Hello All!! Well, July and August are festival months here in Japan. The people celebrate the summer season with "Hanabi" festivals (or firework festivals), Yukata parties, and much more. There seems to be something going on all most every weekend somewhere in Japan. It's actually very exciting. So on July 29th, Shin Urayasu had their Hanabi festival. Those of you who don't know...I live in the city of Shin-Urayasu. Anyways, after work all the old and new Ariel’s got all dressed up in our Yukata's and headed out to the sea wall where the fireworks were. Yes, you heard me right...old and new Ariel’s...the new cast for the next contact is here now doing rehearsals and will take over when my cast goes home. But yeah, we had to go and reserve a spot at 11:00am ... read more

I have never done this before, but here goes..... Hopefully I won't bore everyone! This blog will be about my and my husband's relocation to Tokyo, Japan. For the time being, I plan to write about how this move came about, the logistics of the move and the move itself. Eventually when we get to Japan, I will write about our finding a place to live, getting settled, finding our way around and then our living in Tokyo and our adjustment to the culture. Once all of that happens I will write about our travels in Japan and hopefully before too long I'll be writing about our travels all over Asia. We plan (and hope) to have many of our family and friends come to vist and we'll share those experienses as well. First... a little ... read more

Sorry, I haven't written a blog for these photos, but I still wanted to post them. These were all taken during my month in Tokyo this last summer. Tokyo is a CRAZY city! There is one area that we went to called Harajuku (Gwen Stefani sings about the "Harajuku Girls") and that is where all these crazy outfits come from. Definite entertainment! Sorry I am too lazy to write a blog about these, but so much time has passed that I probably couldn't remember the details anyways... so, read the picture captions... just this once. Enjoy!... read more

You read about it in literature, you hear about it from fellow travelers, and you see pictures of it from every source. Steeped in tradition, Kyoto is bursting at the seams with a collection of gardens and pagodas and everything else that has come to represent Japan. So imagine our surprise when we stepped off the train and walked out of Kyoto Station and into one of the ugliest welcoming sights we've seen in ages. Kyoto Tower looks like a cheap candle, and it's surrounded by boring concrete blocks. The station is actually a very nice glass and steel structure, but unfortunately it's behind you, so you don't notice it until you leave. Thankfully, this beautiful city more than makes up for any shortcomings upon arrival, and you soon realize it was a good idea you ... read more

Hello Everyone, I don't know if any of you know this or not but baseball is huge in Japan. Next to soccer during the world cup this year, baseball is the sport to watch here. So, on Friday I had the opportunity to go to the Tokyo Dome to see a baseball game. Summer (another Ariel) and I went together to watch some of our co-workers cheerlead at the game and to get the whole experience in. The girls we work with told us to meet them at 3:00 so we could take part in a raffle. So, when we got there they gave us our tickets and sent us downstairs to where the raffle took place. We weren't exactly sure what was going on but we figured out that they would draw a number from ... read more

Well folks, I've been on the move. This past week has been Obon holiday in Japan. Other than having a week off to travel, I wasn't sure what this holiday really meant. The question "What is Obon holiday?" made for a great conversation starter/time spender in pretty much all of my classes. Lesson planning, my ass! So I found out that during this week the Japanese people are visited by the spirits of their loved ones who have passed. People travel to wherever they need to in Japan to visit the grave sites of these people and say prayers for them. It seemed kind of sad to me, but my students all assured me that it was actually a great celebration of the spirits. Either way, it was a week off! I spent a few days ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! When Marissas parents were here we went back to Kyoto for 2 nights. These are my highlights from the trip!!................... 1. Sanjusangendo- the 1001 wooden statues of Kannon with 42 arms each! 2. Weird girl on the bus screwing up her nose, sticking her tongue out and making funny faces at her boyfriend and continuing to do so even after she saw us giggling uncontrollably at her! 3. Kiyomizudera- "Pure Water Temple" Our ryokan was right near here, so we walked up. Not just another temple!!!! 4. Cormorant Fishing at Arashiyama- Not as great as I ... read more

After four chaotic days and nights in Tokyo, we boarded a speedy Shinkansen train and hauled ass to Osaka, heart of the Kansai region and jumping off point to see the culture and history of Japan. The citizens of Osaka are revered in travel literature as friendly, down to earth people. Frankly, I thought they were just a bunch of assholes. Rude, pushy, and in a rush to get places it seems, as they were constantly darting in your path and making you change direction. That's when you discover the joys of a huge backpack handy for smushing people into doorways as they try to cut in front of you on train platforms. And if you're reading this, I saw you trying to squeeze through on my left, bitch. Osaka is essentially just another big Japanese ... read more

Ever have one of those ideas that's pure genius, only to have it ruined by the fact that someone thought of it first? And what makes it worse is that word never got around to you that it existed already? Well, I had one of those brilliant ideas today, but I'll come back to that in a little while. Tokyo is a massive city. From 45 storeys up, in the south tower observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Offices, it's an urban landscape as far as the eye can see. Like circus midgets in a Chevette, Tokyo has 35 million people crammed into an area roughly twice the size of PEI. I know it's a bad analogy, but everything is made funnier by midgets. And monkeys. Midgets and monkeys. Oh, and pirates too. Pirates are ... read more

Waking up to an alarm is never nice, especially after a night out (see ), but we were off to Kyoto! It was Amy’s and my second visit to this amazing city. Last time we were in Kyoto, bad weather prevented us from doing a lot of things we were now able to do this trip. The photos do most of the explaining but the highlights were: Kiyomizudera Temple - Beautiful location up on the hill close to our ryokan. I also loved the shopping street leading up to it as you could taste test nearly everything! Sanjusangendo - 1001 statues of Kannon carved from wood and painted gold. We were not allowed to photograph inside, but trust me it was amazing! Fushimi Inari Shrine - Yes, all the red torii gates! They were actually very ... read more
