We flew to Indonesia with lots of preconceptions of what the country would be like. These were based on government warnings about travel to Indonesia on the FCO website, which had us fearing that all Indonesians would be terrorists intent on kidnapping us or blowing us up, and western media portrayal of what 'muslim countries' are like. It turned out to be completely different to what we expected. The first suprise on landing was that, far from being a bunch of western-hating extremists, Indonesians are friendly, welcoming people. A guard took us straight past the immigration queue at the aiport and people would smile, shout hello, point us in the right direction and be generally helpful. On the train one lady even brought her children over to say hello and shake our hands. The second ... read more

I spent a relaxing 2 1/2 days on the Island of Bali, Indonisia. I think this could be the most beautiful place I've been to. I wasn't completely off the grid because I did want to see the important sites so I hired a driver and needed to know what time it was in order to meet him each day. Visited a couple temples on the west coast and a temple site in central Bali on a lake that was a former volcano. Got to see one beautiful sunrise. I got up at 5:00 AM the other morning and got dressed, camera ready headed out and realized it was raining once I got to the street and headed back to bed. I stayed on the East Side at a relatively quite (less visited) area called Sanur. ... read more

We left Lovina the next day on another night bus, because the dolphins were seemingly the main attraction and their was very little else to do. The journey to probbolingo went smoothly and we arrived there at 3am!! their was only one place open to arrange our further transport to mount bromo and he did slightly rip us off but it equated to about 75p so we wern't to fussed.our transport was a small minivan with around 30 people either in it or on it for the 2 hour trip to bromo (luckily we were in the front where there was just 4 of us). At about 6am we arrived in cemero lawang (the gateway to bromo) and hunted out some accommodation before having breakfast and then going to bed. We both felt pretty rough from ... read more

I spent 2 days in busy, cosmopolitan Jakarta, on the Island of Java, Indonisia. Tough crossing the street and not too much to see, but the people were very friendly and were happy to have me take there pictures. Then I took the 10 hour (which took 12 hours) train to Yojakarta in central Java. Saw shadow puppet show (rather boring as not much action) and traditional dance at the Sultans palace. Came here primarily to see borobuda and Pramanan temples. Stopped by Mount Bromo (an active volcano) to see the sunrise and climb up and around the rim on my way to Bali. It took 14 hours by mini bus from Yojakarta to Bromo and another 15 hours by regular bus from Bromo to Bali. Not so comfortable, but this is a price you have ... read more

Ok guys so i'm in Bali....it's a little scary here when you're on your own, as the locals are very adament that you buy something from them....so much that they start walking with you and touching your arm to try and get you into their shop!! It's OK though as there are plenty of people around and so I don't think much could happen to me - touch wood!!hehe I've not done too much since i've been here...relaxed and did a bit of shopping and walking along the beach on my first day....where by the way I am famous!! Oh yes...two groups of kinds came up and asked to have their photo taken with me!! I guess it's because of my amazing white skin, just makes me irresistible :P They can't understand why people want to ... read more

015 - Indonesia - Bali 04/12/08 - 04/16/08 Hunting for manta rays and artwork in Bali First, I'd like to thank all of you for following our adventure. I (Hannah) decided to help with the blog, so the following story is mine. But before we begin I want to give some personal updates: Nico and I are traveling marvelously together and our relationship continues to blossom. Up until now we have been in good health, with some minor stomach irritations from Thai spices. I have managed to lose a few things - sadly not weight, but nothing critical (knock on wood). We have gained many new friends and our lives are enriched every day as we learn about each culture and get to know the locals living there. We are incredibly thankful for all the messages ... read more

A long and uncomfortable night bus journey north left us in the gorgeous little town of Banaue, high in the North Luzon mountains. The town itself is situated on the bend of a river, on a hill overlooking a beautiful valley, surrounded by other tiny rural villages. Many of the hotels and restaurants, ours included, are built on stilts on the very edge of the cliff and have amazing views of the entire region. The area is famous for the rice terraces that were origionally built nearly 2000yrs ago by the Ifugao people, a tribe of subsistance farmers that dominated the province at that time and continue to do so today. The terraces are cut into the mountains and built from base to summit like a giant staircase and house many tiny villages of tribes people, ... read more

Medewi is a small village situated on the west coast of Bali. It is not on the normal tourist trail as there are probably much better resorts elsewhere on the island. Medewi is well known among the surfing community, so we had to go and check it out. It was a long and interesting drive through beautiful countryside and busy towns, really giving us a feel for what Bali is really like when you take the tourists away. We arrived in Medewi in the early afternoon and the sun was shining. The options for places to stay were quite limited. There was a resort hotel right on the beach and a small mid range guesthouse further up the road. We had been told by a guy we met at Linda’s that there was another homestay right ... read more

It's been one of those days. You know, the ones where you accidentally find yourself invited to a Balinese royal funeral ceremony. Someone in Tulamben said I should go to Ubud and see some Balinese dancing, which would be interesting even if it is pretty much just laid on for tourists. Instead I stopped off for what was meant to be a quick bite to eat and a mooch round the royal palace in Amlapura en route to modern communication facilities in Kuta. It turned out they were preparing for a funeral, and being friendly types they suggested I stay the night in a hotel so I could watch the procession in the street the next day. On my way to find the hotel I stumbled across more preparations in the form of a team in ... read more

If you like Cancun Mexico you might like it here.... I for one do not like beach towns with booming bars and every merchant you pass grabbing you and trying anything they can to sell you something! Maybe 10-20 years ago this place would be fun but now...not so much. We have hooked up with a British/female run dive shop near by in Seminyak (AquaMarine Diving) and will be spending on night here in Seminyak before going diving tomorrow then moving east about 85K to Candi Dasa (laid back place with white sand beaches) we have arranged to make 8 dives over the next 7 days (2 a day with a day off in between) in more of the best dive sites in the world. We will be visiting a couple of wrecks including the USS ... read more
