We spent the weekend of May 5-7 in Tokyo. Jim had business travel in Japan that week so on Friday the boys and I hopped on a plane and met him there. It was SO cold compared to Thailand....probably in the 50's and we have definitely acclimated to the tropical heat. It also rained most of the weekend. Brrrr. We saw some of the major sites: Sony Center (which did NOT have any video games to play with BTW), Pokemon Museum (much to the boys' delight), Ginza (the high end shopping district), the HUGE electronics stores, the Asakusa shrines (a must see and definitely my favorite part of the trip), and we spent lots of time on the subway getting from here to there. Here are some pics: ... read more

We came back to Tokyo on Saturday night and there wasn't much time left as were both leaving on Tuesday. We went out to dinner at an Italian place (I think Mom had had about as much Japanese food as she could handle on our two short trips) then I took her to Shibuya, the 'Lost in Translation' area of the city. We wandered around there a bit; it's really fun just to walk around and people watch. Sunday we accompanied Yuko and the kids to her friend's house, whom I had met before and we had a lovely tea. I then took Mom to Ueno to bit of museum browsing, but it was pouring down rain afterwards so we didn't end up doing much else. Monday Seiko took Mom and I to the Tsukiji Fish ... read more

We woke up at about 7.30am the next day. We took the subway and stopped at Ginza and walked to Tsukiji. Past the Kabuki Theatre. We thought that we went the wrong way as the pedestrian traffic towards was minimal. So, anyway, it was one straight road (Harumi-dori) from Ginza to Tsukiji. Then came a centre, bustling with activities. It was a row of eateries at the External Market. We saw many people queuing up to order at a what seemed to be a very popular ramen stall. It was crowded with people standing and slurping down their noodles. There was another tempura soba/udon a few stalls away, it was also crowded with people. We made turned left and walked further in, along the perimeter Tsukiji External Market. There were shops selling dried nuts and all ... read more

The time had come! We had planned this trip for a while, well for at least 3months. Readup daily read-up on where to go visit and to eat!!! Japan Hour shown weekly on local TV channel had pretty much inspired us to go to Japan too. My LP Tokyo guidebook was the 4th edition 2001 and the LP Kyoto guidebook was the 2nd edition 2001. So you could guess, we could not really rely on the books. So, we turned to the online sources for latest information and opinions from other travellers. Our main source of guide URLs are Lonely Planet , Japan Guide and Frommers. Here are some other sites which helped in our trip planning : *Japan National Tourist Organisation *Tokyo Metropolitan Government Touri... read more

About a month ago I went to the Imperial Gardens in Tokyo with two guys from Sweden. It was quite pleasant, lots of trees and grass. The Swedes are heavily addicted to an online game called World of Warcraft that I was unfortunate enough to have a past addicition to, so we swapped some war stories. I escaped long ago; they spent most of their time in Japan reading about the game and lamenting over their missed guild event opportunities. I plan to leave Tokyo near the end of May, and travel around Japan before heading to Australia. I don't know for how long, because it's starting to get very hot and humid, and the prospect of lugging around a heavy backpack while sweating profusely is not appealing. I took more pictures of food. Enjoy.... read more

Okay, so the other day, I ran into some problems trying to get some more time booked at the hostel in Tokyo. Apparently it's "golden week" (a sort of Jap equivalent of the Easter holidays), which means everything gets booked up. I found myself without any accomodation, for the night of the third of May and decided to make the most of it by checking out the Asakusa Riverside Capsule Hotel, only twenty minutes walk away. I didn't know quite what to expect with this, but its something a bit different. After the pleasant surprise of discovering it was actually cheaper than what I am paying a night for a bed in a shared dorm at the hostel, I duely handed over my 3000 yen, and exchanged my trainers for some nasty green slippers. The man ... read more

Mosshi Mosshi! Wow what a place. Bright neon lights and 2 aussies beckoned me to visit this circus and its made an impression... Tokyo Culture I believe it now. In Toyko, u really can be: a) a male b) a foreigner c) look like road kill / fat/ be an offense 2 the eye yet still have an amazing Japanese female goddess by your side. I emphasise the word foreign though because if it was a choice between a very handsome japanese man versus an ugly foreigner...well no guesses who wins. The foreigner means chance of a life abroad, money, status and oh, sometimes it might also be a thing called love. It is true the world over, but it happens even in a modern developed and educated country. Local women fighting over westerners, a ... read more

We are now officially the most visited couple who are working at NOVA. Over the past 14 months that we've been living in Japan we've had a grand total of 10 visitors, with more promising to come over here. Our time in Japan is just flying by and of course we'd just love for you all to visit this wonderful, exciting and very interesting country. The last two weeks of April my sister, Susan and her girlfriend Kristy came to visit us. They stayed for around 12 days, which was just terrific! Cameron and I spent the first two weeks of April working 6-day weeks to organise some extra time off for when they were here and it all paid off in the end when we had a nice long week (5 days in a row) ... read more

This next entry is from "Golden Week," a week-long holiday celebrated here in Japan around the first week of May. This period is a conglomeration of separate national holidays. Greenery Day (April 29th), Memorial Day (May 3rd), and Children's Day (May 5th) are the 3 holidays that are honored during this time. We're not really sure why the Japanese celebrate all of them so closely together, but it seems like everyone has the week off from work (well, except for Disney performers and Nova teachers) to relax and enjoy the nice weather - maybe it is comparable to Memorial Day weekend in the U.S.? Either way, these are some of the things we did this week... KAMAKURA: On one of our days off this week, we decided to hop on the train in search of the ... read more

It is so hard to believe that my time in Japan is coming to an end. I am here in Tokyo and have been since late on Friday. I have used the time here to visit some areas I didn't get to last time, sleep in and do some housekeeping in prep for China (re-confirming my flights, my first China accommodation etc). It's been, of course, perfect - even considering the two pretty strong tremors felt yesterday and today:). Japan is an incredible place. Full of contrasts - it is totally unacceptable to cough in public, but it is ok to sit at a table in a restaurant and apply all of your makeup (including false eyelashes). Everyone has been unfailingly polite and kind, but you know it is a high pressure society where there is ... read more
