Hello Hello, So, on my first day off I decided to go to Harajuku with one of the other Ariels. We did some shopping and I got my hair cut. It was a very exciting day. The next day I went to the Imperial Palace in downtown Tokyo and Shinjuku. The Imperial Palace was beautiful. There is a large moat that surrounds the grounds. Unfortunately, I was not able to actually enter the Palace because the emperor and his family still live there but I could see it in the distance. The area mostly consists of gardens and small temples. There were small ponds and beautiful flowers. I even saw huge Koi swimming around under the lily pads. It was very Japanesey. After I toured the grounds of the Imperial Palace. I got back on the ... read more

Thursday was my last day in Tokyo with Rusty before he headed off to Thailand for two weeks. It was also the day that my Mom and Aunt Heather arrived in Tokyo on a stopover fromt heir trip to Thailand (yeah, everyone is going to Thailand but me). Rusty and I started our day with a visit to Ueno Park. Ueno is famous for cherry blossom viewing during Golden Week and was also the site of a large battle in 1867. It is the city's first public park and is home to the zoo, several museums including the Museum of Western Art, Tokyo National Museum, and a large bond. It also happens to be the area where TOkyo's homeless have chosen to live. you don't find many homeless people on the streets in TOkyo, but in ... read more

---Note: I started the blog entry almost three weeks ago and couldn't get through with it. I'm just going to finish up that first part of the entry, then start anew with a fresh entry about the past week or so. Sorry I'm being such a piece of trash about keeping this updated. Pictures coming soon.--- Ah, the long awaited beginning of the research segment of the program. With the orientation process out of the way it came time to say goodbye and move on to new horizons. Friday Night: Urban Planning and Karaoke After the last round of classes in the morning, we all came back to the hotel and got spiffied up for a presentation on historic preservation in major cities sponsored by the US Embassy. The roundtable discussion featured some really interesting commentary ... read more

July 1st, 2006: Hi all, I know I have fallen behind on my blog entries- I've been busy the past two weeks with a trip to Tokyo with Rusty who was visiting from Quebec for the first half of the week, and a visit from my Mom and Aunt Heather for the second half. And alot of my pictures are also on a disc which I won't have until Tuesday. So, I'll have to do this backwards and post days out of chronological order. So make sure you come back next week and check for new posts about my trips to Tokyo, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Mt. Fuji and Hakone, and Nikko. For now I'll start with Day 4 in Tokyo: The weather in Tokyo was unbearabley hot and humid, but luckily enough, it only rained once during ... read more

Hello all. So this semester I've been teaching English a little bit... it's quite an interesting experience and I never really anticipated doing it before coming here, but I have come to love it! I have several friends who have private students, and with their guidance I found a service online that matches potential students with potential sensei (teachers). Basically native-English speakers post a small profile on a website and then note the locations in which they are willing to teach. The locations are based on the train system, so students living in one part of the city look for teachers living in the same area. These teacher-profiles are then available (for a small registration fee) to Japanese people. It took a few weeks for anyone to respond to my profile, and just when I was ... read more

Today we started bright and early in order to get to the Tsukiji Fish Market. First up breakfast, which was included in our hotel rate. Once we sat down in the restaurant, a bad feeling washed over me- we were getting a traditional Japanese breakfast. Sure enough, out came the miso soup, rice, pickles, tofu, breaded pork, and a variety of other non-breakfast items. At 7am, the last thing I would be able to stomach is pickles and soup, so after eating as much rice as we could so not to insult the waiter, we ran over to the 7-11 across the street and picked up croissants and juice. The Tsukiji Fish Market is the central wholesale market for fish and specializes in giant slabs of tuna ( or “maguro” which is even better raw, sashimi ... read more

Today was the beginning of my week-long stay in Tokyo. We took the 4.5 hour bus from Fukushima to Tokyo early in the morning and made it to downtown Tokyo by 1pm. And, just as we were getting off the bus, it started pouring rain. After exchanging some currency, I expertly navigated the subway system to find our hotel in Asakusa, in Northern Tokyo. Things were going well until we got above ground in the rain and realized that the map the hotel provided was less than accurate. After dragging our luggage and umbrellas up and down the block for about 30 minutes on the vague directions of the hotel and the local convenience store clerk, we finally stopped at a police box- literally a small, closet-sized station that holds one policeman- and he was able ... read more
