see, ... read more

Just wanted to send off a quick blog to mainly share some photos from my birthday. Words can't describe how wonderful my birthday here in Japan was. I had to work, which wasn't really that bad as it was a quiet day due to the 17th being a public holiday in Japan - Marine Day, apparantly. Afterwards a big group of workmates and friends went out for dinner at our favourite restaurant - The Chopstick Cafe. It's always hard when you are away from friends and family back home, especially on special occasions, and I was quite overwhelmed at the number of special friends we have here in Japan who went to the effort of making my birthday such a special time. The wonderful staff at the Chopstick Cafe (who now know us by name and ... read more
