So im alive, that nice family let me leave with one of my kidneys. How sweet! Seriously tho, they let me sleep in a bed for a few hours, fed me breakfast lunch and diner, drove me and helped me book my ticket to bukittinggi, and the brother even waiting for 2 hours with me at the bus station. I offered money but they refused. Made me think, if i was in that situation, i would totally help out other travelers like that. I dont think the situation will arise much, especially if i stay in Calgayry. who wants to travel there anyways? "and here is a big restaurant that rotatets, heres a crane, and another crane, and a bunch of business men, and oh, an oil company skyscraper! If you get bored of that, we ... read more

Payakumbuhissa saimme tietysti taas aidin tekemaa rendangia. Pukeuduimme kaikki tietysti myos lansisumatralaisiin perinneasuihin. Sukulaisia riitti paivasta toiseen ja iso osa olikin jo entuudestaan tuttuja. Lotta ja Kasperi viettivat koulupaivan Ikan apuopettajina englantia puhuen... Kouluviikko alkoi tietysti maanantaiaamun lippuseremonialla. Kesken koulupaivan oppilaat juoksivat kaksikerroksisen ja n. 500-oppilaisen SD Pius -alakoulun luokista pihalla, koska Sumatran lansirannikolla jalleen sattunut maanjaristys heilutti rakennusta. Samaan aikaan Epin parturi-kampaamossa ei paljoakaan tuntunut, mutta kattolamppu heilui siellakin.... read more

Bukittinggissa ihailimme kanjonimaisemia Taman Panoramassa ja kavimme myos japanilaisten kaivamissa toisen maailmansodan aikaisissa tunneleissa. Apinoita oli tietysti paikalla myos! On to Palau Weh otherwise known as Sabang What a stunning island fantastic but even now with most of the NGO staff gone from Banda there is an accommodation problem especially at weekends. We arrived at the ferry port and locals sort the transport out part of the way in a bus then they unloaded us into a Taxi. Nice driver who is the main driver for Iboih beach. We wanted to stay at Gapang so he took us round looking for a place Ellie wasn’t feeling to good so looked for AC it was late, we ended up at one of the Government places Laguna Resort big bungalows 250000Rp a night absolutely crap. Toilet stank like a gent’s urinal that had never been cleaned. The rooms are huge soulless and depressing ours had more ants ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Banda Aceh February 1st 2008

Arrived in Banda all very organised with the Taxis set price 90,000Rp fixed from the airport all set up for all the NGO people the number of which are now dwindling. Banda seems OK. First impressions of the Tsunami aftermaths personally I can’t just go to such a place and pretend nothing has happened. We talked to many people about the tragedy people who experienced it, people who were there already and the first outsiders in, people from NGOs who had been working there and how it all went afterwards. The Military were some of the best with the right equipment and organisation to sort things the quickest. I was working in Thailand at the time and travelling offshore through Utapao airport. This is the old B52 bomber base they used as one of the places ... read more

Iwan the our guide from the Jungle Inn had been suggesting we take a trip to Tangakahan About 2.5 hours from Bukit Lawang (it took about 3.5 in the end) we can go for a day trip allegedly. Well that’s possible but who would want to. Not wanting to spend so long travelling in one day we decide on an overnight. This is where we screw up having got friendly with Iwan and liking his good knowledge and attitude to the wildlife. So we don’t check it out anywhere else. This would have been easy to do. Iwan said we had to come back to Bukit Lawang to get back to Medan we already had a flight to Banda Ache booked. Left one of our Bags at Iwans house and meet up with the chain smoking ... read more

We left Bukkittinggi early morning on a bus down to Bandarlampung, which we was expecting to take 24 hours. The first few hours went relatively quickly, but as the day went on the journey started to drag. We was the only two white people on the bus which was overcrowded with locals sitting on plastic crates along the middle aisle of the bus. The illegal logging was evident along the whole journey and it made the landscape look really barren at times. Slept quite well during the night travel but woke up at around 5am to find that we'd broken down at a garage, as one of the wheel bearings had gone. After 3 hours waiting for a new bearing to be delivered we eventually got back on the road. We were quite optimistic that we ... read more

- "Een colaatje?" - "4000 graag."

Arrived at Bukit Lawang what a lovely place with the rustic bridges across the river and the little backpacker style restaurants and guest houses. You have to walk all the way up to the top of the village for the Jungle in which is by the boat crossing near the ranger station at the top. Jungle inn is stunning, we went for the big room one floor down from the top, as we took it for 5 nights it was a good price. The famed waterfall right out of the bathroom window and you can go out of the back door of the bathroom and take a bath in the small pools in the stream. The room is special and reflects the care and attention that has gone into the Jungle Inn giant furniture and loads ... read more
