Tom had planned for us to go to Brighton for the weekend, and I was excited to go somewhere outside of London for the first time since getting here. We left on Friday evening and headed down there and it's only about an hour away. The hotel was in the marina and very nice. We had some amazing seafood and tried to carry on but it was pouring and we couldn't find anywhere that was open. That's England in the winter for you I guess. The next day we went to a place I had looked up on the internet and desperately wanted to go to (because I'm a dork like that). It's the Royal Pavilion, a sort of castle which looks like it belongs in India, not in Brighton England. It was the summer home ... read more

I don't even know where to begin, typing this on 7 March. I cannot believe it is March and I have been here for over two months now; the time is flying by. I had a warm welcome when I first got here back in January. I stayed with Annette, my Australian friend Alf's cousin, in a suburb SW of London. She was absolutely fantastic and helped me out so much despite the fact that I was a complete stranger. She is a lovely person and we had a great time chatting the few days I was there. Luckily, the house hunt was not as stressful as it had been in Sydney. After viewing a few places over just two days, I found a nice big house in Shepherd's Bush, west of the city but at ... read more

Getting to Oxford took quite a long time, as the train must have made about 15 stops. I got to see quite a bit of the middle of England though! Once there I went exploring as best I could, since everything had closed and it was dark and cold. That night I met some interesting people in the hostel, including a guy from Zimbabwe, who told me of the country's condition and how his friends, family, everyone has left. He was going around Europe trying to decide basically where he wants to live and try to make a new life. Also met Larry, a very nice British guy, who was originally from Oxford and as such on the second day took me on a tour of the city. I of course spent a lot of time ... read more

I got to York with no problems, though had sort of regretted my decision to begin conversation with an older English guy on the train, who kept drinking beer and got a bit obnoxious. I was not prepared for how small York is. I walked literally 2 minutes from the train station, outside the walls, to the hostel, inside the walls. Again, it was pretty dead as people were heading north. That first day I probably saw nearly all of the city. I went to its most famous landmark, the Minster (Cathedral), which is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe and is the seat of the Archibishop of York as well as the cathedral for the Diocese of York. In addition, Constantine was crowned emperor here in AD 306, so it has a plethora of ... read more

So after four months of what was about the worst/most difficult semester of my life, I was MORE than ready to take off. I went on a cruise in the Caribbean with the fam, which was fun and relaxing, and then was home for Christmas, thank goodness. It was really important for me to be home because last year, despite being in Oz, I was miserable and lonely! Delta started direct service from Atlanta to Edinburgh so I took advantage of that and flew out on 27 December. I tried to brace myself for how cold it would be but...I was not prepared. I also had been to busy that I had not had much time to plan this bit of travel; the only definite was that I had to be in London for my course ... read more

After about four movies on an uneventful flight from Bangkok I was back in Sydney, though it was quite a bit colder than when I had left back in January! I was sooooooooooo happy to be back. I started work three days after arriving and settled in straight away. It was a bit of an adjustment working full time, but I absolutely loved my colleagues and went from knowing just the basics about immigration law to learning a great deal. The view in the office was amazing, as the picture to the right shows. It took my breath away on the first day! It was fun being one of only two Americans in the office and at times people from the other divisions who were dealing with Americans immigrating abroad would ask me questions about the ... read more

So I had planned to go on a 2 day trip to what, in my bit of research, sounded like the nicest chilled out beach closest to Bangkok, Ko Samet (I had from the get go decided I couldn't be bothered to spend all my time trying to get down to Ko Samui et al to be surrounded by a bunch of partying Aussies and Brits). Cameron and his Chilean friend who had arrived, Max, wanted to get to a beach too because they were leaving for Vietnam soon so decided to come along. We left on Monday morning on the bus and let's just say it was another one of those trips where you feel like you could walk it faster! It took nearly half the day to get to the pier in Ban Phe. ... read more

As enjoyable as the first few days in Bangkok had been, I needed to get away for a day. Having always been interested in WWII history/relics, I decided to take a day trip to Kanchanaburi, about 2 hours west of Bangkok. This the area where Hellfire Pass and the Bridge over the River Kwai are located. Whilst in Japan I had tried to organize a several day bike trip from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and back, thinking that would be an interesting way to see the countryside. Apparently though I was the only crazy person who thought riding bikes in the heat and humidity of Thailand was a good idea, as the trip I had wanted to do could not go because I was the only person signed up! So the next best thing was a day ... read more

The flight to Bangkok took considerably longer than I thought. On the way, I was entertained first with trying to figure out who the guys around me were. It was a large group of predominantly Americans and Brits, from mid-30's to probably about 60 in age. Some of them looked clean cut whilst others, including the guy next to me, looked a bit more...punk rock. Turns out it was Toto (remember the songs Rosanna and Africa from the 80's?) and their roadies. The Brit roadie next to me seemed surprised that I was unaware that yes, they are still together, and yes, they are still touring. Um, did anyone know that? Who actually goes to see them perform around the world these days? Lots of amusing roadie/music/travel stories later, I declined the invitation to hang out ... read more

We came back to Tokyo on Saturday night and there wasn't much time left as were both leaving on Tuesday. We went out to dinner at an Italian place (I think Mom had had about as much Japanese food as she could handle on our two short trips) then I took her to Shibuya, the 'Lost in Translation' area of the city. We wandered around there a bit; it's really fun just to walk around and people watch. Sunday we accompanied Yuko and the kids to her friend's house, whom I had met before and we had a lovely tea. I then took Mom to Ueno to bit of museum browsing, but it was pouring down rain afterwards so we didn't end up doing much else. Monday Seiko took Mom and I to the Tsukiji Fish ... read more
