Hello Everyone, Well, here is the other half of my parents trip here in Japan. We have had so much fun. I really enjoyed their company and now will miss them very much...even though I will see them so soon. Wednesday turned out to be another rainy day. Mom and Dad were planning on going on a bus tour around Tokyo but decided that since a typhoon was expected to come that they would skip the tour and relax in their hotel room until I was done work. So after work, I went to their hotel to meet them and I took them to a place called an "onsen." An onsen is a traditional Japanese hot spring. It's a place of relaxation and peace. When we first got there we booked a massage and picked out ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! So to make this blog a bit more exciting to write its gonna be an A-Z of what Marissa and I did in our 4 day visit to Hokkaido. Not that Hokkaido wasnt exciting, it was, its just you get sick of writing 'and then we did this and then we saw that', and come on lets admit it, most people just look at the pictures anyway!!! A is for Air! It was fresh, clean and you could even see the stars, the mountains and blue sky- no haze!!!! B is for Beer We were in ... read more

Today is my second full day in Sapporo and I am in love with the place already. I don't even mind how unbelievably hot and sticky it is here at the moment. I definitely haven't left summer behind yet. I'm all settled into my apartment, although my hard mattress has got to go. It hasn't mattered the past two nights because I have been too jet lagged and filled with Japanese beers to care. My apartment is in a great area with lots of stuff to do. There is an array of different entertainment and food options. Right next to my home is a place called Rocky's with a huge multi-story gorilla on the front of it. I am really close to the subway so I can just zip into the city center with no problem. ... read more

It's vacation, and I am not going anywhere!! Well, that's a lie. I'll spend o-bon with my host family. I really need this vacation, too. Yay!! Yesterday was payday, but I didn't get paid until 9:00 at night because my boss LOST my salary. This is a bit of a problem, yes? I called him twice before he even did anything about. Lazy bastard. I'm going to have so much fun when I leave. I hope it really inconviences him. He charged me full rent for living in someone else's living room, too. We will have a fun chat about that after vacation. I'm clairvoyant, I can see how it will go. He'll give me some bullshit reason as to why he did it, then say he's busy and hang up. :) And then I will ... read more

Well, this morning we slept in for a little, and then we set out to go to Mount Rokko, which is the highest point in Kobe. It took us about a half hour to get there, and then we took a cable car up the mountain. The cable cars are a lot like the inclines in Pittsburgh. This mountain is huge, so the cable car ride seemed like it took awhile. Once we were up there, there really wasn’t a lot to do, but the view was absolutely amazing. It was, like the one thing I had absolutely wanted to do while we were there, and I was so upset when I didn’t think we’d be able to do it, but I’m glad that we were able to even though there wasn’t anything to do ... read more

Sapporo Tokyo is an amazing city with so much to see and do and crazy fashions to be amused by, but to tell the truth...I"M OVER IT...the mass crowds, the subway, the enormousness of everything! So it was goodbye to Tokyo (new blog coming) and hello to Hokkaido - Japan's second largest and northernmost island. We had planned this trip just in time for the Sapporo Summer Beer Festival. It took about 1 hour 40 mins to fly, and then we caught a train to Sapporo and another train or two to our hostel, Ino's Place. The hostel was very nice and homely, but lacked air-conditioning. We dumped our bags, met some Norwegian girls in our dorm (one was very strange and didn't talk but just took photos of us without asking or saying what she ... read more

So, early on that Wednesday morning I got up, thought I had lost my passport, did the worst shave in history and stumbled onto the bus to aiport no2. Then on the crest of a Typhoon we made the 1 hour jouney South to Matsuyama. Ehime translates as 'Love princes' and is reffered to as the sunkissed corner of Japan, not least because of its output of Mikan (oranges or madarines I forget which) but also as it sit with its coastline on the Inland Sea or Seto Naikai. Its very still and very hot (Even now as I write this on the 9th Oct the sun is shining outside and its a healthy 25 degrees outside). Piling off the plane, feeling incredibly nervous for some reason, we left the tiny airport and were greated by ... read more

This entry will be short. I am sitting at Popeye internet cafe with my new friend from New York, Stephanie, and an Asahi beer in front of me. Steph and I just met (she is not actually teaching with the JET program but is here on a private contract) but foreigners tend to stick together in the rural areas. She is actually friends with the owner of the cafe (she is very outgoing as one would expect New Yorkers to be) so apparently the beer and internet use are free, though neither of us really understands Japanese and the owner does not speak much english. You will also have to excuse my english as I can not find the apostrophes on this Japanese keyboard. My apologies also if the writing suddenly switches to Japanese characters...it seems ... read more

Wednesday 8/9/06 Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve updated, but I have been pretty busy and haven’t had much chance to write. Last Tuesday I moved in with a new host family, the Yamashitas, who are extremely kind and wonderful people. The family consists of a mother, Akemi-san, father, Masatoshi-san, and 18 yr. old daughter, Erika-chan. The own some kind of clothing manufacturing company not far from the office. Their home is smaller than the previous two, but still very comfortable, and they have a cat and a dog who are so cute!! My room is on the first floor, which is lucky because my suitcases seem to have grown to an alarming size since I’ve been here ;) My room is very beautiful, with tatami mats on the floor and lots of carved ... read more
