As you can tell from the title, this is a bit late coming, but better late than never. Fireworks excursion The Independence Day festivities began with Ryan and I leaving the lab early around 4:30 to buy our cache of explosives for the night's festivities. We originally intended to head to a neighborhood near Asakusa that's well-known for its especially good fireworks, but figuring that there was no way we could make it all the way across Tokyo in time before the shops closed (one learns quickly never to assume shops to be open past 6pm in Japan), so instead we settled for the closer option of the Tokyo Hands in Shinjuku near Shinjuku Times Square. After wasting time with silly costumes and old school video games, we settled down to the task at hand and ... read more

Just a quick entry to give you a taste of Japanese toilets. Of course like every other place in the world they have dirty, not so great ones, but at the same time they also have the best toilets I've seen. Not only are they high tech, but the toilets here also have options. Options? Yup, you can have the seat warmed to a temperature that's comfortable for you, which comes in handy on those cold winter days. Also, there's disinfectant attached to the wall which allows you to spray some on to the toilet paper so you can wipe down the seat. On top of that there are seat covers. There's also an automatic toilet seat raiser. Wait, it gets better. If you don't want anyone to hear your embarassing bowel movements there's a button ... read more

Part 2 of our latest shenanigans! Greetings Sports Fans! Crazy Cam here as your detailed sports caster for all things sporty. Tonights show looks at our visit to the national sport; our intrepid trek to what Tokyo-ite's affectionately call "the big egg"; that's right Indian fan's, we're off the ballpark for some baseball! Okay, enough silly bugger talk. In a (sort of) repeat of my boys night out with Steve and Kevin last year, Meg and I went to the Tokyo Dome - one of the largest sports arenas in Tokyo - to see that wacky national obsession, baseball. Before we indulged in some baseball, we ventured into the theme park next door for some high-speed highjinks on a rather bumpy but fun indoor rollercoaster, and then went for the big boy version that travels across ... read more

I spent a week in Tokyo, first with my friends and then with my mum, who came to take me home. Tokyo has to be one of my favourite places so far, probably because it was here, after 10 days in Japan that I started finally getting to grips with Japanese culture - I love it! As our guide book says, you have to be open minded in Japan and do your best not to come with preconceptions - easier said than done! I realised that as soon as you make one assumption, something will happen to prove you wrong. For instance, we found the Japanese very pro recycling - we spent ages on the streets emptying our lunch bag trying to figure out which of the 3 bins the napkins (combustible) and plastic bottles (non-combustible) ... read more

Hi everyone, As some of you already know, I recently celebrated my 25th birthday here in Tokyo. After a couple dinners and parties with my friends and fiance, I realized that getting older isn't always such a bad thing! The first couple of pictures are from July 9th, my actual birthday, when Larry took me to the beautiful Tokyo Emion Bay Hotel for a delicious, Italian dinner at a restaurant called LaLa. LaLa, as you can see by the picures, was a gorgeous place....only lit up by candlelight. I even got a special dessert here with the message "Happy Birthday Melanie" written on the plate in chocolate syrup! The next group of pictures are actually from a few days before my actual birthday, when we went to celebrate at Monsoon (one of my favorite restaurants here) ... read more

Having such little evidence to go by, I suspected that my mission to find the Golden Carrot may prove impossible! Considering the sheer number of temples in Japan alone I thought 3 weeks could not possibly be enough time. As we left Chiran, then Miyazaki and then my friends left to go to Kyoto and then home, time was running out, and fast. My family were expecting me home in less than 7 days, but could I return empty-handed? And then, out of the blue, I opened my weary eyes towards the end of a short cruise up the river to find it right there in all its glory - the G.C.!! Right by Sensoji temple, in the heart of Asakusa. It's fitting that its near the temple that houses a small statue of the Buddhist ... read more

Harajuku a.k.a. Tokyo's fashion district is a great place to discover Tokyo's sense of fashion. Anything goes here and I mean ANYTHING. Sunday is the best day to discover all senses of fashion, from jaw dropping styles to "oh my gosh, I can't believe they're wearing that" styles. It's common for teens to dress up in their Sunday best (literally) and come to Harajuku to show it off. They don't mind having photos taken, as tourists enjoy discovering Tokyo fashion. For those who are familiar with Singer, Gwen Stefani (from No Doubt), her 4 female Japanese dancers are Harajuku girls. Harajuku girls/boys dress in a certain style common and known to the Harajuku area. Harajuku is also a great shopping district. My favourite shopping area in Harajuku is Takeshita-dori (dori is Japanese for street). Enjoy the ... read more

Hey everyone! I'm so sorry that I've just got round to updating my blog! You all probably know I've been back a couple of weeks but I had a lot to sort out and I've started back at work....not valid excuses I know! Anyway, I spent my last few days in Japan in Tokyo. As much as I wanted to climb Mount Fuji, everything was going against me doing it (lack of money, time, it was raining constantly, I coudn't even get a japanese girl to find out how to get there, the huts were closed and I only met one guy who would do it with me and our dates didn't match up) so I had to let the idea go....but my brother is coming to Japan for a year so who knows, I might ... read more

Tokyo...impossible to describe in one word! Exciting, bustling, bright, loud, serene, traditional...12.2 million people! It is described as city that everyone must see once in their lifetime. I agree! Those of you who know me well, generally know that I'm not a big fan of large cities. I find them intimidating and overwhelming, an assault on your senses and peace of mind. However, I had a fair idea of what I was in for before I visited Tokyo. When I first arrived in Japan last August, I spent three days in one of the busiest areas of Tokyo, Shinjuku, in a fancy hotel, attending seminars for my new job of teaching English as a Foreign Language to high school students. Really, the only glimpses of the city I saw were when I went out for dinner ... read more

On Danny's 4th day here, which also happened to be July 4th - although not really a big deal here in Japan, we went to Asakusa. Asakusa is known for its famous Kaminarimon Gate, as well as it's beautiful temple and 5-storey pagoda. Unfortunately though, when we visited the temple and got our fortunes this time, Danny and I had bad fortunes, but Larry had "best fortune" twice in a row!! NOT FAIR! After visiting Asakusa's history, we decided to search for another conveyor-belt sushi restaurant, because Danny could just not get enough of it! Well, after a few phone calls to the Japanese girls that Larry works with and many attempts at asking the locals on the streets, we finally found a place. A good place too....In fact, one of the plates that Larry tried ... read more
