alright chaps, hello from tokyo. well what to tell you first well its not as crazy as i first thought but its good really good. its all hard to put into words well really its not but i have to sit crossed legged to write this and i'm in vast amounts of pain, how do those kids do it? i learned a very valuable lesson today when using one of those cool toilets don't put the water spray bit up to full pressure as its a bit like hundreds of tiny needles being fire up your arse, not as unpleasent as it sounds but maybe thats due to my strict catholic up bringing, long story, well actually a lie i am after all a filthy perv. so tomorrow is d-day a nice 12hr flight which gets ... read more

So I left Pearson in Toronto this morning at around 8:00. And close to 18 hours later I am at the Tokyo international aiport waiting for my connection flight to Bangkok. There really isn't anything exciting to write about yet as all I really have done is sit on a plane. The 12.5 hour flight from Chicago definitely was killer, I think I watched 4 full movies. It's finally setting in that I am actually doing this. When I first took off from Toronto I had this odd panic/excitment, it just kind of hit me that I am actually doing this. So I catch a flight in about 3 hours which lands in Bangkok at around midnight. From there I have to make my way 35 KM south to Backpackers lane and find a place to ... read more

Ho, shit, my arms hurt. Yesterday was the Asakasa DaiMatsuri, and I played a ton of taiko. On top of that, I carried the o-mikoshi way more than I should have. But damn, it was fun!! It pretty much followed standard procedure for a matsuri—only since this one was really special, it was even crazier. It’s estimated that 100,000 people attend this celebration every year. I met my taiko group at 8am, and was drinking by 9:30! I was amazed that after the celebration ended around 6 or so, the group decided to, you guessed it, go out drinking. All right, I realize that I’m probably putting a little too much emphasis on drinking, but it has proven to be a large factor in how much I am learning about Japan. Experiencing Japan this week was ... read more

This past weekend, Eve and new Australian friends Donna and Lauren (who also live in Fukushima) went to Tokyo for Saturday night. Eve and I headed over to the Harajuku area of Western Tokyo for some shopping in the boutiques. In our 20 minutes travelling there on the subway, it had started pouring rain, so by the time we came above ground in Harajuku, there were wet tourists and umbrellas everywhere. We decided to huddle under our umbrellas and press on through the streets. Harajuku is famous for its “Harajuku girls” who dress up in Halloween-type costumes and hang out on the streets and in the near-by Yoyogi Park. Being a Harajuku kid is all about standing out and being different. There are groups that dress up as Rockabilly’s, Goth club kids, and those who just ... read more

Tonight is the reflexion time about my vision of love. No... everything is going fine between me and Tomoko, it's just that sometimes I react strangely to love. I think I often put too much hope and faith into relationship, and those usually fails me. I mean, almost everyones know Mrs.J, even though my chances of making thing with her with really thin, I never puted that much effort into any other relationship. And when I take a relationship lightly, it seems like the girl would spend her life with me. And as stupid as it might seems, the more the girl is distant, the more I wanna be with her, the more the girl is present, the more I am trying to avoid her. Most would say it's because of how I act, but I ... read more

A short one... Today is my last full day in Tokyo and I haven't even seen one tenth of what I wanted to see. There's so much to experience and transportation between the different places is such a time consumer! On todays program we have Tokyo, the actual city...the imperial grounds...and Harajuku, which mean big time and trendy shopping among Japanese youngsters dying to stand out. Until now I've mostly tried to find my way around the western parts of metropolitan Tokyo, around Shinjuku and Shibuya. I guess I'd need a month here to really get a hold of it all... I went music hunting the other day trying to find some good Japanese stuff, but I must say the quality is kind of crappy...at least when I listened around at Tower Records. Ok, big store ... read more

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LARRY! If any of you can remember, just like last year, Larry's birthday celebration this year ALSO lasted for about a week! The whole thing started out on May 19th - the actual day - when I cooked a large birthday dinner for Larry when he got home from work. We had steak, asparagus, shrimp, salad, edamame, fresh tuna, and for dessert, me....haha, just kidding....strawberry cheesecake! It was all delicious...even I was quite surprised at my new cooking abilities!! After dinner, Larry opened his presents from me...a ring (sorta like an engagement ring for men, but unfortunately it was too small for him and we had to take it back) and a really cool Japanese watch! The next birthday celebration we had for Larry was a joint-birthday party with all of our friends. Tenley, ... read more

Very small update this time. I've had a rather unpleasant month, spending 2 weeks with a fever, then one week with tonsillitis, followed by a week nursing an allergic reaction to the tonsillitis medication (apparently my body doesn't like penicillin anymore). I've basically spent the month in bed; reading, taking medicine, and eating yogurt. I think I screwed up that punctuation. Japanese doesn't really have punctuation, which can be nice sometimes. But i guess it has similar things. I'm not really sure what I'm saying, so I'll move on. I ate many litres of yogurt, and am continuing to do so. The Aloe variety is very popular here, and contains small clear chunks of aloe inside, which are quite delicious. After my fever seemed to be gone, and before noticing that I had tonsillitis, I had ... read more

Sorry no photos again. I wasn't planning to come to the internet cafe today. Im supposed to meet tomoko in an hour, so I have some free time to post something here. I will answer a question that was asked in an e-mail by an anonymous person (not really but anyway). I used to compare Gunma and Quebec, and tell about how I felt back then. Remember how I said I was always feeling homesick? People feel homesick when they are sad and lonely I think. In gunma, I had nothing to do really to pass the time. So I started remembering what I used to do in Montreal, and then started missing you guys and our usual "lets get drunk" night =). Now, Im busy a lot, with school work, and also I have a ... read more

My second day in Tokyo... It's a crazy city...or more urban area since you don't really have just one city centre but several. Yesterday I mostly went around Shinjuku, a hip business and entertainment area in western Tokyo. I got lost in the station complex a couple of times which is like a maze with several levels above and below ground as well as shopping centres and terminals for a number of different train lines and companies. It's not easy to find your way out, and when you do you don't exactly end up where you had planned. And all the time people...everywhere... Though I still haven't experienced the real rush hour with people crammed into the train carts like sardines in tin cans. Word has it that when such a train arrives at the platform, ... read more
