Decided to revisit Shibuya today as apparently it is busiest at the weekend. "Busy" is not the word !! It was absolutely packed during the week, when I last visited, and today there was a heaving mass of people in every part of town. Shibuya is Tokyo's fashion district and there are certainly some weird and wonderful dress senses going on in Tokyo !! Kids dressed as everything from goths, punks, 1980's b-boys to hippies and just outright bizarre outfits. The most noticeable difference between here and the UK though, is the fact that there doesn't appear to be any animosity between these groups leading completely different lifestyles, and with completely differing ideas of what they obviously think looks cool. I doubt you could find quite such a mixture of people all hanging around in the ... read more

Big day... Great day!! This morning we headed off to Harajuku to check out the freaky girls. We went to Machida, then caught a transfer into Shinjuku (the busiest station in Japan - every workday 3 million people pass through it!). We discovered that I had been an idiot and put a cleaning tape into the Video camera, and had not brought any spares with us, so we had to find an electornics store and buy some replacements. So find them we did, we also found a zoom lens for our new digital SLR camera - usually it retails for around $800 AUS - Kristy bought it for 15000yen (about $165 AUS) - bargain! I sooooo love Japan! So we went to Starbucks, then caught a transfer over to Harajuku. To be honest... we were all ... read more

Seems silly to travel from the Sushi capital of the world (Vancouver) to Tokyo just for sushi! Anyway, met my brother nick in Tokyo and we had a blast! Nick took me on a tour of the clubbing scene and we went ALL night long. I remember looking at my watch as I walked into the last club of the night, it was 7:30am!! When I walked out I wanted my sunglasses because it was t henext day and people were on their way to work! The Japanese clearly understand theconcept of nightlife! ... read more

Went out to Roppongi last night. Roppongi by night is a 'must do' if you ever find yourself in Tokyo. Went with another English from the hostel and basically got really pissed. We bumped into an American who had just arrived and was looking for somewhere to stay the night, so we took him with us. We never found anywhere for him to stay in the end, so he is possibly still staggering round Roppongi, half-cut and homeless !! The last train back to the hostel is around 12, so we had to end the night there. Unfortunate, but it was that or stay out drinking until 5.30 when the Metro resumes service. It's tricky to make it back to the station without being lured into more bars and plied with drinks by the dodgy looking ... read more

“The Land of the Rising Sun” … it really evokes a mystical romanticism, doesn’t it? But as with all clichés, one can’t help but expect that it has been over hyped. So I hovered outside the airplane lavatory with nose pressed to the frosty emergency exit window to make my judgment. (Of course, anyone with a little bit of forethought would have selected a seat viewing east to catch Japan’s namesake in full swing.) I scrutinized the dark bubble-gum pink ball bringing the Pacific Ocean slowly into view. Frothy white foam slept on the deep blue waves below, with a broad band of coral floating and obscuring where the liquid horizon gives way to the clouds above - and all the while I am making these breathtaking observations over the roughly discernible island outlines below, the ... read more

This is the huge fish market in Tokyo - an amazing place; if slightly morbid for the average vegetarian. You have to get here early for the first catch of the day - means getting up at 6 ! Which we had to do two days in a row.. because they had a random holiday on Wedsnesday that they hadn't told anyone about. It was just full of lost looking tourists the first time we turned up ;-) Anyway here are some fish for your amusement...... read more

Hi guys, how's stuff? Good I hope. The culture shock from India to Japan was brilliant - we both really enjoyed it! Sealed roads, no one uses their horn, no beggers, no heat and dust, everything is clean and neat, everyone is wonderfully respectful and doesen't want to know your life history, tell you theirs or think we are strange for trying to establish 3cm of personal space around ourselves. Trains arrive on time - to the minute, and when the girl opened reception at 7:01am yesterday and we both looked at our watches thinking that was great service, she then apologised for over sleeping! To make the shock as acute as possible we spent the first day in Shinjuku, a hugely built up area, enormous department stores, wide traffic lanes, the biggerst TV screens ... read more
